"Was perfected and expanded upon", then. Jrpgs are defined by the characteristics they borrowed from Ultima 3 but altered to appeal to Japanese sensibilities, particularly in included themes and art style, and even in jrpgs that deviated from the standard formula, there is still a time-based component to the battles that doesn't exist in arpgs or wrpgs because it doesn't remove the turn-based component. And until very recently, there was not a notable catalogue of western rpgs that possessed any of these characteristics. They were extreme outliers. Japan saw the potential and made it central to their video games. Western companies did not.

Nico Estefan ok so.. JRPG means Japanese-Role-Playing-Game. It doesn’t include every game made in japan, it’s a style thing. Persona, Final fantasy, etc, they’re all Jrps. This is because of their art style, their gameplay, etc. Dark souls does not fit in the jrpg genre because of the numerous big points it misses out on. Simply saying it’s a jrpg because it’s made in japan is kind of unfair as you don’t call rpgs made in the US “ARPGs” so yeah the Japanese part of jrpgs does not have to do with it specifically being made in japan
@Feja25034 жыл бұрын
@Unamite, ARPG, unfair? I think you're missing one big point here... We got the rpg games from japan, thus jrpg was created to split them apart. It would be weird if we called them Western RPG's(in daily life) since that is where we are (probably)FROM. But the term Wrpg actually does exist. Guess what, they use it in non western countries a lot. While japan called their games rpg.. Also, guess what, wrpg's are made in the west. So you complain about Arpg not existing, while we have wrpg. Which includes the US. Only i usually dont call stuff made in my country ... something. With that same logic tho I'm not sure if I would include monster Hunter on this list 🤔
@Moments-in-Frames4 жыл бұрын
And to add to this, I think it's important to note that while JRPGs might have started out as games simply made in Japan, they've become so iconic and unique that they've developed their own identity. There's a set of traits that we associate with JRPGs that have culminated over decades. And while there are a ton of RPGs made in Japan, if they don't fit into those traits we associate with JRPGs, we usually don't categorize them as such. When was the last time you asked someone what their favorite JRPG is and they replied with Bloodborne? Just doesn't really happen. So if you wanna be extremely technical, then yes all of these games are JRPGs, but no one is calling it that. Technically fireball is a kind of whiskey but no one shows up to a party with fireball if asked to bring whiskey lmao
@EtchaSketch3334 жыл бұрын
Actually a lot of people do in fact consider blood born a jrpg. (google it) Im going to copy and paste a comment I made elsewhere because I don't want to type out basically the same response again but here is how I see it. "Dark souls is a jrpg. Its not that hard. It is an rpg, made in Japan. We have western rpgs (wrpg). Would you call a western styled game that was made in Japan a wrpg? I have played a krpg (Korean rpg) that is very similar to jrpgs (Magna Carta 2) but it is called a krpg because it was made in Korea. RPG is a genre. Jrpg, Wrpg, Krpg, ect, are distinctions between where that rpg was created, not a genre in itself. This is why games like kingdom hearts and the tales series can still be called jrpgs even though they have action combat instead of traditional turn based. If your argument is because of those games art style then are you saying that a jrpg is just an artistic genre distinction? If someone made an anime esc art styled turn base rpg in America would you call it a jrpg? If so, we will have to agree to disagree."
@GoochTaylor4 жыл бұрын
There are JRPGs and there are action RPGs. Monster Hunter, for me, falls into the same category as Dark Souls and the like as an action RPG. well... as a saga the trails one is epic I give u that (pacing in Cold Steel is all but great for example but taken as a whole...). Berseria is more blatantly political and radical so personally that would be my n.1. Ni No Kuni 2 and DragonQuest11... hey it's their list they are entitled to do what they like. Anyway the Cold Steel games are vita ports, I believe that is why they were not selected. Just like YS8 for example. I may be wrong eh?!...

Do you know if the BR scaling difficulty is the same in the ps4 remastered version as it was in x360. Rob is right, there are defintely enough specific tropes associated with the term "JRPG" that it has become a genre unto itself. Having the term rigidly refer to as 'an RPG made in japan' seems so pointless now, since Japan has put out western style RPGs and the west has put out Japanese style RPGs, what would be the point? If that's literally all it means then just say RPG.
@waveplay39784 жыл бұрын
yup this one gets it. It may have original meant RPG made in Japan, but at that time those games were stylistically so different from Western games that the term became increasingly associated with the stylistic conventions (anime aesthetic and tropes, linear narratives as opposed to focus on maximizing choice & consequence), outgrowing the geographical distinction. Dark Souls is the PERFECT example of how this rigid definition is outdated now.
