4:40 ... To answer your existential questions Rob: -Is what I perceive as blue actually orange to someone else? Probably not but the human brain is one mystery we haven't solved yet, so there is literally no way to tell. -Is gravity real? Yes but not in the way most people think, it's currently believed to be more a consequence of mass curving spacetime than a straight-up force pulling you down. and, most importantly -Why are we here? Well, although a defined purpose of existence is unlikely humans have a wonderful knack of finding meaning in most everything they do. Find contentment in watching a sunset? that's meaning. Enjoy playing video games or hanging out with your friends? That's meaning. The journey is more important than the destination and though we don't know where we're going meaning is to be found along the way, not at the end.

That being said, I always knew it was a cross (I mean, in my language it's being called "krzyżyk", meaning "little cross" by just about anyone, so I didn't have the option to get it wrong), but in English, it's still easier to call it "ex" than "cross".

A cross is also a well-known piece of Western iconography. It would be almost understandable if Sony originally deemed it to be a cross, but it's frankly bizarre that a European branch of Sony would refer to it as a cross. An X on the other hand is also fairly iconic, but for different reasons...think X marks the spot. The button on the Switch joy con is much more of a cross, though even that I refer to as a Plus (or just Start because I can't get away from Start and Select no matter how much controller designers try to make me).

To make it more confusing, there’s another word that is spelled similarly but is pronounced differently and has a different meaning! The problem with the "X" button being called that, probably stems from other consoles having *only* letters on their controllers. Most of them have A,B,Y, and X. And as far as the shape of the "X", well think about it: a treasure map would say "X marks the spot" and not "Cross marks the spot", and those are the same shape, normally, as they are on the PlayStation controller. Just a thought.

I don’t care if it’s officially pronounced as “tee-dus”, he will always be “tide-us” to me. Also, Yuna’s name is Okinawan for “moon” and Tidus’s name is based on the Okinawan word for “sun” so they’re the sun and moon!! You can also interpret his name as like the tide in the sea. Either way, tee-dus makes no sense to me...

There's a quest in The Witcher 3 where Geralt mentions that he's called every horse he's had "Roach," though it may be dependent on your dialogue choices. As I recall, it's actually in the main quest line, though I could be mistaken on that. I did initially think Roach was a stallion, but that's just because it sounds more like a male name to me.

I felt that with the "fewer" bit. I'm often saying that under my breath when people use "less" incorrectly. Also, to me, the X on the Playstation controller still only makes sense when called by the name of the letter. A cross is associated with a "t" shape. It would be like saying the square button should be called "diamond". Yes, turn a diamond shape on its side and it looks more like a square (especially if it was a fatter diamond), but it's how we associate some shapes and a diamond on its side will be a square (or more likely, a parallelogram). But it does make me wonder if anybody calls the circle an "O".

The letter "i" has more of a "ee" pronunciation in Japanese, if I recall correctly.
@mrpenguin22474 жыл бұрын
Yup, the letter “i” has only the “ay” pronunciation in the English language as far as I’m aware. All other languages pronounce it “ehh” or “ee”. I mean only English speakers would call the island of Ibiza “aybeetha”
@mnArqal934 жыл бұрын
I've been learning Japanese, and I use to get caught out with the "i" and "ee" sounds at the start quite a lot. For example, you say words like tori and ni by using the "ee" sound. Words like sore and neko use the "eh" for the e. The Japanese Katakana for the "ee" sound looks like a capital i. Also, if you look at the IPA for English as well, the "ɪ" symbol (looks like a capital i) is for the "ee" sound. The "e" is a "eh" sound.
@mnArqal934 жыл бұрын

@fujitafunk4 жыл бұрын
Same. It’s a strange pronunciation too because it’s clearly based off Chinese romanization. If you see that spelling in Taiwan, it’s pronounced: “Zheng” or “Zhung.” In Cantonese it’s “Jaang.” This being based off the pronunciation of the actual character 曾. So I’m unsure where the “Sung” pronunciation comes from.

What about Aries (US) vs Areith (Japan) or that it's M-ah-co not Make-o reactors in FF7...
@Tiana_atr4 жыл бұрын
@@amyhoard1222 Those in particular are due to quirks of the Japanese language. Japanese has no "th" sound in it. "su" is the closest syllable they have and so could swing to Aeris or Aerith in English. It's like how 'r's and 'l's get mixed up because the r consonant is kind of a combination of both. Mah-ko is due to how japanese is a syllabry. You have 5 vowels that make up the base sounds: a (ah), i (ee), u (uu), e (eh), o (oh) and a set of consonants are added to the vowels to make up the rest of the syllables. Mako is because ma = mah. May-ko would be spelled meiko (the i extends the e syllable in this situation) Edit: This is also why its ee-co cause in japanese i makes a hard e sound And the character Eiko is ehh-ko cause the 'i' after the e extends the e's sound And theres your japanese lesson for the day
