I like Anje because you get to say "Draw, land, pass" and do everything at instant speed. Your turns are actually very quick. You end up doing a lot on the end step before your turn.

@Sid The sloth you can always ask if it's ok to shortcut it and write what are you gonna fetch and using the land you're gonna fetch if there is not any deck manipulation that will made you enforce that deck is shuffled. And fetch after your turn the written lands tapped(if used otherwise untapped)

You guys push a lot of content towards new players, which is amazing and healthy for the format. But I've been waiting for someone on this platform to go over advanced techniques and metagame analysis for experienced cEDH players or even Modern, Legacy, Standard players who find there way into the format, like I did. I want to know EVERYTHING I'd need to know to get that last 2% of edge when piloting Ad Naus or Gitrog or other types of strategies. But I'm not trying to understate how important this content for new players is. It is invaluable to the growth of the format.

While I get what you're saying. And think that would be cool. I think that final percent(s) come from practice and your individual meta. The right call at your table with that exact composition would only be the right call there, not at an almost identical setup somewhere else. Deck composition is a major point. My friend plays in heavy creature/stax/turbo meta. I play in midrange and turbo land. Our decks are designed to hand different threats. So my call is anticipating a different threat then he would expect.

@@energeticgorilla I personally don't use proxies but I'm very much welcome to others using them. I 100% understand that not everyone is in the same financial situation as I am and I don't personally want to prohibit someone from playing cEDH with me because they couldn't afford cards. Edit: I only personally ask that the proxy very clearly states what card it is proxying.

Always discuss with your group. I've played cedh in areas that have been hard-core no proxy. I've played in areas where every card has been proxied. The general census is proxies are perfectly fine as long as everyone can clearly see the card

I started cedh playing kodama sakashima. I recently built codie to dip my toes into popular win cons like adnaus and breach. The first game i played with codie my pod was very critical of my plays and rude because i had never resolved those cards before. Being talked down to, and told i had no way to win, was the most disheartening experience I've had in magic.

Godo was my first deck as well. It taught me how to evaluate when to go for a win or when to hold back and look for disruption or interaction before a win. I've won games dropping the 1 blood moon then going by for 4 turns after and no one had any mana to counter my godo. Verus I could have ramped out harder. Little things taught me how to manage your turn and respect other decks. Also taught me how to win turn 1 with treasonous orge 😂

As a Yuriko player I can back most of the info except that in cEDH it is mostly not tuned to flip huge CMC out of the top (with exception for Blinkmoth infusion and Temporal Trespass for a somewhat not very reliable plan C). In my experience Yuriko is rarely the fastest of the pod, so the player is asked to respond faster decks with counterspells and spot removal until an opening for Thoracle or Doomsday is found. But man, you nailed the “leveling up” this deck provides. It is highly interactive and FUN.

I got started with godo. Its a very fun deck and helped me understand when and why to mulligan a hand. One of my biggest "level up" moments in all of cedh is that any wording on a stax piece other than "Can't" means that you can play through it. I won a game with urza poly tyrant through 5-6 stax pieces by casting 1 cmc spells into a chalice on 1, bouncing the pieces by casting 1 mana counters targeting my own spells on the stack to break through the stax by bouncing them and eventually doing an infinite mana combo to win with urza.

My take is that Tasigur is better than Sidisi. the thing with Tasigur is that you got a combo piece in your command zone and you can have him out turn turn 1 if you have a good hand + due to his delve you can nearly always cast him for B only. sidisi on the other hand is bringing something to the table that most cedh decks can't handle well --> creatures en masse. buuuuut in the end it's up to you and how good you know your deck and how well you pilote it.

I think that new cEDH players come in with the mindset that they have to buy all the cards for a new deck they want to try. Proxy cards have such a negative stigma in regular EDH that they really feel like they have to pony up to participate. Giving them resources on where to go to get properly formatted proxies to print and encouragement that they can try whatever flavor of deck they want is important. This format does not need to be expensive. Thanks for all the great videos!

As a Najeela Player i have tried where players dont see that I go infinite if they dont interrupt me. I Love that Najeela since it give so manny options, but the mana base is EXPENSIVE.

I believe proxying to be good, but my group follows a proxy rule in which we should own the card or plan to own the card in the near future to be able to proxy the card. I do think it's fine to proxy without intention of owning the actual card, but I believe this helps keep decks in check and overall lower the power level of the group. If such things as a deck being too overtuned in our group then we talk to that person to see if we can fix that.

Just wondering were a good deck list for Kess would be to start at I had a Inalla deck and this would be a easy move. I don't have a twister so is there a easy replace or should it just be left out as my group does not allow proxies thanks for any and all help

Tatyova >> Gitrog. I think Tatyova is a pretty neat starter option, just not sure if it's as strong as Kinnan. Tatyova is very good at utilizing Mystic Sanctuary, enabling you to draw the spell you put on top right away. Tasigur is pretty interesting, but I think Tatyova is easier to build. I ended up having a cEDH deck (afaik it qualifies) because I just kept pushing it more. It started out as my strongest deck, so I rarely hesitated to upgrade it when I stumbled onto something interesting. Out go bad or so-so combos, in go even better ones, out go the cards that are always just clogging up my hand, in go leaner, more versatile options. It's a pretty weird deck, but it's really simple to operate for a cEDH deck, and it's consistent, the two things the deck needed to be.

So I have a couple of comments for this episode. Namely the effect Anje can have on new players. The worldgorger dragon can be really punishing for new players, especially if you’re playing against really interactive decks. Because getting all your permanents exiled 3 games in a row can be pretty disheartening rather than being able to learn proper timing. On my path to commander, I know we weren’t talking about budget this episode but I built tasigur reanimator as my powerful deck because I bought it for my budget rock modern deck, then slowly pivoted to a peer deck and then evolution as people in my meta ran a lot more graveyard hate and draw hate. I currently have an evo control tasigur list which is my favourite deck to pilot. It’s a great fun deck. Also I know it’s not good but I run lithoform engine for some really dumb stuff

I'm interested to see that there's no dedicated stax deck on this list. Do you think that stax is an archetype that people shouldn't play at an entry level?
@jadencima50
@jadencima50 3 жыл бұрын
Stax decks are usually anti meta so I guess they excluded them because they require more game knowledge.
@jonaswilliams9755
@jonaswilliams9755 3 жыл бұрын
@@jadencima50, I figured that would likely be the case. Even so, I'd expect some form of stax like GAAIV to be mentioned because it shows you how much the game state can change with one stax piece. Even so, stax pieces promote more conversation around when someone should or shouldn't remove them, and a beginner probably won't be as experienced with the format to defend why their stax piece should remain in play like someone who is a veteran might.
@jadencima50
@jadencima50 3 жыл бұрын
@@jonaswilliams9755 Honestly I was thinking that too. I think it’s important to show new cedh players how impactful and important to the health of the format stax is. This is especially important since a lot of casual settings view stax as “unfun”. I would even argue that learning by playing stax, while a much harder method, is probably the most well rounded method to learning since it involves understanding common wincons and the meta at large.

Stax has been said to be the most difficult deck to pilot. Stax decks have to navigate around their own stax pieces AND their opponents.
@jonaswilliams9755
@jonaswilliams9755 3 жыл бұрын
@@xOptoger, well, I think symmetrical stax is hard to pilot. There are still a lot of stax pieces that are asymmetrical, like Drannith Magistrate and Opposition Agent that make the idea of a skill floor for playing stax less true.

Timmy's like big spells and creatures Johnny's like combos and complex plays Spike's like to well spike just to clarify. Tasigur appeals to all 3 profiles and definitely makes for one of the best beginner decks as you can again build him however and still have a good shot at winning with the best part cheating out Eldrazi's but not the old Titans you would have to use a graveborn spell on the stack before their effect of them hitting the grave activates granted the grave still shuffles since they hit the grave but you cheat them out and suddenly started playing Arch enemy as everyone will target you and one person does not get to play.

So I have been playing magic the gathering since 2019… my favorite format is commander. Yesterday 10Feb23 I Try cEDH for the first time and they Let me borrow a Boros deck winota, joiner of forces and it was easy to pilot. I really think there is not science in this deck just beat face. I came back home and decide to make 2 cEDH decks, they are Narset, enlightened master ( extra turns and combat phases) and Yurok, the desecrated (landfall)…now that you mention tasigur, the golden fang and I can build it with big creatures I’m curious and I will start building it.

How can I take this seriously without Inalla, Curious Control, Lavinia (jk not a real deck), Frog and Sisay on this list?! Jokes aside, awesome vid, agree pretty much 100%. I think one bonus a few of these decks, especially Kess, have to offer is how easily the core can be moved over to other commanders. Tevesh+Kraum, Rog+Silas, Jeleva, Grixis Pirates, Armix+Kraum...the list go's on. Couple I would throw in there are Kels Scepter and Marwyn Elfball. Kels is in two great colors doing typical dimir stuff with some grind value and she's an outlet for IsoReb, and Marwyn is the most straightforward of the mono green decks. Selvala and Yisan get recommended for new player all time, but actually have a lot to think about. (Yisan is so tough to play!) Can't wait to see more from the two of you. You've got a really good, natural back-and-forth!

For finding decks that you plays stuff that you alreadu play, I used to play aggro a lot. Cedh is not really an aggro format, with the exception of godo and winota. are there other options that have aggro decks? Godo doesnt really feel like an aggro deck, since its just waiting until you equip helm of the host (a combo mindset).

My first deck was Nath, I know he's fringe cEDH but I had an abzan elf deck from the lorwyn days which was just brutal, it was able to compete with my friends back in the day who had these competitive level decks. I turned it into a Nath EDH deck (and Rhys, but found Selesnya too boring) Started off as a elfball discard and very quickly became a degenerate Stax deck. So he is my pet deck and was what transitioned me away from the more Timmy playstyle and for that I will always be grateful to him.
