At its core, Jacques Tati’s 1967 Playtime is a film about modernity. It is a humorous take on the mundanity and frivolity of modern life. Playtime may seem like “just another 60s flick” at first, but it’s not. It’s a film of layers, of color, of silence. It’s a lighthearted socio-political commentary on the state of the world in the 60s; a commentary which is relevant to this day.
You’re watching Screen View Mirror, I’m your host Emma and this is my take on Playtime.

I think it's important to see this movie in context alongside its two predecessors in the Tati trilogy; Hulot's vacation and Mon Oncle. In the first, the old French way of life was everywhere, and Hulot was where he belonged. In the second film, Mon Oncle, the new world is in the process of creeping in and changing the traditional French ways. Its novel presence is still unfinished and silly, represented by the new clumsy 50s invensions, but those who embrace it are forced to change their way of life to conform to its unatural demands. Hulot still resists and prefers the old and simpler way of life. Fast forward a decade and Playtime shows us the modern world has now completely taken over and Hulot is lost in its massive complexity. It's always thought-provoking, often funny but also sad. The old world is gone and replaced by something that doesn't make a lot of sense.

The middle section of the video was funny just like the movie. You entered into next level of movie analysis. Nice work.

“The challenge of modernity is to live without illusions and without becoming disillusioned. I'm a pessimist because of intelligence, but an optimist because of will.”

the ceiling falling down could be interpreted this way, that American's shows the common person the "American dream"(orange), and in an attempt to get it, the common man leads the way to destruction(the ceiling falling apart). Also look at how the black artists were disturbed by the event, and also notice the ceiling decoration had black and white tiles, which got more segregated after falling down(?)
