Using in-ear monitors on stage? It's very common these days, and yet I'm amazed at the number of people who don't know how to use them or mix with them. Be sure to download the Ableton file for this lesson if you'd like to use my settings and follow along - just go to thebassi.st/2mO...

Great video. I have found that if I start with vocals that is the best way for me to do it. For loosing communication with the band, set up a talkback mic. Set up a room mix too.

I'm not a fan of the room mics; I always turn them off cuz it muddies up my mix (unless they're eq'ed and compressed well, which usually they aren't haha). But to each his own :)

With a totally mono PA system, including monitor mixes, I guess all we can do is remove sources we don't really need. As the only electric guitarist I could remove all vocals except the lead vocal, the keyboard and most of the rhythm guitar, but keeping the piano.
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that will also make your mix less muddy. I do it in those scenarios as well, unless I'm directing :/

yes the same thing i did every time. spend time to play around with the in-ear. panning other instruments does the trick. i've been using shure se215. can't afford the custom ones yet. one day i will.

It's taken me a while to get use to using IEMs. What I miss the most is the "feel" of the bass coming out of the amp. I miss it big time.
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 7 жыл бұрын
Ya I hear you - I remedy that by trying to stand on or as close to the subs as I can. Apparently now they make risers that have a "sub" or rumble built into them. Never tried one but I'm definitely interested.

Having looked at various mixers, from price points up to £2000. Do any of them output a proper stereo moniter out? Many digital mixers, Behringer, Midas, Mackie,, and all analogue mixers seem to require 2 outputs, one for left and one for right. Right? I cant understand why 1 single XLR output can't be either mono or stereo? Or a TRS jack, that can be stereo right? There are 3 pins, 3 connections? The headphone out does it, why can't that be a switchable option on the aux or monitor outs? Esspecially at the £1500/£2000 mark? Would be much easier... Food for thought manufacturers...

As a guitar player - who is fairly new to the inear game - I find it super difficult to make things comfortable on the strap vs. inear's cable department. Do you have recommendations on how to place things? I go the box on the right-back pocket, cables come from behind, guitar strap on bottom. However always at some point I feel the cables pull a bit. Which is super annoying. And please dont say go wireless haha

I honestly don't have any store-bought ears, only custom molded ones (which are the only ones I'd recommend). But they are pricy. I'd say, based on my experience, that anything that's over $100 and isn't custom molded is probably a waste of money.

Hey nice video and I like the info on the panning. I don't think this really applies to a live gig environment somewhat. You might have a video covering this application? Lots of PA rigs are only setup for mono and although I use IEM as well, I can only use them in mono (one of the 2 outputs in the back) because there simply aren't enough AUX on the mixer for everyone to make use of taking up 2 of them to support stereo. So in this case, there's really no way to pan and such I assume since it's all mono?
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 6 жыл бұрын
Correct; if you're in mono you'll not be able to adjust panning. That's why most bands tour with their own in-ear rigs so that they're not at the house's mercy. It's getting much more affordable these days, too!
@gangrenebob7281
@gangrenebob7281 6 жыл бұрын
THnx for the reply. I have some IEM but I think they are in mono when I use them. I'm knew to it so I'm not sure. I plug into an AUX port on the mixer and my receiver box has 2 outputs in the back but I only use one to goto a single AUX on the mixer. I was under the impression that's how it works.
@deadbeatstudios
@deadbeatstudios 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's probably being sent to you in MONO if you're just connecting one cable (unless it's an XLR, you can get stereo from a single XLR). Hope that helps!

do you have to have individual transmitters for each band member if we all want our own customized mixes or can it all be done with one transmitter?

Thanks! I don't actually endorse any particular brand of in-ears, but I've been using Westones for the past decade because it's what the audiologist recommended. But I hear great things about 64's and JH Audio! Thanks for reaching out!

@deadbeatstudios

Hi cord - yes, many places do. When you have the opportunity, stereo is the way to go. It'll always depend on the house system. But more and more house boards are going stereo these days.

Agree 100%. We would do it for people, back when I was running sound, if time constraints allowed. On crowded bills and unfamiliar acts, without their own engineers, sometimes we couldn't accommodate. Also much easier now in the age of digital consoles.
