As a Londoner who doesn't really get on with Travelling, one of the things I adored during the old GP era was that there was consistently 2 massive events in the UK every year. Exactly which cities did vary, so it wasn't always London, but it meant that I could reasonably go to a major event every year without needing to worry about travel, accommodation, etc. to anywhere near the same degree. Yes, not everyone could have that, but having a large number of these premier level events all over the globe meant that most people had one that was a level of local to them. Then they just stopped doing GPs and in this era, with only 3 Magic Cons per year, I basically don't bother paying attention, because the odds of me getting one where I could go without travelling exceptional distances is basically non-existent. I appreciate that particularly the Pandemic forced them to scale things back, but I feel that Wizards have lost sight of the fact that a huge part of the draw of the old GPs was that it was a premier level event that was _local_.

My favourite Magic event memory of all time involves an artist. GP Vancouver a few years back, I was working the prize counter, helping set up on the Friday night. A guy comes over and asks if he can give us something to put on the prize wall. We were a little confused, but then he introduced himself. It was Eric Deschamps and he wanted to give us the original sketches for Fatal Push. He told us a little story about how he developed the final picture and then signed our copies of Push (it was in Standard at the time). Even as a Canadian that’s an extra 300 minimum for an international flight to the states, not counting lodging, food, and transportation, which is all in American dollar, so everything looks cheap in price, but the actual conversion of our money means it took quite a bit more of my cash to pay for anything. As a young person, kinda a tough order to be able to book time off a job for this, drop 1000 on outside expenditures, plus however much it is to attend (badges are sold out so the page won’t even tell you rn) I spent less going to the renfaire a notoriously expensive time.
