@@tomh.5750 That's not very strange at all. Incomplete knowledge of a person leads to incomplete conclusions. That's all racism boils down to when you get past it all. Bonding with animals isn't that abnormal either. Other animals in nature often bond with other species. Especially mammals. It's just an instinct. They may see us as cute, the same way we see them as cute, and do what they can to protect us/whatever animal they're with.

If you have a chance go see the octopus and let it touch your hand with its tentacles. I'm an old man and about 45 years ago I went to an aquarium along the coast of Oregon that had a large octopus that you could interact with. I put my hand in its tank, which was open on top, and the octopus wrapped its tentacle around my hand very gently. Many years ago but I'll never forget it.

Lee Bordenet. Mr. Bordenet, thank you for your comment! I really enjoyed your comment because it reminds us of things that truly are magical and amazing on this old earth! One of the times I was fortunate enough to visit Oahu, I made a bee line 🐝 to this aquarium that allowed visitors to swim with dolphins. For me, that was my, 'I'll never forget this moment'.... It's interesting that both of us relate to nature more than materialistic items! I live in the Pacific NW, where they have giant octopuses at the aquarium. I haven't been in ages, as I'm old too! But as a tribute to you, I'm going to make the effort and go, as your comment intrigued me! Take care friend!

Technically they aren't "alive" and aren't in pain or anything (well at least according to our current scientific understanding), It's just that because of they way their brain and nervous system works that they just continue to wiggle around for a while after being cut up. I personally wouldn't ever eat it and think it's kind of gross eating something that's still wigglying and slithering as you're swallowing it. I don't understand why people think it adds anything to the eating experience, and honestly IMO the majority people who eat them like that do so just because of the shock value.

Gilligan is *so* delightful. It's incredible for such a solitary creature with no ability for vocalization, octopods are still perfectly capable of communication and bonding. How wild is that?

Brings back a great memory on the beach as a kid, found a small octopus trapped in a very shallow tidepool and it didn't look very healthy was balled up and not moving, unfortunately this was before I had a smartphone so I couldn't look it up or take a photo but I took a small flat rock and gently scooped it up (wasn't sure if it was toxic/poisonous I was a kid after all) and carried it a few feet back to the ocean and it immediately stretched out and looked so much bigger and colorful than it did at first and then a few moments later it was gone but even that short time with it was so great and memorable. Seems like a fun job although Gilligan is a bit big and intimidating! Lol thanks for the video and thanks to everyone involved in caring for these incredible animals

all life is sentient, even botanical life. there are different levels of consciousness not all life forms are complex.
@HolyApplebutter
@HolyApplebutter 4 жыл бұрын
The word you're looking for is sapient, as sentient basically just means that a creature is capable of percieving and responding to outside stimuli. There also are actual forms of non-sentient life, such a sponges, bacteria, and plants. To be specific, creatures that lack a nervous system, and as a result aren't capable of consciousness, are arguably closer to biological machines than a sentient creature.
@ozodari6160

@@HolyApplebutter plants and bacteria dont respond to outside stimuli? and sea sponges move around the sea floor in search of food...not much of a biologist there, i guess your just "sapient"
@HolyApplebutter
@HolyApplebutter 4 жыл бұрын
@@ozodari6160 First off, we're both sapient. Sentience is the ability to percieve and respond, sapience is the ability to think and reason. Second, that is not what sponges do. They're filter-feeders, and remain anchored to one point on the sea floor. You might be thinking about sea cucumbers. As for plants and bacteria, they might respond to certain stimuli, but they have no way of percieving it aside from some extremely basic "senses." I believe in those cases it's more of an automatic response, a venus fly trap works more like a bear trap than it does an animal biting something. I'll admit I'm not hugely knowledgeable on this particular bit, but what I do know is that just about every claim about plants having intelligence or being able to feel this or that is extremely shaky at best. Feel free to correct me though.
@ozodari6160
@ozodari6160 4 жыл бұрын
@@HolyApplebutter even if a plants consciousness is so simple that is seems like an automatic response to you, the bottom line is that plants do perceive and respond to a number of things. the majority of actions a human takes would also be deemed automatic or simple. when you drive to the store to get food, go shopping and come back put it in the oven and sit on the couch and watch tv, does that seem like higher consciousness to you? or what about when people spend 5-6 hours on a cell phone scrolling up with one finger and hitting the like button when their dick gets hard. no, but thats about as ingenuitive and complex as most americans get. also i checked the definition for sapient and i know what sentient means. perhaps you should aswell. i cannot talk with you about something you dont know the meaning of.

The video, "The Insane Biology of: The Octopus" changed my perspective instantly and now being able to "pet," play, handle, or be in close graces of this animal are on my life's bucketlist for sure.

A dorable I think they live 1-2 years for some species and up to 5 years for others, which isn't long. They usually lay eggs and then don't eat anymore while the female guards her eggs, and then she dies about the time they hatch from hunger or malnutrition I guess. The males die after they fertilize some eggs, but I'm not sure what happens if they don't find a mate cause they all seem to die very young. Can you imagine how much they would learn and how intelligent they would be if they could pass info from one generation to the next or live a long time? It boggles the mind. Perhaps we would no longer be at the top of the food chain lol.

Severn Belle You can tell how very intelligent Gilligan is and how inquisitive. It's obvious that this aquarium works hard to give her a good environment, but it tough to see such an intelligent creature in a relatively small tank. It's certainly necessary sometimes and the only way we can learn about them, but tough still. Have a great day everybody! By the way, I am happily watching the replay 🐙 😍😍

I found a red octopus the other day on the beach i thought it was dead but it pretty soon showed me it was alive and awaiting the incoming tide. It was the most satisfying thing ever to pet. I called him Octavian! Though in retrospect I did not and still do not know its gender.. However it was a very bright red / orange with white spots and the under side of its head was white. I was so sad the tide was coming in and i had to leave him :'( wish i had seen this before i had met him then i would have not been as shy to touch his tenticals though i did stoke his head a lot very intelligent and cute ^_^

They sure do intrigue me too. I think that they have different personalities, as all animals do, & are very intelligent. They can probably feel our emotional state. Some have been known to attack divers & pull off their swim fins, shoes, tanks & breathing aparatus, so aren't all gentle. They may just have been curious or thinking they were helping the divers, thinking the hoses & bubbles signified something attacking the humans, so trying to remove the stuff they saw as foreign to the divers, as an unknown creature attacking the diver. So if diving, don't assume they're just friendly & fascinating, though. While likely true, they could still pose some danger.
@Nyarlathotep63

@@cherylanderson3340 Thanks for your reply, Cheryl. Yes, I imagine an intelligent creature is also likely to remember any 'not so friendly' humans they have encountered and behave accordingly. I searched other octopus stories after watching this one and was touched by their willingness to interact. One was grateful for being saved from dehydration on a beach, while another even enlisted the help of a friendly lady diver to help move an underwater obstacle so it (he/she) could search for food underneath. They are fascinating neighbors and I wish we treated them and all animals better. I really wish that! I am sure that these videos help to make that happen.

She started angry and feel in danger and even did facial and eye emotions like fruncing eyes at the start but five aproximely minutes after the start of the vídeo went very friendly and peaceful. I liked how in aproximely 2.5 Minutes she intentionally tried to take a walk out of the Aquarium and get frenzied because you don't let her go out of it and how intelligently she expresser surrender with his arms throwing at the back of her. Octopus are incredibly smart and I don't think a ''Smarter terrestrial pet'' Will do the same with that perfection. Scientifics needs to know octopus are inteligent as a middle terrestrial animal, like lions, horses or zebras. I read on internet a guy has an octopus who asked for cleaning his aquarium after reading - The same or more than a middle-smart terrestrial (Or aquatic, I hope people will understand that even aquatic animals are more smarter than terrestrial, ironicly) animal. How smart aquatic beasts are, I don't believe how programmed it will be an octopus brain for an aquatical animal without bones and with poison on it. Such a mess.

I had sucker marks on my face for a couple of days. Had to explain the marks to my division officer, he thought I was coming down with some Cuban sickness. I`ll never forget it, hilarious.
