We go to Vegas 2 or 3 times a year and always stay at the PLAZA. I’m not a gambler but my husband loves to play craps, the table minimum is reasonable and their table staff are always friendly and upbeat. The pool is great and the proximity to Fremont Street is awesome! We always have at least one meal at Oscars(the best steak!) and Hash House a go go, YUM!! Lastly, Vegas’ best sports book is right across the street at Circa with a huge screen showing every game imaginable! I will say though, that you’re likely to encounter some homeless beggars and a contact high just walking around. So parents beware, it’s not a place for children.

We used to cruise Fremont Street on Friday and Saturday nights back in the 70s when we were in high school. The East Fremont District back in the 50s and 60s is where the department stores and shopping were. I remember seeing Atomic Liquor when I was a kid and we would go shopping. I completely agree on ALL of your points Aly. Especially the Mike Hammer show at the 4 Queens - my friends and I saw his show this past May and it was easily one of the highlights of my trip. He is very skilled, incredibly funny and involves the audience in the act. I HIGHLY recommend seeing him. I will return for sure, probably not my upcoming trip in a few weeks - but definitely on another occasion.

Downtown is fun. I think what a lot of folks don’t realize is that despite how it appears on the map, the strip takes a LOT of walking which is killer in the summer. I’ve been to Vegas dozens of times and can attest that the machines downtown pay more often than on the strip so you can last a little longer haha!

Me and my wife went twice. When we went in 2022, we absolutely loved it. My wife even won 127 bucks on her 2nd spin at Golden Nugget! I got stuck on the zipline and I thought it was fun! lol We went this year and I think the later it got, the less we enjoyed it (coupled with guards yelling at us not to go inside Golden Nugget, but we went in from the other side to use the restroom and then Lyft back to Mandalay Bay). It was a good time, but then again, it was day 6 of our Vegas trip lol I was getting burnt out.

The mechanical horse betting game is my favorite betting machine. This had been around for at least 35 years if not more. I used to go Las Vegas as a package deal back in 1989-1991 when the Fremont Experience wasn't. The charter was at Howard Hughes Airport at the time as opposed to the current airport. I laughed so hard when I managed to hit the long shot of 400 to 1 every so often on one quarter. I could not bet on the next round because it was still dispensing quarters out of the machine! 🤣 It was hilarious to take my quarters and put it in the plastic containers and wait a few minutes lining up to the cashier cage knowing that I won more than I lost. I really didn't mind getting my hands dirty from the quarters. Great memories! To know that downtown Las Vegas still have the old fashioned coin operated gambling devices is making me want to go back there and have at it at the D Casino. Thank you for pointing this out as this made my day! 😁

I agree with you, we always stay downtown! Main St Station is our home away from home (we go to Vegas at least 3 or 4 times a year, sometimes more, for many years now). They refurbished their rooms recently, Triple 7 Brewery is great for beer & food, and the buffet is good too. Awesome friendly staff, many of whom have become our friends. Their casino is smaller, not as many machines, but way less crowded and smoky which we like. We like going to Circa to eat & play, Andiamo at The D is awesome, also like Triple George and Hugo’s Cellar. Fremont St can get a little nuts at times but is always interesting! Love that they have really cleaned up the area down near El Cortez and the Container Park and Main St and Stewart as well. There are not nearly as many homeless people as there used to be. So it feels much safer to me. Of course you always have to be smart and aware of your surroundings no matter what. And it is definitely less expensive downtown than on the strip! You will never catch us on the strip unless we are going to a show or concert there, which we tend to avoid.

First off, I agree that it is much better and more fun and less expensive to stay downtown. And second, your video makes me a little sad and longing for past days. My first trip to LV was in the late 70's. It was a 21st birthday present from my mother. She even paid for my best friend to travel with me. Our hotel was the Golden Nugget and we loved it. There was no Fremont Experience back then and we loved how you could even go diagonally at the walk lights. I know, small things, but being from a 200 person town, small things become bigger. And those neon signs you pointed out were on actual places back then. Glitter Gulch was an actual casino, not a strip club as it would become years later and then even a symbol of downtown. And Vegas Vic? I gambled many times in the Pioneer. And I still wake up sometimes with the jingle from Sassy Sally's in my head. It's Double double double double double double double double, double jackpot time! You could play 50 cent live blackjack at one of the casinos and $1 was everywhere. The Plaza was there, but called Union Plaza and it has not changed a lot over the years. My favorite memory of there was the .49 breakfast special (2 eggs, 2 bacon or sausage, hash browns, 2 pieces of toast and coffee). I was a growing boy, so I ordered 2 most days lol. I even lived in East Las Vegas in the mid 80's. I remember driving downtown and parking outside the door at the news shop at the Horseshoe. Sportsbooks were mostly stand alone places back then. Anyone else remember a cigar smoke filled joint just across a side street from Golden Nugget called LeRoy's? My friend was nervous as hell there, but I loved it. Yes, I still love staying downtown every trip, but memories abound from The Mint to Golden Goose to Lady Luck to Sundance to Gold Spike to Orbit Inn to Las Vegas Club. Ok, time to walk down to El Cortez and get lost in memories. Nice video, 😎

Your point about summer heat and less walking is arguable. The sheer heat given off by that roof is enormous, on top of the ambient heat from the day being hot. Also, does the air move around well enough ? Plus the body heat from the crowd. Unless maybe the lighting tech today is far cooler than from when I was there, heat from the displays is huge. Has it changed ?

Since the mid-2010s, Fremont Street has been the much better value for Vegas travelers. Plus, it's actually in the city of Las Vegas! I think the turn around began when Derek Stevens and his brother bought the Golden Gate and Fitzgeralds (The D). That forced al the other hotels, especially The Plaza, to up their games. It is such a great place to visit now. Don't forget the Art District, too! I would say Evel Pie and the Atomic Cafe are must-sees. It would be really cool if those few old motels on the far end of Fremont could find some investors and renovate into new spaces like Fergusons. Great video!

This is a good mini run down. I haven't stayed on the strip since 2010 (with one exception, work paid convention) because of all the reasons you mentioned. When i started going to vegas in 2004, anything off canopy was pretty scary. Even the walk down to the El Co was sketch. I used to take a taxi to Atomic Liquors and the Western hotel (LV's last sawdust joint!) just to avoid the blocks that are now great shopping/drinking spots. But, as great as things are now, i worry that prices are going to get to strip levels soon. Two places that hold a great place in my heart (but are shells of thier former selves) are the Downtown Grand (recently gutted gaming rules with new gaming managers) and the beautiful Main Street Station, which hasn't been the same since the pandemic.

great review Aly, i too really enjoy the vibes of Fremont Street. the outdoor bands are great, TMB, Garage Boys, Alter Ego and Spandex Nation I like the best :). I have stayed at many of the hotels down there with El Cortez being my most stayed at place. What I don't like and I find to be a complete bad joke is the 'resort fees' these places charge still. While the room is listed as 30.00 a night or less, the resort fee is usually more than that and where a place like the Plaza has the nice pool a place like El Cortez doesn't have anything other than a less than impressive weight room :/. Aside from the resort fee gouging, I really enjoy downtown on Fremont and it is the only place I stay in Vegas. great place to see entertainment and interesting people as well :).

Fremont is to ghetto for me,a 70 year old topless woman begging for money for example. I spent 7 hours playing crabs at several different casinos and was cheated 3 times, and the ghetto charges for parking. The culinary Union threatens violence and has a stranglehold on the casinos, causing much higher costs to the casino, and has to pass that cost on to you the visitor

We visit Vegas from Ireland roughly every 18 months & have stayed last twice on Fremont st 8nts in Plaza last time & 8 nts in Four queens the time before but i like to bet the horse racing & last time in Plaza even though they advertise a sportsbook they don`t take horse bets or show the racing so qlthough a decent hotel i won`t be back in it. The Four Queens is directly opposite the Fremont hotel & it was handy for the horse racing. Also fremont st gets very busy at night so no place for kids but having a drink is a lot cheaper downtown Some good offers & you can sit & people watch if you want. But plenty of places to eat & drink.

I go to the WSOP every year but this year I did notice how expensive to strip was. $38 for a dry chicken Caesar salad from Guy Fieri through the Caesar's app why they charge $3 dollars for picking it up myself at the restaurant? I took my brother to Gordon Ramsey's steakhouse and used my $100 celebration coupon from Diamond status but it wasn't even enough for tips. The bill came up to $650! Burger shake and fries at Bobby Flay's was $34 dollars. Can we just get rid of the celebrity chefs. I don't like to walk outside in the blistering heat and usually stay at Paris where the tournaments are at.

I stayed at Four Queens back in August. My room was literally behind the Fremont Experience Stage. It was hard to sleep at night but the noise died down after three. I will stay there again as the Four Queens doesn't have a resort fee.

That only happens to newbies. Ask for the highest floors no matter where you stay, especially at the taller hotels like GN, Circa, and Plaza (but don’t go to Plaza).

Thanks for sharing the great information about downtown Fremont Street. 👍 I really enjoyed your video but I must confess, after seeing the title, I came with intentions of disputing your comment to not come to Fremont Street. 😄 My favorite Hotel and casino is the El Cortez. I will actually be there at the end of this month. Thanks for sharing! 👍

Newsflash! It's already too crowded and too expensive although still much better than the strip. I've been staying down there 95% of my visits over the last 40 years (before it was the trendy thing to do) and I'm here to tell you, it was at its peak in the late 90's through 2010ish. Now it's a complete zoo most of the time. The gambling odds have gotten way worse and now match those of the strip. I still go 2 to 3 times a year and unless we are with first timers, we stay downtown because of the excellent free live music, the potent but relatively low-priced drinks and the party atmosphere BUT make no mistake, the word has been out for a while.

It's super ghetto on the street. There was a stabbing this summer. A lot of local hoodlums mixing with tourists.

I've got to spend more time down there. I usually only for a day or two, and spend 2-3 hours. I need all day to get off of Fremont and explore.

I go to Las Vegas at least 3 times a year. I stay on The Strip because I get my room comped, but I party on Fremont Street

Well done video. But to be honest, Las Vegas has gotten way too expensive, use to go every couple of years, but now drinks over $10, food is outrageous, and shows are just crazy priced. Would love to go and see the Sphere, but once again, put the price way up because they know people will pay it. And the ones on a budget can't go. Yes, I understand and just won't be going there anymore.

Love Fremont Street, even if you can only visit for just one day. Binion's I would add to the list. Binion's Steakhouse on the 24th floor has great views of the Las Vega strip to the south. The steakhouse is old school and the food is very good. The porterhouse steak is large enough to share. Great for two!

On my next trip to Vegas I will definitely stay downtown. I'm kinda tired of the Strip. Mainly because I like table games and the minimums on the Strip are too high.

I miss cruising Fremont St. Hang a right at main. Head down to the Blue Onion, Grab a great burger. And fries. Back onto Fremont. West to the Union Pacific station. Cruise through, then back east again. Rinse and repeat 😂😂😂

I hate Fremont Street. I was felt up by two ladies wearing thongs and holding whips. People were way too drunk. I honestly didn’t feel safe and it’s dirty and old. Strictly the Strip for me.
