As a Londoner who doesn't really get on with Travelling, one of the things I adored during the old GP era was that there was consistently 2 massive events in the UK every year. Exactly which cities did vary, so it wasn't always London, but it meant that I could reasonably go to a major event every year without needing to worry about travel, accommodation, etc. to anywhere near the same degree. Yes, not everyone could have that, but having a large number of these premier level events all over the globe meant that most people had one that was a level of local to them. Then they just stopped doing GPs and in this era, with only 3 Magic Cons per year, I basically don't bother paying attention, because the odds of me getting one where I could go without travelling exceptional distances is basically non-existent. I appreciate that particularly the Pandemic forced them to scale things back, but I feel that Wizards have lost sight of the fact that a huge part of the draw of the old GPs was that it was a premier level event that was _local_.

I started playing magic in 1993, won a bunch of state/regional champs, qualified for several pro tours, made my national team. I live in Australia. I haven't seriously played magic basically since 2018 when Nats was eliminated and basically all other competitive events disappeared here. They're just starting to come back now, but there's still no big events IN Australia. I imagine I must be one of the more ingrained dedicated players and I am not playing magic. It's a real shame.

Vegas is the closest to me (and I live in the third / fourth largest city, Houston), and going to one of these conventions is basically a luxury vacation that you can only take once every three or five years. to have an event like that in Prague would be nice, and perhaps even easy on the money and travel for wizards and the rest of the Europe, allegedly conventions here are rather cheap to rent and contract. Community-wise it would also be nice for the European mainlanders, as they could just take a bus, a train or a cheap flight and the city itself isn't very expensive compared to a city like Vegas or London.

My favourite Magic event memory of all time involves an artist. GP Vancouver a few years back, I was working the prize counter, helping set up on the Friday night. A guy comes over and asks if he can give us something to put on the prize wall. We were a little confused, but then he introduced himself. It was Eric Deschamps and he wanted to give us the original sketches for Fatal Push. He told us a little story about how he developed the final picture and then signed our copies of Push (it was in Standard at the time). I feel really bad that a sizable amount of players will never have little interactions like that anymore.

Even as a Canadian that’s an extra 300 minimum for an international flight to the states, not counting lodging, food, and transportation, which is all in American dollar, so everything looks cheap in price, but the actual conversion of our money means it took quite a bit more of my cash to pay for anything. As a young person, kinda a tough order to be able to book time off a job for this, drop 1000 on outside expenditures, plus however much it is to attend (badges are sold out so the page won’t even tell you rn) I spent less going to the renfaire a notoriously expensive time. I just spent less coming to Nola for my mom’s wedding. Las Vegas is notoriously expensive as hell, Chicago and Atlanta not so much. But much further from me up north.

I hope they never, EVER, have a magic con in Dublin. You'd need to remortgage your parent's house just to get a bus into that city. Have it in Belfast, great travel hub, plenty of hotel/overnight stay options and isnt as expensive as the rest of the island.

Amsterdam was way too good for them to not do another one in Europe. Was looking forward to doing a full weekend next year so fingers crossed 🤞🏻

I also believe it is an expensive city for an event of the scale of a MagicCon, but one in Vienna would be dope.

0:25 Something is really off with your projections, mate. You've accidentally annexed most of the southern border of Canada. As a cartographer, I think you mixed up your projections when superimposing the map and the mask for the flag.

@Bubben246 That's a weird metric to use. if that's the biggest gripe you have to talk aboot, then obviously Canada is pretty great.

Atlanta and Chicago are the two busiest/most central airports in the US. That likely explains that choice.

The real kicker as a Canadian is that it probably costs as much if not more for us to visit the US as it does were we to travel to Asia, Europe, etc... Also with my personal schedule these announcements are pretty late. I need to do all my 2025 vacation picks in the next month. As it stands i only know of the magic con schedule and a few of the spotlight series, and by the time the schedule for the others comes out it will be too late for me.

A flight to America costs as much as a flight to Central Europe?
@TemjinZero
@TemjinZero Ай бұрын
@@PleasantKenobi at some points in time it can. Mostly conversions to currency are the sore points. CAD vs USD or Euro are pretty similar right now, so yes US trips are cheaper to fly to, but accommodations can be more pricey in the US. Flying to Japan for example is a more expensive flight ticket, but since the currency conversion is so much gentler to CAD, the rest of the trip is a little more... 'Affordable'.
