We live in a timeline spoiled for choice with incredible new IPs with inspired mechanics. It's the safest/best route for new game devs to take. But if you've decided to take the risk of making a fan game & I can't convince you otherwise: Learn from cancelled fangames of the past. Making fan games instead of original ones is bad idea, but advertising that you are doing so is a worse idea.

6 years later and this video is still relevant. Zelda Link's Awakening got an unofficial PC port that adds so many cool new features. And less than a week after it was released The Big N gave it that CND. Thankfully the developer got the message and he made sure to SHUT THE FUCK UP! It seems like the developer didn't tell a soul. Made a new account on itchio, uploaded this fan game and dipped never to be heard from again. The project was 100% completed with the source code and everything released. So any downloads of this project that are bound to popup in the future will have this game in a fully completed state.

Cease and desist isn't the worst thing the publishers can do to you for unauthorized use of their IP. It's a relative mild consequence for fan game creators considering. If you plan on making a fangame you better make sure that no one knows that it's you who made it if you don't want to pay off legal fees and settlements for the rest of your life.

what's really tragic is that Fighting is Magic literally got approval from Hasbro. The creator of the show, Lauren Faust, helped work on the project. And it STILL got C&D'ed

They're the only reason I funded Skullgirls, and they made giving Mane6 access to the Skullgirls engine the absolute highest of their funding stretch goals, which was a move that's just seemed more and more scummy the more years I've had to think about it. TFH is great, but it doesn't have the characters or setting background to draw from that the original Fighting is Magic game had.
