Now over 100 titles are playable in FPPS4 - an open source PS4 emulator ( compatibility layer ) that runs on your PC. But that's not all, RPCSX is another PS4 emulator that's slowly booting into commercial games as well. So, let's discuss the latest PlayStation 4 emulation updates.

Probably official. Moore's Law is dead. Improvements in CPU/GPU performance are becoming smaller and smaller with each new hardware generation. We need a major new breakthrough in chip technology (something akin to the discovery of the transistor in 1947), before we are able to see the gains that will make proper PS4 emulation possible. The fact that this isn't an emulator makes me really excited, with how slow hardware development is nowadays, it would take many many years to emulate AAA ps4 games, but with a compatibility layer, it might be just around the corner.

Yeah so most indie games are the testing grounds for ps4 emulation, however they hope that doing this can help understand all the basics of the ps4. This would pretty much help in opening the gateways up for triple AAA titles and later on first party titles. Indie games help understand how the processing & computing works and how shaders, graphics work and eventually how all of this shapes into arbitrary code execution and how to emulate that or write code specifically designed to emulate this process… PS3 emulation was done the same way, look at how fast ps3 emulation has become😅

I installed PT the week it was delisted, shipped my PS4 to Sony for repairs, and received a factory reset unit back after that. Never played it. Edit: I could not have known it was about to be delisted when I made that choice.

Emulation gets alot harder as hardware gets more complex. 10 years after PS2 released the emulation was much further along than 10 years after PS3 released ect. I doubt we will ever see a PS5 emulator

The funniest part about the fake PS4 emulator is the fact that they don't even list Linux, you know, the OS that would actually expect to be the most prominently displayed since most open source developers actually use and build on that first lol

No, that's kinda wrong. Even if FOSS it must dominantly in Linux, that doesn't mean the you have to expect a software to be automatically on Linux. It makes more sense to argue for a PS4 emulator to be first on Linux because its OS is based on FreeBSD and that's more similar to Linux... and windows isn't even close. So it might be more likely to create an emulator that's a really specialized transition layer like Wine/Proton, except way more complex. But no one would develop an emulator just for Linux, if most players would use it on Windows.

By then, you won't be able to buy games. They will all be digital, and timed, so they expire after a set amount of time. You will pay more to rent a game for six weeks, than it currently costs to buy it forever. When all game sales are digital, then the games companies will be able to stop a game from starting on your machine, by making the game only start if it can connect to the company's servers and verify that your copy is allowed to run at that time. Though if the company is generous, then they might make it that the game only needs to connect to verify itself every third or fourth time that you run it.

And advocating for DRM-Free digital like GOG - i.e. own your games and don't rely on corporate servers and services. I believe a - Right to (personally) own act - needs to implement for consumer rights and more games studios to transition to independent studios. 1% shareholders are ruined/ruining gaming.

The PS4 bases on a FreeBSD kernel and the hardware is much closer to the PC than any previous playstation. I assume a hypervisor like QEMU could be an interesting start, like XQEMU for XBOX.

Yeah the Xbox won’t be jailbroken at all the hypervisor is tied to the cloud so any exploit would get rejected… Someone would have to write or edit the firmware for a custom firmware disabling the internet check and then passing thru replicating the Xbox keys to let games be played with out an internet check… which is impossible because those keys are on the cloud and checked via persons Microsoft account… You would pretty much have to have a Xbox dev kit to be able to write this firmware and have full sdk and admin privileges which cannot be accessed or attained by a normal user you would have to be working at Microsoft or Xbox division to have that unique I.D that gives you said privileges…

​@@rayojordan2838The keys still need to be stored for offline use. So you just need to rewrite the fw to always accept those key, or reverse enginneer those keys. Both task isn't impossible but hard. Xbox dev kit isn't necessary. Xbox jailbreak/emu will always be none because there aren't any worth exclusive games on it.

It's amazing how a system as complex as a PS4 is being emulated a decade after it was released, not unlike how I was playing NESticle about a decade after the NES/Famicom came out. Emulation keeps on humming along like it always has... Edit: y'all are reading my comment different than I intended. I'm amazed by the similarity in time between the PS4 and NES emulation relative to their console launch dates, not the complexity of the PS4 from a technical standpoint. Those of you stating the obvious - that it's a glorified AMD PC like the Xbone - are also missing the point that if it were *so easy* to emulate, we would also have full 3D emulation by now. Hardware alone isn't what makes something complicated.

If anything the PS4 is easier in the long run to emulate as it is using similar architecture to modern PCs. The harder ones to emulate over time have been the early 3D capable systems that use many multiple chips to do tasks as it takes up way more CPU cycles to do the extra processes. That's why it took so long for something like the Saturn to get get good emulation in comparison to other consoles of the time.

We'll see if full emulation is possible. Currently neither the 360 or PS3 are "fully" emulatable. In fact, they're pretty far behind. Don't get me wrong, PS3 is at 70%, but Dolphin is at 99+% and Xemu is at 80%. So, you know, PS4 is probably a bit far off.

@@TheMahayanistboth the 360 and PS3 aren’t X86-64 based, so there’s a lot more emulation overhead compared to the generation after which is all X86. The cell architecture on the PS3 specifically is a bear compared to PPC on the 360/GC/Wii

And I don't think they're the best examples as something like the Switch is also almost "fully" emulateable. Ninja Gaiden 2 emulation is still pretty jank... I just pulled the trigger on a used One X for backwards compatibility with NG2, Otogi 1 and 2, and some Dead or Alive games since they don't emulate very well.

Pretty interesting. Could you do a video on GT PSP/5/6, Sport and 7. Polyphony 's save file checks for other user's save files. I'm curious about the memory card/user save files methods they use. Putting them up for the GT Fandom Wiki and done a few tests but as no idea how it works in the code only from particular console/memory card tests I was wondering if I could find someone who can look further. I've checked GT PSP via PPSSPP whether region or device on physical hardware (I don't know a digital copy of GT PSP so memory card checks in 2 PSP 1000/2000 model and WA show I discovered it when I wanted to move my memory card to a 2000 for TV play via the component cable). PS3 I have tested user name, same consoles different PS3. No PS account only local accounts, no cloud saves either. A lot of factors to consider. GT5 Prologue has no such checks only GT PSP/5 & 6 do. I have used base PS3 hard drives. Backup files can't be moved only the regular save. So it's been interesting looking at it from a player perspective going oh I can move them to a USB but as long as the original user loads it again ah ok. Or memory ca Rd s on that originally PSP or user? Very interesting questions of user ID, account type local or PS online/cloud saves, region of the game or console to see if regional save blocking, hard drive, device ID, anything possible to find another the checks. My guess is GT5 Prologue or past games they thought hmm saves files online, cheating online. Their servers have limits with GT Sport & 7 but online save checks hmm and offline 1.69 patch hmm but other modes on in offline mode but not in 1.69 patch. The changes are just interesting coverage. Doing these as well as the Nissan 350z, Mitsubishi Airtrek and more alter one make versions on the wiki has been interesting. The alter versions people have covered with disk's and prototypes but never the save checks in the games. Only I seemed to have noticed it that I see recorded online. Which as I make wiki pages for Legacy Fabric a Minecraft mod space and people are focused on modern Fabric modding yeah it says a lot when technical things or eyes are elsewhere sometimes and I like to fill in info. Never does anything ellike it before. I'm not tech expert like many others uncovering the cheats or anything. But if anyone does with PSP/PS3 hardware or emulation then just the cheats for PSP/GT4 by all means. I mean sure you see GameFaqs save files, did they notice there or other means. No idea. Or just thought about online during the GT4 Online Beta maybe? Any number of possibilities. Sport & 7 with servers I assume is a furthering of that logic. Also a physical copy of GT Sport as 1.0-1.68 versus 1.69 what modes, what is offline, what a save file is like between 2 PS4s and user or region or device hard drive. Those kinds of things. I have yet to test. Was going to before 1.69 but never had the time. The game is big too. But 1.0 and 1.69 or any server maintenance footage I tried to get for differences but not edited it. People have covered the states somewhat over the years but not completely a timeline of it.

The translation layer approach taken by FPPS4 looks promising. I hope it develops quickly as breakthroughs are made, like how Proton got most Windows games running on Steam Deck / Linux. Shouldn't require such a beefy PC either. The biggest hurdle seems to be Sony's GNM/GNMX graphics API documentation being behind closed doors.

Can you give me an example? PS4 to me was just meh. But I had a PC at the times alongside my PS4 and it was almost always better on PC? PS3 was interesting, but PS2 PS1 were great. For me PS3 is king, purely because of how well Sega Genesis/PS1/PS2 emulators have been in stark contrast to RPCS3. Either way, I felt the PS4 was underwhelming.

I always build my pc thinking on emulation as a top prio, since any current gen "i5" is enough to run pc games but i7/i9 is almost (not always) a must for emulation I always go for those tiers of cpu (or AMD equivalent) that's mainly what u need for emulation in general worry about cpu/motherboard/ram/nvme and cheap out on the gpu u can always upgrade that component down the line while everything else is a MUST for emulation.

android gaming handhelds are great for up to 6th gen and current/upcoming handheld PCs are already great for 7th gen. You can get those for 1/4 to 1/2 the price of a proper build. I say this as a life long builder with a high end PC, if I were to start today I'd buy a handheld.

So it doesn't cost them anything since they don't do any of the work except sell the game on Steam. That's why game servers eventually get shut down and multiplayer games even on PC don't function after a while without workarounds like someone reverse engineering the matchmaking

tbh, i think once they get a grasp on the technical side, it will go much faster than the development of rpcs3. since its much closer to a standard pc than the ps3 was with its alien architecture. perhaps we might also see passable performance since there may be less translation layers that chew up performance, similar to xenia.

That's not always true. A lot of it depends on the complexity of the original hardware. I fully expect once ps4 emulators/compatibility layers have matured, they're likely to perform better than rpcs3 on the same hardware

I suspect the upfront development cost of getting PS4 emulation work is high but it will hockeystick pretty hard once they are able to do any 3D at all since most games are using high level engines written for multiple x86 architectures.
