This wasn't a given though. Only if the disc had both a CD-ROM section for the game and a CD audio section for standard 44100kHz PCM audio. Different standards. This was only feasible on smaller / earlier games as the audio would take up so much of the disc. It became much more efficient to compress it to a proprietary format and include it within the normal data files and it be 100% CD-ROM. You can't play CD-ROMs in an audio CD player.

It didn't work with most games though. Storing the music as red-book audio on a non CD-ROM portion of the disc was too costly, and could take up most of the disc. It was far more common, especially later into the PS1's life, to store the music in a compressed, proprietary format as part of the game's regular data files and have the disc as 100% CD-ROM. If you did this with all the games you had, you must have somehow had only games that used this method. I'm not saying you're lying or misremembering, but...

The 1st track was a actual heavy rerecorded Metal version of Ice Ice Baby with Vanilla Ice actually doing screaming vocals on it. It was pretty awesome! Whenever you got a new game that was one of the 1st things you did. To see what was on it, if game used real music. Funny thing is, I'm actually playing Smackdown 2 on my ORIGINAL psx as we speak. And there was a reset button on the console. And the black (purple) dyed bottoms helped inprove disc reads. And some companies didn't print on dyed discs and they tend to have more errors from various forms of disc abuse. And some games had files on them that you could access via a PC like wallpapers and such. And there were games that had codes you could input at various menus or via hitting the right button sequence at the start screen. Yes, we did all of this as these things were told to is on forums like GameFAQs and through gaming magazines.

Pretty Sure Sony Fully Advertised this as a feature before the Playstation even came out at press conferences and tech demos. This was like the first thing kids talked about and tried immediately. You do realize that the PlayStation was a ton of kid’s first CD Player. So the curiosity to see what happened if we put the disc into our parents Stereo’s cd player was done and news of it working was spread like a massive wild fire. We lived in an era where CD albums had secret tracks and song intros that can only be heard if the track was played from the track before it, but you couldn’t skip to these hidden song intros, and end of album extra tracks. So yeah we definitely check every game and every track on every PS1 game we had. In the 90’s, all we had was time to entertain ourselves and tinker with everything we had in contact.

The disc is a dual 2-in-1 disc, a data disc and an audio disc, because this way it's possible to store high quality music as audio CD. One example with this technique is the old PC game, called "Tuneland" by "7th Level", the songs and some additional things are stored on the disc separately as audio CD.

@Shawn Rasmussen The video is talking about a very specific type of old PS1 ((and even sega saturn, PC and dreamcast)) game. Early on in the console's life cycle some company's ((if the game didn't take up much of the disc space)) would put high quality audio music on to the disc too, which could be played inside a CD player. The poster of this video has also been an idiot and not mentioned you should NOT play track 1, as that is the game's data track and the soundtracks will always start on track 2. If you want to look into what games had this, just type in Redbook Audio discs, again it wasn't just the ps1 that did it either, ANY CD based console or pc game had the ability, even the pc engine's CD addon.

This was what also happened if your game didn’t read properly. Your PlayStation would think it’s a CD and it would load up the soundtrack. That’s when you would remove the cd and try to clean the scratches, put toothpaste on it and put the disc in the freezer. All sorts of weird fixes were being told and we tried all of them. Eventually it’d work and the game would load.

That's how PS1 was able to save a lot of space in programming by using ROMS stacked with the audio tracks because it was easier to play a track rather than hunt through the disc for the data. It helped make the games run quicker. That's how I understood it at least.
