What if all the things happened was a dream...what if it is only in Mammootty's head? The movie's name itself 'afternoon nap'

Lijo's movies usually are open ended, Each person watching the movie will come out with a different theory. It surely stays with one for a few days after you have watched it. Also there are so many hints in different frames that will support the theory you have. Theory 1 : Ghost entered the body for a day, and left him after all the final rites were done. Because the person in the village whose ghost it was went missing and was never found, so the family members had never done a kriya karm for him. Theory 2 : Ghost entered the body and never left him. He was just acting in the end, as if everything was fine, because the Ghost had realised it was in a different body, and no one recognises him in this village. Hint to support : The dog runs behind the bus at the end. Theory 3 : The entire bus was a group of Theatre people, who did a play in the village and then left. All the people were acting. Hint : The name of the bus (forget the name but references a theatre group), and also maybe mamooty enacting a scene of shivaji ganeshan at the bar. Hope you had fun reading through. 🙂

My first impression was that the whole ‘Sundaram thing’ was just a dream Mamooty was having in the bus, because in the final shots they show the bus in the same idle position with all the passengers sleeping as they had shown earlier in the movie. And as the bus moves, from the writing on the bus it is shown that it is a drama company’s bus, meaning James is an actor or manager of a drama troupe & other passengers might be drama artists as well, & while earlier in the first half when they are travelling, the movie scene running in the bus is showing a scene about a lost son that goes back to his family, that’s the final scenes Mathew see before doozing off, so it’s likely he might have dreamt a similar situation. But now after repeated watch i am also convinced that it is not a dream. Mammoty did indeed go to the village possessed as Sundaram. So just a back story of Sundaram, it is said multiple times he went missing and is presumably dead. His body was never found, thus his family was never able to give a ritualistic burial & final rites. In Indic belief any souls suffering unnatural deaths, not offered a proper burial shall remain cursed & can only attain Moksha if a ‘ritualistic rice offering’ is offered by their children and dead visit them as Crows at the time. That’s exactly is what’s happening towards climax & if you watch closely you can see Sundarams shadow does not follow him as he exit the main doorway of the house. So he exits through the main door and sleeps outside, thus waking up from his slumber
Taniyaa, LJP movies always have open ending for every audience to make the movie their own version in their head, but this movie he has used a lot of Tamil meta-references with that in mind, I would suggest you to watch the movie review by Baradwaj Rangan from Galatta Plus he has also not given a verdict on the movie but have broken down the meta references and character traits for audiences to make the version for themself.. What i did was i watched his review and re-watched the movie keeping the pointers in mind and it made a whole lot sense to me but only to end with lesser question than before not a closure.

The movie is open for multiple interpretations like any other LJP film. There is spiritual message as well, as there is analogy of Death and Rebirth, Death is like sleep and we wake up as different person in new birth. The whole story could even be dream as the old lady was watching old Tamil movie and before he went on to sleep, same Tamil movie was playing in the bus as well. other interpretation like Split personality etc can also be made.

☠️Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam was inspired by a "Greenply" advertisement. In the comedic ad, a Sikh boy suddenly starts speaking in Tamil. The ad is centred around the theme of reincarnation. Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam’s ending is as ambiguous and open to interpretation as possible. That final scene showing James as the only person awake on the bus implies that the events in the Tamil Nadu village were just part of the protagonist’s dream, which would also be in line with the film’s translated title, Like An Afternoon Dream. If it were a dream, however, we would see the film play out solely from James’s perspective. Instead, we have multiple scenes centered on James’s family and friends interacting with Sundaram’s family that the protagonist couldn’t have possibly overheard. And Sundaram’s dog following the bus further implies that the missing man’s ghost possessed James while he was asleep on the bus and left his body while he was napping the following afternoon.

Its all about reading between the lines. The story is not the story, the subtext is the story. The visuals are just there to give you an abstract context. Everything is a metaphor and every scene is there for a reason. Abstract concepts like life, death, rebirth and the concept of oneness.

It has many interpretations to it. It can be a dream or it can be a drama since they are drama artists as the name of the play is shown at the end on the top of the bus - a drama with in drama. But the essence is though we are of different cultures and languages (as 2 characters in the movie) there are things and connections that tie us living creatures together - like grief, love, relations, society etc. A dog running behind the bus at the end is a clue to it. Another one is message from the Thirukkural in the beginning where it says sleep is like a death and rebirth. So it can be a dream of rebirth as a Tamilian by a Malayali. A one more watch would definitely be more rewarding This movie was inspired from an old advertisement of Feviquick where a sardar kid transform into a Tamil uncle and gets into Tamil household. You must watch more of LJP movies to get hang of his style of movie making.

Everyone get their own theory. Thats nanpakal nerathu mayakkam. Actually this story inspired from an old hindi plywood advertisement. Its not a dream by the way. They didnt established any dream movement in the movie.

Nobody noticed the constant background songs and film dialogues going on the radios and tv in Tamil ? Would have enjoyed more if one could understood the language.

Correction- Movie is not about any theatre groups. They are a group of Kerala Christian families returning from a pilgrimage to Velankani church, which is in neighbouring state Tamil Nadu.

it is also about theatre group.. which makes a chance for protagonist to be stuck in a character which he played in his previous theater drama..

Lijo jose pelissery's movies are very complex but well made . Even most malayalis have very less clue .Just enjoy the movie for the visuals and the story line . Maybe u can get a clue from the interviews he may have given to film companion or some such or reviews of the movie . From people who have understood the movie better . He usually leaves open endings and its upto the viewer to take home what is their take on it . But u should watch jalikettu .More understandable. And also e.mau .yu . Very good movie .Amen also good .
