Hi Scotty, Are 2012 mini cooper s clubman vehicles good/reliable? My mom owned it and put 3,000 miles on it and kept in garage for 3 years. Then she gave it to me for school and it now has 51,600 miles on it so far. I accelerate softly (no 0-60 runs ever), change full synthetic oil my self every 10,000 miles or once a year which ever comes first. No mechanical problems yet. Changed battery once so far but noticed it taking longer to start so I took it to an Interstate Batteries and their machine showed it was not putting out 550 crank amps so I will be replacing the battery soon. Should I be looking for a new/used car that is more reliable? Should i be prepared for an expensive fix soon? Thank you for your videos!!! I used your car battery video to see how to tell the age of a battery before I buy one :) I know the vehicle is old, has some miles, but the AC runs in the summer, heated seats are nice in winter, but I just cant afford an expensive repair so that is why if you recommend something, I will look into it. I am in Arizona btw. Thanks!!!

You will never use it. If ur car shreds a belt or tosses one you have bigger issues than just slapping on a spare belt. Locked up pulley, something broken or misaligned. They don’t just snap or slip and wear out for no reason. Just put a new one on every 60-100k and don’t worry about it.

Something I notice quite often, usually at night when a car is coming at me, is a vehicle having one headlight brighter than the other. That's usually because the owner replaced a bulb and accidentally installed the new one upside-down because they likely didn't pay attention to the indexing notches.

When it comes to potholes, I'm the opposite. Always hitting the left, but quite rarely hit the right. I live in the USA. My mechanic thinks my brain is wired in reverse. 😂 I had a similar situation with the brake calipers and my mechanic said we just needed to replace the one side and *I* said "nah, replace both" thus proving his theory about my brain. I'm OCD like that.

One more thing Scotty....when the belts are being replaced,it's a very good idea to change the water pump in the same time as well! Even if it's in good condition,you'll never know when it will break down,and by replacing it in the same time as the belt,saves a lot of money on labour!
@stevensevek6151
@stevensevek6151 4 жыл бұрын
I believe that advice only applies when the water pump is driven by a timing belt and the timing belt is being replaced. The labor to replace a timing belt is very high compared to the cost of replacing a serpentine drive belt.

Scotty, I'm a believer in replacing at a lot of parts in pairs (i.e. light bulbs, brake pads, etc.) I'm reminded of the logic my Uncle once used on his Doctor. When told the pain in one knee may be due to old age, he replied, "Doc that can't be right, this other knee is as old as that knee and it doesn't hurt. Of course my logic is that the adjacent light bulb has the same number of hours of service, so it must be near its end of life.

I still refer to any engine belt as a 'fan belt'. Do the next owner a favour; When you change a belt, use a white paint-pen to write the date and mileage on it, or on the cover, if it has one. I bought a Golf that had the engine code, AZD, and the belt-change date written on the cover. Thank you, previous owner. (I do that with the filters, too)

A Mechanic Named Sue. In 1998 I went to a service center called Brake King with a 78 Volvo 242 . I found out what they SHOULD have been called. They broke off the nipple on 2 calipers and said I needed a set of calipers as well as the brake fluid change and hoses I went in for. BREAK King. 😒

I got very lucky at a self service wrecking yard once. I was looking for a part for my 2003 Hyundai Sonata. I was planning on buying new struts in a few months and replacing them, but not at that time. I found another car like mine, and someone had replaced just about everything in the steering and front suspension. It was so recent, that the parts only had a little dust on them. I pulled just about everything, paying less for all the parts than I would have spent for just a set of new struts.
