This was a good discussion of proper mechanics. I have learned with my game that there are seasons (a month or so) where I focus particularly on mechanics, as well as seasons where I focus particularly on feel and rhythm/tempo. During the rhythm/tempo season, I watch swings like Oosthuizen and Elkington and then get on the course and focus mostly on feel, tempo and target. I just finished a feel season, and in my last round on 12/30, I shot 6 shots better in a round than I had been able to shoot while I was focused on fixing mechanics in the immediately previous season. This has been my trek as I try to regain my game following two liver transplants and the related illnesses that preceded each. I’m very thankful to be playing seriously again.

I'm going to try this again since my comment didn't appear for some reason. Hi Kevin, are you demonstrating a roll release instead of a body release? And, what is the position of the clubface when the club is parallel to the ground across the thighs on the downswing? If you are demonstrating a roll release, is rolling the arms a timing thing; that is, if one rolls too soon the clubface closes, resulting in a wicked left shot. if, rolling too late, then that results in a slice or worse?

There a lot of tips out there. Many require knowing how to swing first but i think this one is good for the beginner. The other most common thing a beginner may do is already forming the habit of standing up in the middle of the swing. I think kevins swing is also a little bit too heavy on the club head rotation which makes it harder to control especially when swinging faster.

Your 7-irons get nice distance, but it looks like your using a strong lofted club? What about your driver? What is your loft? I'm only asking to make more sense of the data as I compare my own Trackman 4 results. I don't want to feel like I'm "failing" with your concepts if I "only" hit 180 yds but it turns out my iron is more traditional (Ping i230 standard). Many thanks!!

@@kevinhwangjr Thanks, very much appreciated the clarification! Your videos made me smile as I remembered the old TGM legend Tom Tomasello's teaching in his old age. He really emphasizes a flat left wrist and throwing the club 'down and out' to first base. The way you supinate the left forearm/wrist obviously works well for you. In testing it out just swinging through the air, I'm wondering what 'mechanics' you feel protect you from "over-rotation", or too much of a closing rate of the face through impact. Or do you think the face closes AFTER the ball is gone? 🙏🏻

I coach volleyball and everyone is trying to get in this photographic high reach arm directly overhead, chest square with the net and they loose power. Same for serving they spin chest open. I have them keep it slightly closed and they are amazed by the power. Look at the 2019 pro championship best spikes of they tourney, lots of cross body shots or chest is 45 degrees to the net. Have to ply in slow motion to catch most of the shots.

I just want to point out that what your hips do in an effective golf swing (such as yours) is ENTIRELY dependant on how you take your backswing. For instance Cameron Champ who's hips are incredibly open at impact, turns the sternum towards the trail side and upward in the backswing but not to the rear and his lead shoulder and head move out towards the ball and he has a tremendous preservation of width as he lifts his arms at the top of the swing. This can be seen with longer shafted clubs especially by how high and relatively straight his cocked trail elbow is at the top. This takes tremendous flexibility. It also results in the sternum being able to stay forward during the entire swing and the hips to open up maximally through impact. Your motion is a little more like Adam Scott's where the sternum travels more towards the rear of the body and a little upward. This turn serves as a platform for a very pure cocking and uncocking of the trail arm and wrist, which in your case largely parallels the pulling back of the trail hip. Since this type of turn is a little more trail side oriented (trail side is pulled back as the trail arm and hand are cocked, like drawing a bow), in order to maintain rotational forces on the club during the downswing the lead side shoulder is pulled back as the highly recessed trail side comes forward. This results in the shoulder line pulling back a little from the address line as the club is slung through impact; something also seen in Scott's swing in many cases. However Scott maintains a lot of knee flex at address and throughout the swing with a restricted backsiwng hip turn which holds him closer to the ball and allows him to have more hip rotation through the ball than is the case in your swing. This also means that your arms tend to release a little more out towards the ball whereas Scott's stay a little closer to his torso. So it's all about symmetry, release, and turn structure. Champ's hips are very closed to very open, Scott's are less closed to more open, and yours are more closed to less open. Both you and Scott are less symmetrical than Champ because of the way you turn your shoulders and sternum in the backswing. Of all of the three variants, yours gives the most lattitude for a huge component of trail arm and trail hand release as a predominant power source. It's a very nice swing though. I would wonder about face rotation being a bit too high though for golf at the highest level but with controlled swings, would probably still work. Cheers.

@kkgg-cq3bk3 ай бұрын
I read through, didn’t understand 😢
@timothypollock83583 ай бұрын
@@kkgg-cq3bk Basically, Champ and even Mcilroy drive the lead shoulder out towards the ball as the trail shoulder goes back in the backswing so that there is more symmetry in the turn of the upper body than with Scott and Hwang Jr. This symmetry of turn keeps the sternum closer to the ball than in the other case. So functionally the whole body turns as more of a jointed column with the upper body turning in a more centered fashion over the lower. This is the best configuration to be able to have the hips open at impact because the body is already turned more symmetrically and you can just simply turn back with the sternum staying more stable relative to its distance from the ball and the hips naturally open as the knees switch places right before impact. With Scott and Hwang Jr. the trail shoulder goes back more than the lead one comes forward so the upper body motion is less symmetrically turned at the top. So to get the shoulders back close to square (really about 5 degrees open on average) by impact, the trail shoulder has to travel more forward toward the ball than the lead shoulder moves towards the rear of the body. This is less advantageous for getting the hips open at impact because the trail side side shoulder has to move forward faster while the hips are held closed for longer so that the shoulders can arrive at around 5 degress open ( the pro average ) at impact. One must get the shoulder line about 5 degrees open at impact or a solid impact with control of the ball direction becomes nearly impossible although one can change the depth of the shoulder line slightly from where it is at address but it must be farther rather than closer to the ball or things become very difficult. Scott manages to open his hips quite a bit at impact but in order to do that, he holds his knees very flexed with weight towards his toes in the backswing and restricts his hip turn quite a bit. This gives him the opportunity to accelerate the trail shoulder forward quickly while he uses the knee flex to keep his hips from opening too early in the downswing. He is also pulling the lead shoulder back, at the same time, so that the shoulder line (you can check it yourself) ends up and inch or two back for its address line at impact, which does not happen with Champ and Mcilroy who keep the same shoulder line distance from the ball. Hwang doesn't have very open hips at impact because unlike Scott he doesn't have extreme knee flex with weight towards the ball (over his toe line) and moves his trail shoulder back as well relative to the ballward motion of the lead shoulder and he pulls his trail hip back quite far instead of restricting it so (important) the trail shoulder and the trail hip move back together in the backswing (full body trail side windup). Therefore in order to have time to get the trail shoulder forward enough for a solid impact, he has to restrict his hip turn (hold the hips closed relative to the upper body) quite a bit through impact and also let the lead shoulder come away from the ball a little faster (both shoulders are then contributing to squaring the shoulder line) so that, just like Scott, his shoulder line ends up farther from the ball than at address. Because Hwang is firing his trail shoulder forward ( toward the ball ) while his very closed hips open rapidly in the early downswing, the trail arm and hand which are coming forward with the retracted trail shoulder and hip are releasing over a longer distance than Scott's and releasing a greater amplitude of angles during that release. This means that he has a more unrestricted throwing motion of the trail arm which is good for easy power but which could contribute to more face rotation and need for precise timing through impact. However his trail arm becomes a source of easy power by doing that because the trail arm (and hand ) has the most levers per unit area of the body to release in the golf swing and is therefore the biggest source of leverage and potential power. If this doesn't help you understand, I guess that I am unable to help in that regard. Cheers.
