Hey Scotty! love you channel been watching for almost a year now! I just bought a 1995 RAV 4 2 door back in august for 1300 euro and i had my mechanic check it before i bought it. The car has 210k KM on and the engine is running perfect. I've been having a problem with my car since. Everytime i go on an uneven road or a speed bump i can feel the back of the car shacking left and right. Also when im shifting gears and I am on 2000 RPM and let go of the gas petal, i can feel the car shaking back and forth but not like its about to stall, more like its chassi is bending (back wheels coming closer to the front wheels) I hope that makes sense. My mechanic says the problem is on the rear sub-frame. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you for your time!!

I love when Scotty does his best to save us money. I can vouch for this video! DONT DO IT! I tried to flush my first cars transmission and it was all downhill from there. The lube shop that I went to told me that it would be a good idea to flush the transmission because it was slipping a little between 2nd and 3rd gear. After it was done it was slipping in 2,3, and 4 gears. Eventually lost reverse. I was so young and poor that I went as far as replacing all the transmission fluid with Lucas Stop Slip, another horrible idea. A while after that I couldn’t get it going unless I hopped out and gave it a push and jumped back in to give it gas before it would take off. Oh the fun times of being young and poor. I lease new cars now because I’ve given too much of my money to transmission shops.

@@howtodoitdude1662 what happens is there 2 ways to expand the life the transmission. As Scotty said, the friction helps those who never change transmission fluid, better to top off and reuse dirty old fluid as he said if you past the point of no return. Now if you keep up with fluid maintenance every 30k miles or something, then keep doing that. Either approach will exceed 100k miles. But the regular maintenance has a better chance of 300k. But both methods should see 150k in my experience. As I never did transmission work in all 3 of my cars. Toyota Tercel 97, 215k miles, Mazda 3 2003, 145k miles, Mazda 3 2015, 94k miles...no transmission problems ever on all 3 cars. A flat tire was all I've ever had. Lucky? Perhaps I was, you tell me.

My '94 Camry's auto (190,000 kms) was slipping when cold, sometimes finding a false neutral; then only working properly once fully warmed up. I decided to get the transmission and the torque converter flushed and replaced with new (Toyota brand) ATF. Now the auto box runs perfectly, no slip, no problems. wahyu subiyanto Same here. But as Scotty mentions, the auto engineer told him the fluid is good for the lifetime of the transmission. So if the life of the tranny is say 100-150k miles with the original fluid, wouldn’t it make sense that changing it prior to that would extend its life? I also wonder what to believe from the manufacturer’s service manual. Since the big profits for the dealerships is in servicing the vehicles and not in the actual sales, I suspect these service manuals are written with the dealers money making service department in mind. My local mechanic says that a lot of the stuff recommended in the service manual is either unnecessary or need not be done as often as recommended.

Excellent info, Scotty. I changed the trans fluid on my 2005 sienna at 220,000 miles. I removed several quarts each drain and filled with same amount. It got cleaner, and no slips. I will change filter in May and replace whatever quantity of oil I get out. But Maybe Toyota’s are just indestructible. My Avalon is 280,000 miles with only 2 changes, and my manual trans Camry in looking at 300,000 and is just starting to be broken in. But everything I read said don’t flush. And since Scotty says don’t, that makes it 11th Bill of Rights. DONT.

Hey Scotty. I have taught all 4 of my kids and varios other people how to drive an automatic and not abuse it. When I back out of the garage I stop, shift from reverse to neutral. I listen for motor rpm to stabilize then shift into drive. When transmission is in drive you can accelerate as you want without hurting trans. Other than that use a good trans fluid and change every 50 k miles. I never have any problems.

Scotty, when I worked on hot water heating systems, we would drain the system into a barrel, do our work, then pump that water back into the system. That water would be black and smelly but it still carried heat perfectly well and didn’t damage the pumps. Introducing fresh city water into an existing piping system brought along too much dissolved oxygen that would cause more corrosion...better to use the old de-oxygenated water. Flushing not necessary.

Always ask for a drain and fill. Never flush. You need about 3 drain and fills to get all the old fluid out. Do a drain and fill..drive 200 miles. Do another drain and fill .drive another 200 miles. Then do a 3rd drain and fill. Of course that costs more since a drain and fill is about 115 bucks.

For the “lifetime”, I asked an Aisin engineer at the Paris Show where they were exposing: lifetime is 400,000km (250,000 miles). That’s for Aisin transmissions. ZF used to recommend an oil and filter change for severe driving conditions, every 75,000 miles or 8 years and never for normal driving condition. But since they started their oil change business it’s 60,000 miles or 8 years for everybody xD An Allison TC-10 for Class 8 trucks will go 750,000miles between oil change, but that’s something else xD So here you go, I’m not an expert so I’m not can’t say who’s right, but that’s what transmission manufacturers says.

@nawzy202
@nawzy202 4 жыл бұрын
@Charles Larkin yes it's just a natural flow of the transmission pump that pushes old fluid out while you keep replacing it with new. Flush machines use alot more pressure to force fluid out and in return can damage it especially older transmissions. Another way would be drain old fluids fill it up with new run the car for few mins let it mix then drain again but this way you will be using alot of fluids to get same results by just unhooking return line

Ok, what if you use the transmission cooler send/return lines to drain/refill all the fluid from the pan, and torque converter? In effect, don't use a machine to "foce" fluid through it, use the transmission to flow out the old, flow in the new? I did that on my Lexus with 200k. I drove it 97k miles with no shifting problems. I sold it, and the fella I sold it to, still has it a year later. :)

If it were me, I would drop the pan, clean it, then replace the filter. I would NOT flush! Be certain, to get the right grade of transmission fluid. there are many different kinds, make sure you use what's specified. Often, it even tells what type right on the dipstick! My theory is, in half the cases, the flush is unsuccessful, because it could change ALL of the fluid in a certain transmission to the wrong kind. All the different fluids have different friction modifiers, and the wrong fluid can drastically change the characteristics of a transmission, including, rendering it USELESS!!

I had a Buick LeSabre and the transmission fluid got flushed about every 40,000 miles since it was new. It had 240,000 miles on it with the original transmission when I sold it and it still shifted great.
