Harmless, dude. Many people swim with them in the canals with their kids. It's the equivalent of swimming with dolphins.

MikesMethods Swimming with them is one thing... accidentally spooking them is another. You'll never see a manatee being attacked by a big bull shark. lol. They are awesome creatures, but do not underestimate their power and speed. The same can be said about a playful dolphin at night sneaking up on you and wanting to play around with your hull. (That time I almost clogged my scupper holes with organic material made by yours truly. )

My son (10) and I take our yaks out and see them evertime. Its great for him to see them learn to appreciate it. I had one watch me unhook a trout from the time I brought it to the yak til it swam away we looked at each other and she blew a little water from her snout at me and cruised away

This happened to a buddy of mine. He accidentally kayaked over a sleeping manatee and it surged into the air, lifting him and his entire 'yak into the air, then it shot off like a rocket. It was awesome but he was scared shitless at the time.

Congrats and they make a nice set of outriggers also. I use a sail so the outriggers are a must if you go that route. Enjoy brother.

I had an almost identical experience my first time out at EG Simmons...except I wasn't fishing, and I didn't see the manatees before they got spooked. I swear I heard Liam Neeson's voice say "Release the Kracken!" My wife and I still debate on whether the noise I made as the water frothed and foamed was a squawk of surprise, or a squeal of a girl :P

Nothing as close, definitely, but when a gator splashes it definitely makes the adrenaline course through the body too.

I was out a couple weeks ago in my pro angler... I must of went over top of one and didn't realize it. It lifted the back of the kayak up, and as I turned my head I caught a glimpse of this huge tail smack the side of my kayak, hard! I was soaking wet. Luckily I didn't flip over, and it did scare the living crap outta me.

hey +zoffinger there was manatees at the end of my canal umm making a mini manatee if you get that and it was like that all day for weeks and you couldn't go on the dock without hearing a booming splash not even 50 feet away, but it made for a very cool experience. also when the third one finally came to be the mom/dad (I don't know which) seemed to be training the baby to hold its breath because it would stay face down in the water with the mom for a while and then swim down or come up for air, well my neighbors didn't know what was going on so they got in a kayak went up to it and got a huge splash when the mom got spooked (I knew from experience not to do that)

That's awesome. I've had several instances where manatees came up and tossed me from the yak. Once I was at big Island on the St Pete side of 275 and I got lifted from the bow of the boat and my 16ft beast of a yak with me in it at 320lbs and next thing I know I am looking straight down at the water as the boat was tipped upwards. It was before the days of gopro's but I did have witnesses. I think manatees see me as an albino alpha trying to take over their area. lol
