I'm 59 years old & was raised in Mississippi. I lived on a soybean & cattle farm. I worked with black farmhands whose ancestors worked the same land as slaves. For the same family. I got to experience first hand the drinking and blues playing in old electrified slave quarters. No running water. Just power. Tin roofs that would lull you to sleep at night if it was "drizzling". My alcoholic father had thrown me out at 16 & I went to work on that farm. The old shack I lived in still had newspapers on the wall from 1913 that was used as insulation. Complete with an outhouse. Labor laws were a joke & I'm grateful for it. I lived in a house that slaves built, worked and lived in. I didn't realize it at the time because of being young but I lived in a real part of history. I took a google walk around the edges of the old place a few days ago & though it's gravel roads are gone & it's been bulldozed and lies underneath overgrowth, I can pin point the exact spot where my beautiful little home was. I became a man there & learned so much from those old, black gentlemen. I miss the crap out of it. Hard work and all.

@Frequency Of Creation Have you ever listened to present day African a capella singing...i.e.Zulu ...you'll love it if you have never heard it before..something " spiritual" to it..how marvelous the variety in human vocal expression... another I think Is " Black Mambazo" a group I think it's made up of of Zulu people..( all on utube of course ).It's all designed around ..."Antiphony" or a call and response..in blues 3 chord structure the first two verses repeat then the third closes with an answer. A soloist call and response...my point is that the timbre or musical color of the African peoples is so unique.. like none other . White people can do great singing also but if they even try to imitate a " black" voice its a joke. sounds real phony... but to say blues is purely a "Black" genre or whatever u want is not quite true. As far as instrumentals they ( Africans) did not come or better said brought here to America as slaves with guitars or banjos harmonicas etc.Quite possible they made their own version of a stringed instrument.. Listen closely really closely to " hillbilly type music..its blues!!...and where did the " whites " get their instruments..Some say Spaniards left there guitars here..same as in Mexico. and even in Hawaiian islands... If you read in the bible book of Psalms ( songs) for one there is a mention of stringed instruments several thousand years ago!! Kind David was known as a virtuoso harpist being a shepherd as many back then were. The African people did have a one stringed instrument some thing played like a violin with a bow...going back to Ethiopian music. Who knows? When the Queen of Sheba visited the renowned King Solomon ..he may have exchanged gifts including those " harps" that she returned to Ethiopia with......but the blacks truly " refined" the music of what we like to call blues BETTER than most..but music is a gift from God if u think about it..we naturally have our own preferences. Blues actually follows a 3 chord system which originated with black Christian Gospel....unlike much of the European influence. We're a baby nation actually and music always evolves when mixed with other peoples music. So all said..Blues is not black... it's a blend of many influences...given the introduction of musical instruments... But perhaps you already knew that.
