This game is bringing back memories of stories from Swedish folklore my grandma used to tell me. The Swedish songs are ones I know as well. The guys with the red pointy hats are called “tomte”(s) or “nisse”(s) and the big trolls are called the same, “troll”. Trolls will eat anything they can get their hands on, from forest ani Al’s to tomtes to little human children, they don’t eat the adults though. They hide from the sun because the light will turn them to stone because they’re full of evil.

26:47 Fun fact: One of the most famous artists who ever lived in sweden, John Bauer. Who specialised in painting swedish mythology, made a painting almost identical to this scene. Its called "Tuvstarr" and depicts a glowing naked girl with long hair sitting by a pond. Its one of his most famous paintings and it probably inspired the scene!

5:15 trolls are “allergic” kinda to the sun. So trolls only go outside at night so they won’t be turned to stone. For example in the hobbit we see Gandalf turning the trolls who captured bilbo and his gang in to stone by exposing them to sunlight.

Hey daz!💕I'm from Norway and I can tell you that the trolls turn to stone from sunlight. The kind of song Ole's sister sings is called "kulning" in Swedish or "lokk" in Norwegian. The instrument nøkken the witch in the swamp plays is called the harding fiddle «hardingfele» and is associated with magic and enchantment. The most famous song that nøkken plays to lure people is the tune called "Fanitullen" hope you see this comment. Love your videos❤️ greetings from Norway🇳🇴❤️

As a German who's thoroughly studied Nordic and Germanic folktales alike, this hits on a whole deeper level. To think some of this is actually in our culture and heritage is shocking. I enjoy writing stories about Nøkken, Zwerg, etc etc, but this is amazing! If anyone wonders what the runes were saying in the book, it was just what the woman was saying, only in runes. The language was English though and not swedish
@Luminoxie Жыл бұрын
As someone who adores German folktales are there any you recommend for me to check out? I absolutely adore the tale of the nøkken and haven't heard of the zwerg before.
@Jürgen_von_Schumacher Жыл бұрын
@@Luminoxie Well, I don't know many German folktales of Pagan origin (Unlike our Northern Brothers, we were christianized much more quickly and broke away from that part of our history much more quickly than them.) But for our own folktales, my first recommendation must be the Brothers Grimm. It tells our old stories in the purest way. If you speak German, I'd recommend finding a German version first, but of you don't, the English translation is just as great! You could also study medieval German literature. It's not quite folklore but it's still incredible and quite beautiful. My favorite genre would be Minnesang which were love songs made by courtiers and nobility. However one Minnesänger, Walther, made a poem about his trip to Jerusalem in the crusades. The Kaiser was so moved by his story that he gave him a castle and lordship with land 🙃 Outside of that, your best chance would just be to come to Germany and listen to our folktales in person as they thrive during our regional holidays A Zwerg is a dwarf essentially but we don't have much tales of him outside of him looking after our Kaiser Barbossa in the Unterburg, who is rumored to rise again and save his Kaiserreich and people when we're in our greatest need. I'd say he's a bit late 😂😂😂

I so love the Nathan violin witch character. The effort to put in that story which was in itself based on the real life dancing plagues (yes, plagues as in plural, happened more than once. Several times, in fact) where people would just dance until feet were bloody and several died from exhaustion because they would not-could not-stop. Hit several places throughout Europe with no connection anyone has ever been able to determine. No cause has ever been found for it either so it is nicely creepy and perfect to put into the folklore of this game.

ok so fun facts about the characters in the game if anyone is curious 1. the orange berries that the small people are wearing as hats are called Hjortron in Swedish (i think they are called cloudberries in English) 2. the extremely small characters with red pointy hats are skogstomtar or in English the best translation i have is regular gnomes, like garden gnomes but wild i guess, the design is very similar to santa claus as you call him in English but in Sweden we call father chirstmas "tomten". As in THE gnome, kinda. They are like friendly guardian spirits. 3. the trolls in the story turn into stone by sunlight according to nordic mythology, that's why they are only active at night (don't know about the helpful troll though since he is already made of stone) 4. Näcken, his background was basically explained in the game, but the reason i got chills as soon as i heard the violin was because in the tale i've been told growing up is that he lures in children specifically with his song and then drowns them (That was the depiction on the cave wall as well). 5. as for Tuva, I suspect that she might be a Gruvrå or a skogsrå, which according to google translate is a "mine raw or a forest raw???" but i'm not sure about that one. EDIT: spelling

This is such an amazing game... the story is captivating, the puzzles so unique & challenging, and in amongst it all is a hero that you are genuinely rooting for and care about getting through safely. There is such heart in the midst of the horror that makes this just one hell of a game. As Daz said this should be a film too... it is just so epic in nature without feeling souless or just a formulaic rehash of all that have gone before. I can't wait for part three!! He was back in the day often used to scare children into not walking to close to the water. It's cool that they used proto germanic runes in the book 43:18, too bad it's translated letter by letter in english, and not in swedish. The part "Listen to the voices", the voices part is translated very oddly. The rune for 'ᚢ' is called 'Uruz', it's used for the 'U' sound. The 'ᚲ', while looking like a C, is called Kauna (or Kenaz depending on where you look) and it's the sound for 'K'. So, in the game it's been translated to ' *ᚢᛟᛁᚲᛖᛊ* ', wich would be 'UOIKES'. Since the 'C' in 'voices' is more akin to an 'S' sound, they could've used 'ᛊ', and you could use 'ᚹ', which is the rune for Wunjo, for both w or v. So it would look more like this ' *ᚹᛟᛁᛊᛖᛊ* '
