I'll bet. I wrote for magazines in the UK back in the day and still have my "Test" region free PS2 - I always use it due to so many great games from other regions.

There's two eras in gaming I deem the golden ages - the Spectrum era, and the PS2 era. There were so many great games in those times. Even though I wrote freelance for a few UK magamzines at the time and had a really good knowledge of the PS2 catalogue, I'm still finding games I either missed or overlooked back then. For example, I've missed Endonesia. I shall be checking that out soon. It's a real shame current triple A has gone down the tubes as these were truly great times.

If you dig deeper in Japanese only catalogs in any video game console, you'll be impressed and depressed.. I was also surprised for already recognizing all of those PS2 games, except 1 ! I really love diving in Japanese video games rabid holes ! Looking for a PS3 Japanese Exclusives video, there're so many gems ;)

The Japanese port of Dragon Quest V on the PS2 is very good also. An English fan translation is available for it too.

I'd also add that if anyone has trouble tracking this down, there's a great English release for the DS too and that is pretty damned great.

I played that Fist of the North Star in March of last year on a Japanese Arcade machine at a con and was amazed how smooth/cartoonish the graphics were. 8 months later I randomly found out it had been released on the PS2 in Japan so picked it up then had my North America PS2 region unlocked. Really opening up a lot of games we never received here. I did pick up a few from Europe but the screen keeps scrolling upwards on all 3 (He-Man, Conan, and Xayanide 2) so no idea what that’s all about.

Front Mission 5 not being released outside Japan still hurts me to this day.
@Bakamoichigei Жыл бұрын
I bought Front Mission 5 when it came out, it's absolutely amazing and a worthy swan song for the series. (Don't @ me about any real-time FM game which isn't Front Mission Alternative for the PSX. 😒) A.C.E. is another awesome one... It's basically Super Robot Wars for people who prefer the Gundam vs. series style 3rd-person combat games to SRW's strategy titles. (And that opening cinematic is a certified banger.) One of the best unlocalized Gundam titles (And lord knows there's a metric facktonne of them on PS2!) is Mobile Suit Gundam Climax U.C. which is a compilation of literally all Universal Century era content... In the single player story campaign, you can live through the entire timeline, and you're given chances to choose allegiance after each conflict, like if you were with the Federation during the 0083 segment, you choose whether to join the Titans, join AEUG, or defect to Zeon for the Zeta segment. And after Char's Counterattack, you choose a character from your life to settle down with, and your _kid_ takes over as the player character in the F91 and Victory portions of the timeline! It's _wild!_

It sucks we never got Dance Summit 2001. I was (and still am) a HUGE Bust-A-Groove fan (I still listen to the soundtrack) and it would have been nice to have a PS2 version of this game (so to speak).

I'm gonna say what everyone is thinking and has been too afraid to say for over 20 years. The PS2 deserved to kill off the Dreamcast and the Dreamcast had it coming. The Dreamcast wasn't ahead of its time it was of its time. It had some great quirks and features but the PS2 nailed the basics. It even pandered to the weebs and brought Kingdom Hearts to the World.
@MicahtheDrumCorpsPseudoboomer Жыл бұрын
The Dreamcast was far ahead of its time in one aspect only: order-independent transparency. That's a contributing factor as to how the Gamecube ports of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 look worse than the Dreamcast originals.
@crunchyfrog555 Жыл бұрын
Well, it ain't a competition really. Or at least from the consumer perspective it shouldn't be as it's really stupid. You're not married to a console. The more games the better. The Dreamcast only got killed off by Sega's incompetence. They released early which was a good move, but they absolutely wrecked it by the usual problems - lack of support and not offering something that rivals were about to do better - DVD playback. They were absolutely poised to make good ground by getting out first but failed to back it up by getting enough of a footprint out there in games. EA didn't supoprt them, and you NEED that sort of thing. So by the time the PS2 was announced and had DVD playback built in, the Dreamcast was screwed. Didn't matter if they even had a mass of support from that point. The sales tanked because the public saw a DVD player and a console for the same price and it was a no brainer. The Dreamcast was a great console. It did it's job well and is a pretty well designed console. It's bloody easy to repair for a start. And the games it does have as far as the UK and the US go, are pretty good too, as there's a lot of really good games in there. But Sega's continuing stupid business practices were the reason it tanked. The writing was on the wall from when they had Sega US and Sega Japan designing different things against each other in the MegaDrive days.

Dreamcast nailed the basics. The PS2 failed at everything game related and nailed marketing.
