I've never built anything as awesome as the MMX, but, I've built a lot of things. What I've learned is that this is the way most large, complex, passion projects go. Passion at the start, followed by slowly declining motivation to a low point Crux. You fight through the darkness and come out the other side with focus, motivation, and renewed passion. It ends with an amazing result. Seems like 2020 finds you in the last stage. 🙂

I think someone else did already mention it but I will do it too: Fix that electric work of you house. This is a potential fire hazard. Also: Emergency shutoff for the motor is highly recommended (turnoff mains) for safety and fire hazard prevention. Otherwise electronics wise: Neat work! Now it just needs a pretty input/output to set the tempo by hand! I can't stress this enough: Fix the electric work of your house please. This is a fire hazard.
@jackmarshall2496

Speed Torque and current is monitored by the motor controller if it is programmed correctly it should automatically cut out if something goes wrong. If that fails a resetable fuse would be a better option. The problem with an emergency stop button is that you are required to press it and if it is out of reach at the time of failure its pretty much pointless.

@Daybreakerflint
@Daybreakerflint 4 жыл бұрын
@@jackmarshall2496 I am overcautious when it comes to this. It is, a electromechanical machine which could lead to serious injuries. This is why I suggest a big red button 'if' something goes wrong. No electronics is failsafe and a resettable fuse might not be a good choice in this application. It is a mere safety concern which can be implemented easily. Just a normal big red button in the mains of the motor dc supply.
@jackmarshall2496
@jackmarshall2496 4 жыл бұрын
@@Daybreakerflint say the mmx is running without crank input in its hands free operation you could literally walk away from it and it would still run, in that scenario a button would do no good. And it's a large machine, if your arm gets stuck in it when you're out of reach of the button you cant press it. I understand what you are saying about not trusting the programming or a large resettable fuse (which would also protect the other circuitry) but in the same way you could also not trust a button to cut out the circuit. I've done this kind of programming and circuit design myself with many different controllers (trinamic foc motor drivers/controllers being my preference) and in my experience they are a lot faster at cutting in the event of fault than human input.
@hjalfi
@hjalfi 4 жыл бұрын
Re the emergency shutoff: YES! You want a big red emergency stop button on the front of the machine. There's a lot of mass there, and once it starts moving there's a lot of potential for mashing fingers, getting loose clothing or hair caught, etc. You absolutely need some kind of emergency cutoff.

Moving that machine around from venue to venue is going to be absurdly stressful! A top heavy, delicate, precision machine. One drop could lead to hours and hours and hours of re-calibrating and re-timing the machine. That is not even factoring in if any parts bend of break. Making a well designed, "untipable", traveling case will be of the utmost important. It is something I could see Adam Savage being amazing at! He has an addiction and fascination with boxes/cases. I'm seeing a lot of comments suggesting an emergency stop button. The problem with an emergency stop button is that you are required to press it and if it is out of reach at the time of failure its pretty much pointless. Speed Torque and current is monitored by the motor controller if it is programmed correctly it should automatically lock the motor as quickly as possible if something goes wrong. If that fails a resettable fuse on the input to the motor gate driver would be a suitable backup.

I would recommend automating the data mining of those time differences. It looks like you're spending a lot of time manually measuring them in the interface, which looks tedious, especially since you've only just begun the calibration process. This can be trivially automated, probably with a simple trigger and a holdoff algorithm. If the recording or editing software you use doesn't have such features, I'm sure I could whip something up in Python if you send me a couple of sample audio tracks. It sure would be nice to have the computer directly spit out the correction averages during (or shortly after) recording.

i personnaly would be super interested by having the time change of a correction. i would really like to know if the number of steal shims change the timing consistently (1 shim = -2 seconds of the general timing) or (the timing change of a turn of a crank ) , etc i would love to get some data to code a "minimal move for a correct time adjustement program" if it is not consistent, it is just more fun ;)

So glad to see you getting some proper maker's joy. You deserve it every step of the way - the MMX has always been a masterpiece, but it's such a long, complex, difficult project that the little victories along the way have been drowned out perhaps by the daunting knowledge of how much was left to do and the worry about whether it would all turn out ok.

"'I think I'm making a masterpiece."" What, did you ever have a doubt in your mind. Ask anyone, we've known this all along, that is why were here ... well, and because you are such an interesting person in general. Did I mention musical genius? Oh, have you ever thought of using a adjustable automotive timing light (triggered through a magical device someone designs using a midi cable or ???) to actually see the components in time? I'm imagining the strobe light on my old direct drive turntable with all the dots on the platter. Wait, it's a masterpiece ... nevermind.
