The most important thing this lessons teaches is this...play using your ears, listen to the other musicians, and let that dictate your playing. Pay more attention to what you hear the other guy is playing and stop watching your hands. More of this type of "band" playing lessons. These are so helpful and thanks to you for doing it.

The definition of professional just means that it's your profession, that you do it for a living. Otherwise it is amateur or semi pro. It doesn't imply how successful you are.

The rest of the band can be all over the place. As long as the drummer and bassist are locked in, it will sound good. On the other hand, the rest of the band can be perfect but if the bassist and drummer aren't locked in, it's gonna sound terrible. Basically, the key to a good band is a good rhythm section.

Wow! Just to hear them discuss their insights on how to communicate with each other and follow each others groove makes so much sense. Also great to see and hear so many parts of previous lessons pulled together in a single lesson. Rudiments, fills, hi-hat work, etc. I will be watching and listening to this lesson many more times. Thank You!

I appreciate both you guys taking the time to share this wisdom with the rest of us. Performers get so wrapped up in technique and flash they forget the simplicity of making the audience FEEL what's going on. I've seen "simple" bands pack a venue night after night because the audience can quickly lock in to their groove and they love it (even if they don't know why).

Loved every moment of this video. As a bass player, the drummer is a bassist's closest partner to carry on the band, decide the feel, rhythm and tempo, the dynamics and all of that in the song. both are so locked in with each other... appreciate each one of you for doing this. thank you. This is an invaluable lesson in itself. Blessings.

Played guitar for many years- nothing professional - small garage bands, few beers, slightly out of tune...ya know. I've been making electronic music more recently and quickly came to realize that I didn't actually understand drums and bass. With bass you can cheat a little, but your songs begin to sound like they've been Xerox'ed - one dimensional. Without really understanding drums, I'd lay down a decent idea but I'd figure out the bass lines first against my guitar. So you take a Xerox'ed sounding bass line joined up with the drum ideas created in isolation and it's a lot like throwing dice; every once in a while you get lucky. This lesson was enlightening to say the least. I can't begin to tell you how many a ha moments I had watching this. It's a privilege to get instruction from these gentlemen. Thank you for posting....I'm just 6 years behind. :)

These are the moments that matter. When you are playing a room with 14 people in it, and you might not have enough gas to get home, but the Drummer and Bass player are one. Part of the same hivemind. A Unit. Look at 12:17 where the kick drum and bass player are instantly on the same page. I am fortunate that my band that you never heard of and will never be 'big' has a bass and drum like this. They were each, each others best man in their weddings. Have worked the same jobs, and have known each other 18 years. It makes it magical for me as a guitarist. Once we are locked in, it's like a musical ouija board. Playing with 2 guys like the above video is a treasure. Especially when you know all your friends are busy 'watching the game', not creating anything, or adding anything to the universe.

It's good to see a lesson showing people how important it is to play in a group as a rythm section, not just concentrating on your own instrument without showing how its meant to be used in a band. You need to listen as much as you need to be a human metronome.

I think this stuff is gold! No double kick gospel chops, just real groove playing by masterful musicians. (On a technical note, I think everyone needs lavaliers so the voices don't drop off when they are demoing and talking at the same time.)

Finally got to see it, thanks tech guys. Yes, it’s all about being musical to serve the moment (song) and the overall, grabs the audience--remember, the audience :-) (-be the audience) I was jamming with my Bass, while watching this. They made it easy. The Bass player has some nice box licks, and minor scale runs that were easy to “by ear” since with the beat and playing the 1, 3, 5 up and down the next, etc.

Ok, I'm a beginning/intermediate drummer, but a LONG time bass player who started out in the 80s as well so I'm seeing this from both sides. Of couse all that has been talked about here is tops in drum/bass connection (and priceless at that). It does seem as though there are so many more drummer/bass players that don't 'pay attention' to groovin' together do to the 'I'm playing my groove...follow me!" (guilty myself). Untill one 'humbles' themself to the other the 'oneness' won't happen. Thanks

It will improve your communication everywhere in you relationship...haha.... I am not a relationship counselor, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night...jk....Gud luck!!!
