Bill & Frank are a character study that gives commentary about Joel. In the game it shows a bitter Bill as a warning to who Joel could become if he stays closed off and never trusts anyone. In the show, it teases the type of life Joel could have if he learns to let people in again and trust. Understanding Bill and Frank is a lesson on understanding Joel.

Episode 3 is the thesis statement for the entire show. Surviving just isn't enough. I also liked the change because Joel has a cautionary tale in his and tess's relationship. He closed himself off and now she is gone, and he has all that regret. The change took another cautionary tale and made it an inspiring tale. Joel sees what happens when he doesn't let himself love, now we show him what happens if he does let himself love.

It’s interesting to me that they gave Joel the same impetus to become a better from two different stories. In the game Bill teaches Joel this by Joel seeing how sad and alone he is, angry as well. So he sort of starts to change from that point to not end up like Bill. Whereas in the show he is directly told by Bill albeit in a letter that they’ve both got missions, something to keep them fighting for, it was of course Tess initially, but it’s now transferred to Ellie.

I get people complaining about episode 3 but it’s also kinda annoying. It was a beautiful story that was wonderful to see. The Craig Mazin mentioned that they chose to leave out a ton of action/infected and stuff so that we feel the weight of death and consequences when it happens. It’s easy to become numb to the action when you get so much of it. Also, I loved episode 4 so much. Finally get to see the chemistry between Joel and Ellie and how well it’s portrayed by Pedro and Bella. Lastly, please be safe while overseas. We will miss you!

It is so awesome seeing someone who ACTUALLY has deep knowledge of the games watching this. I've watched a bunch of reactors who have claimed to have played the games, and other than a couple of them, nearly all of them missed the major beats from the games that have appeared in the show. It's so cool seeing someone else get as excited as I was about both the new things, and the old things from the games that are in this show. The performances by both Bella and Pedro are just incredible, and the ensemble cast around them is phenomenal. I love your reactions, and have really enjoyed your playthroughs. On a more serious note, I hope your deployment goes well. Don't know what branch you're in, or what your MOS is, but I was in the Army as a combat medic many years ago and was in the middle of a 14 month deployment 15 years ago around this time, so I can empathize with being away from home and the suck that comes with all of that. I hope you're going somewhere chill.

Overall it was like 75% straight outta the game

I love the fact that the HBO series is somewhat different than the game. It wouldn't be as fun and exciting if it was exactly like the game. Honestly, if I had my wish, I'd take bits and pieces out of this HBO series and combine it with the game to make it perfect. I hope you enjoyed part 2 and really loved this series as you watched it. As many i was so skeptical when the series was announced and i still wasn’t convinced until this episode, but man…the end of this episode with Joel finally giving in and giggling like a little girl together with Ellie sealed the deal for me. Made me feel the same things the game did all these years ago. My favourite scene in the entire series, absolutely adore it! Also safe travels while working and we can’t wait to have you back! :)

To add to what you said regarding episode 3; as someone who is a big fan of the games, I can appreciate why some people might think it was lacking in action, but really, if it was filled with fights and setting off traps, we would just be observing something that, as game players, we had previously "done" as Joel. Would the action be as effective when we are not directly controlling it? I'm not sure it would be. After saying that, ep. 3 was the most beautiful love story I can ever remember seeing! It will stay with me for a "Long, long time".

Good to hear that you've through Part 2. I know me and quite a few others recommended & bugged you about this before. Most references are in a certain episode but there's some here and there that you might pick up on too. I'll try to point them out when they happen. But I also believe that the experience for the show in general is much better after knowing Part 2 and that entire journey of what you go through there with all its characters, because it just adds so much more meaning and weight onto Part 1 and a lot of those things that are happening there. I guess so far the only really noteworthy one might have been that dead guy in the first episode that was sprouting out along the wall. We know this could not be as "done", as Joel put it, as we thought to believe, after playing through "that other part" of Part 2 in a certain building. In this episode Ellie refers to coffee smell as "burnt shit", which is actually a quote from Dina in the little open world section when you enter that little store. And no. Ellie didn't shoot Brian in the hand, but the lower back. She paralyzed him. He was just touching his back with his hand which made it bloody.

Seeing as how it seems like you've already seen the whole show at this point, it's probably safe to say that there are absolutely no late-game spoilers for TLoU2. There are, like, 2 nods to TLoU2 in the episode where they reach Tommy, and Laura Bailey (Abby, plus a handful of incidental characters in the first game) has a cameo as a nurse. All that being said, I honestly love how they translated the game to a TV-series setting, and like you said, the whole "they focused too much on side characters" argument is utter bullshit. The side characters ALL demonstrate the power and possibility in love. Every single one of them was doing what they were doing from some point of love. Whether it's Bill finding love with Frank and how that altered the course of his existence, helping him actually live, Joel initially carrying on with the mission of getting Ellie to the Fireflies out of whatever love he had for Tess, Kathleen doing what she did out of love for her murdered brother, young people finding their first love...it's ALL love. Oh, and fucking Bryan in this episode - the kid begging for his life - broke my heart. Yes, he got what he 'deserved' for trying to kill Joel because, in a situation like this, it's kill or be killed, but he's still really just a kid and shouldn't have been there in the first place. Poor guy had no REAL understanding of what he was doing. Juan Magana did a fantastic job of portraying that panic and terror.

That bit with the kid begging for his life, that CAN actually happen during the city chapter in the game with any of the random npcs you fight. its not scripted and can happen completely at random at any point in that chapter or not at all so if you see it just takes you by surprise and on repeat playthroughs you might expect it to show up in the same place and it just doesn't or shows up somewhere else at random. For me, it happened in one of the apartment buildings with one of the last men standing who i had shot in the gut. he begged and, realizing the dude was probably a goner anyway i shot him in the head, thematically its a nice poetic foreshadow to the ending

I could feel her acting at times... It was touching... Maybe am old n soft but no buying that... Was just class acting...
