It's a thing that's really bothered me as of late... The cause is actually mostly because of multiplatform games where the XBox (and SEGA) controllers have A and B opposite of the intended Yes and No feature (a red circle being universally recognized as positive in Japan).

Well only for PS and PS2 I think. PS3 and beyond weren't really the real competitors there, I think Xbox 360 was Nintendo's worst nightmare then? But yeah maybe PS4 was the big one in its generation, now that I think of it... But anyway we can't deny that the Nintendo Switch finally after 4 generations of videogame made Nintendo be in the indisputable top again.

So to summarize. Nintendo had an agreement with Sony. They broke that agreement and Sony releases the Playstation. Later Microsoft sees Playstation as a threat for becoming the "central focal point" in households. They decide to answer this threat with the Xbox. Nintendo, in breaking a single deal, created both their major competitors. Also you could argue they are to thank for all the options in the gaming market today. Kinda sorta.

That would also mean that its because of Nintendo that Sega did went software only. It's a shame Nintendo ever made that deal with Phillips but it's funny how outside of Japan Nintendo is now th lovable underdog. Sony and Microsoft on the otherhand have but so much effort onto making their consoles multimedia hubs they have become similar to PCs, only not as versatile.

Unshaved Stuff devilmaycryagency I sort of agree with his "lovable underdog" statement. true, the 3DS had amazing sales, and the Wii U has a lot of potential and could become a high selling system if/when better games come out. but the problem is that too many people nowadays insist that good games require guns, shooting, etc.. that's why the Halo series, the GTA series, and the CoD series (to name a few) are so popular despite each game in the series being quite similar (very few gameplay changes, the only notable differences being updated graphics and sometimes new stories). most people nowadays are also obsessed with good graphics, also insisting that games that don't have the highest quality graphics are therefore shit. Nintendo, on the other hand, doesn't go for either of those. they have a few games with guns and stuff, and they have a few games with graphics better than anything else for the generation, but they tend to more go for new gaming mechanics, new ways to play, and family entertainment. you can play Mario Party with your entire family, even overprotective parents. but good luck getting many entire families to play GTA V. good luck getting a (video game) trigger happy gamer to play Mario, or a graphics addict to play LoZ. it won't happen. that's why you can sort of consider Nintendo to be the "lovable underdog".

The Zelda series has always been Nintendo's way to show everyone what their console can do: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword took advantage of everything their respective console could offer, specially Twilight Princess and Majora's Mask (the N64 couldn't even keep up with OoT, which is pretty noticeable when you take the 20 fps thing into account). Other than that, I sort of agree.

A great lesson in video game history! Though one point not mentioned was that due to Sony commanding the cd-rom format of the Nintendo-playstation they wanted half of all profits for every game sold in that format. That's why Nintendo backed out of the deal. But truly this was a good decision because it might've turned out really bad for the gaming industry . . .

Nintendo did not want to honor the their half of the agreement with Sony and risk losing profits, should people buy the Sony version of the product. If Sony breaks that contract, Sony does not have those rights any more. Nintendo got nervous and made a dick move and now they have been paying for it for almost 2 decades.

Tomb Raider sucked then, I've never heard of Time Splitters, Hitman, Red Faction, or Medal of Honor so they must be really popular. Also, Mortal Kombat sucked on PlayStation. Every other one was really great. Actually, one of the best PlayStation games, Crash Bandicoot was solely made to compete with Nintendo. Was Nintendo forced to do that? No. Nintendo wins.

***** the original Tomb Raider is what every game that tries to be an immersive experience is based off. If you haven't ever played the first Time Splitter game for PS2, I highly recommend you do, the gameplay is perfect and it has the greatest multiplayer ever. You've never heard of the Hitman games or Medal of Honor?... really? And every other Mortal Kombat game you refer to were *for* the Playstation consoles.

I love Nintendo, but every time I hear the PSX Story I think they thoroughly deserved it. This should be a lesson for everyone on how _not_ to do bussiness. You don't just back out of a deal at the last moment and seek a different partner. Either you try to renegotiate the terms first if you're not happy with them or try a more civil approach.

God damn, I remember how much I wanted a Net Yaroze after I read about it as a kid. Playstation blew my mind with the first Crash Bandicoot, that I saw at my dad's friend's house. This console was the single biggest jump we had in console gaming - hard to think what could be as big today as the transition from 2D to 3D was back then.

Good episode, but you really under played Sony's greed in the Original contract with Nintendo. The reason Nintendo was "uneasy" was because Sony snuck in (from what I understand, literally fine print on the last few pages) a clause which allowed them to retain all of the distribution rights. This meant that they would've been taking an enormous amount of profits for themselves. Which would've left the then relatively much smaller Nintendo with practically no advantage in the arrangement, possibly even bankrupt them. Yet Sony would get almost everything. So yeah, that's why they felt uneasy, they were being totally taken advantage of. Not saying the way Nintendo handled it was ethical, but Sony was hardly innocent in that endeavor.

Very correct. Both parties could have renegotiated to more favorable standing but Nintendo did a dick move in letting Sony announce it then the next day saying screw Sony we are going with Phillips. Nintendo could have terminated the agreement behind closed doors and went with Phillips instead of letting Sony be humiliated. That shows the arrogance Nintendo had and still has and that is what is causing their current problems even today.

WSoulMoony Nintendo is still highly arrogant. You can totally see it with the Wii U. They make their systems and they expect everyone to make games for it. They have this idea of that everyone should be bowing at their feet instead of them going out there to get support for their console. Nintendo has this control issue that they never grew out of, it helped them during the 8 and 16 bit era but after that every Nintendo console (outside of the Wii) has sold less and less because of their issues and their stubborn refusal to change with the market.

snake2006 you really seem to be ignoring their handheld consoles with that entire comment. and I disagree about them wanting everyone to bow at their feet. they create interesting and new ways to play games. these mechanics, being really new, are not perfect upon being released, and game designers need to get used to the new control styles. upon creating the Wii which mainly used motion controls, you'll notice that many game designers either ignored it, or worked around it using the GCN controller compatibility, at least at first. now, the Wii U has removed the GCN controller compatibility and added a possible fifth controller that is pretty well a tablet. do you expect them to instantly be able to design games that incorporate the tablet effectively (or at all), or would you rather they ignored it and treated the Wii U as they had been finally managing with the Wii, making use of the motion features only? Nintendo didn't make it easy on game designers to use this (for gaming) new technology, true, however they have opened up a much larger realm of possibilities once you can figure it out. similar to motion controls, however, in about a year or two, Sony will almost directly copy the feature for their PS4's to use as an extension, then Microsoft will try to use it without obviously stealing it and will make something that everyone will find extremely buggy at first but in a few years when the next new generation happens will supposedly have been perfected

Nintendo. A Company so powerful and influentual it's inadvertently responsible for so much of gaming. -Sonic the Hedgehog is born because of Mario, who in turn inspired other animal-based mascots like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. -Playstation is born because of a bad deal with them and Sony.

Actually Mario came after the 2-d, side-scrolling PAC-Man game based off of a Kids show(I can't remember the name) without that Mario probably wouldn't exist(beyond jump man), but you wouldn't say PAC-Man is responsible for Mario, Sonic, and all other animal characters in games would you? In fact a lot of Nintendo's earlier games clones of lesser known games that couldn't get the same recognition because they didn't have the marketing power Nintendo does.

PlayStation 1, ah those glorious and good old days, probably one of the reasons i ever got into gaming (also the GameBoy's Pokemon series), but for console gaming it has to be PS1 it's simplicity at the time and 3D graphics we're perfect, fun, enjoyable, lots of replay value in most tiles that we're released (still is today) and like i say started me into the world of video games, thank you Sony for making those great first few years epic and memorable childhood times :)

Xbox - Did You Know Gaming? Microsoft had nothing to do with the gaming industry and then one day decided "Hey let's make a console" and they did and it sucked, but luckily for them a third-party studio released a sci-fi shooter that wasn't expected to succeed and it took off, attracting non-gamers of all kinds into gaming and leading the way for the awful action/simulator driven industry we have today. That shooter was called Halo: Combat Evolved and it was good. It wasn't "scrap everything else about gaming and only make games like this" kinda good, but the industry did that anyway.

Well if you think about it Nintendo doesn't really have any rivals. Sony and Microsoft compete directly, but Nintendo sells their products to a different type of consumers. Nintendo markets their products towards family oriented gaming but offers games and features for standalone players as well. Sony and Microsoft direct their marketing towards more hardcore gamers.
