Will Smith’s weight loss journey is an amazing example to study and learn from. I’m so proud of Will for all his hard work through the series but wow exhausting is an understatement. Let’s go through some of the biggest changes that would have made his weight loss (fat loss) journey much more enjoyable while still getting results and staying healthy!

Fat loss is challenging enough already, so there's no need to make it even tougher with an approach that sets you up to feel like you've failed. I still see and hear about these mistakes all the time in 2021, so here are some of my biggest tips for getting serious results without feeling exhausted or frustrated! I'm so impressed by Will's work ethic, he put up such a fight despite the process he was given, and I'm so so happy for where he got to personally and mentally through this show 🤍 This was easily my favourite series on KZbin for a long time and I still really recommend you watch it!! 👏🙌

Ok, so quick storytime: back in Nov 2019, I was around 240-250 lbs (5'7"), my dr said "pre-diabetic" with my lab results, and I started going hard to lose the weight, like I always did. I joined a kickboxing challenge to lose 25 lbs in a month, joined WW, ate 1200 kcal a day, etc etc....and hit a brick wall pretty quickly. Lockdowns happened and I gained weight back, but I bought a Nintendo Switch, Ring Fit Adventure and Fit Boxing, and started watching different videos (O2B, Abby Sharp, and Greg Doucette. I had fun, got a sweat on, but kept pushing for the greater and greater deficit. Finally, in Sept 2020, the gyms opened back up, and I started working out every day (often multiple times a day), spending upwards of 20 hours a week in spin classes, with the weight dropping...finally, the KZbin algorithm brought me your videos (and FrumpyFit), and seeing how you brought together intelligence, strength and solid food and nutrition, helped me to take a deep breath and pivot away from crashing out my metabolism. The final straw was a massive Father's Day meal at a steakhouse, during which I enjoyed bison meatballs and steak and bread and sweet potatoes, and ate around 3000 kcal for the day, and felt AMAZING the next day. Watching your assessment of Will Smith's journey, which reflected my own (minus the highly paid staff, resources, and cameras), helped me to put it all in perspective, especially as I seem to have happily plateaued in the 180s (although my goal was and is 150). Watching your videos helped me realize that food isn't an enemy and it is absolutely necessary to fuel the activities I enjoy, and overexercise is the quickest way to gain all the weight back (because busting my knee or shoulder again will ensure no workout happens). So, yeah. Dunno if I've said it before, but thanks for what you do, and I'm glad you're back making content. 💙

“You can’t hate yourself and hate the process into getting healthier” hit home so hard. A few years ago I gained a lot of weight quite quickly due to mental health issues and then hated how unfamiliar I felt in my own body. I tried everything I could to lose the weight as fast as possible and was so focused on the physical weight of my body instead of how I felt. I did a 6 week challenge with my gym and trained so much and ate so well but at the end I’d only lost half a kilo. I was devastated and it completely ruined my relationship with food and exercise for a long time. It’s only recently that I’ve been to let go of the numbers and focus on what makes me the feel the best and now I’m seeing the results that I’ve wanted for so long!

And i also dont like being really lax with myself because i feel like i cant do that because every time i dont pressure myself to do something i will NEVER do it. So i feel like in order for me to lose weight i would HAVE to be extremely hard on myself because its the only way i know how to get things done. Every other way gets me no where. I feel like i would have to torture myself in order to lose weight because if i be lax at all with myself i wont do shit at alll. If i only focused on how i felt i would not gotten anywhere.

Woah. It's honestly so crazy for me to hear that hitting 30,000 steps is overly intense. I do landscaping for a living and I regularly get about 22,000 to 30,000 steps in every work day. That doesn't even factor in all of the carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, and other rigorous activities that I engage in. I keep trying to communicate to my boss that all of his employees are effectively amateur athletes, and that there is a limit to how much the human body can withstand especially when you factor temperature and humidity into the equation as well. This video has helped to put my physical health into a better perspective. I am constantly bummed out when I can't bring myself to work out after pushing a lawnmower all day long in excessive heat. I should be nicer to myself because I already do so much. Thank you for this video.

@riyalriyali 2 жыл бұрын
Here are my notes from the video: 1. Will's goals were primarily weight-based, even though his main issue is with his body composition. This is not the recommended approach as weight is affected by water retention, muscle, and fat, being married to the number on the scale can cause Will's goal of looking better, to compete with Will's goal of simply being lighter 2. Will's Training plan does not have any periodization and he is going straight in with far too much volume, the trainer mentioned that sustainability was kept in mind with the plan, yet he is doing potentially 11 sessions and 9 hours of training per week without any prior adaptation or load management. 3. Taking on too much at once may come at the expense of Will's other lifestyle goals like writing his autobiography. If training is something that takes away from your lifestyle rather than add to it, it can become something you resent. 4. Progress is not linear and not automatic, Will feels defeated by gaining weight in week one rather than trusting the process, to compensate for this he goes too hard and burns himself out the next week. 5. Wills diet and exercise aren't enjoyable, a healthy diet and exercise can be fun and delicious, the harder you make these things to endure, the harder it is to stay on the process. 6. Will starts going a little crazy and doing way too much and the word sustainability goes out the window, will inevitably get injured. 7. Will has CLEAR progress and his body looks great, but he's too focused on the scale and still feels like shit. 8. Will in his possessive pursuit of a smaller number on the scale starts working out 4x a day and stops sleeping. This is causing massive drops in physical performance and a huge drop in his mental health. 9. Will has a breakthrough and realizes that he's worked himself to the bone to prove a point, but he's just hurting himself and decides to pull back on all of the training he's been doing. Stops caring about the weight so much.

I’m working with a PT right now and I absolutely love her. She refuses to train anyone that doesn’t also sign up for her nutrition and mindset training because she knows that we get hung up on goals. The biggest thing we all do is send her our wins every single day. When you do that you start focusing on little things and actually see them as big things. I’ve been training with her for a month now and the scale hasn’t budged an inch despite me working out 4-5 times a week. It was starting to eat at me a little until I realized that my squat and deadlift form looks super professional again now, I can finally touch my toes again (before I could barely get past my knees), I could only do planks for 10 seconds before I got nauseated and now I can go over 30 seconds, I’m up on weights from 5-10 lbs to 15-20 lbs upper body, and 15 lbs to 40 lbs on lower body. Not to mention my reps have gone up by 3-5 per set. Success needs to be measured in other ways besides the scale for sure. Especially when you’re doing resistance training because of the weight of muscle.

Do you need to count calories to loose weight? I’m eating healthy and workout out 5 days a week and I’m not losing weight
@emz33
@emz33 Жыл бұрын
@@Daniellep8169 I don’t, counting calories just leads to over obsession. I still count every so often to make sure I’m eating enough since eating less than your base metabolic rate can actually slow your metabolism and make it harder to lose. (You can look up a BMR calculator to find yours. I’m 5’9, 220 lbs and 32 years old so my BMR is 1800 calories. That’s the base amount I need to just simply exist without any movement. With my exercise level I really don’t want to eat less than 2000 with my maintenance amount set at 2400. If I aim for 2000-2200 I should be in a deficit) If you’re working out 5x a week make sure you’re varying what you do. Alternate strength and cardio and vary that up within each category. Your body is REALLY good at getting efficient with what it’s doing and will start burning less and less energy to do the same amount of work. HIIT or Tabata is great for cardio and easy to do. Most of the workouts are only 20 minutes too :) With strength you want to vary up with high weight low rep and low weight high rep. If you’re already doing all of that and still not losing, then ditch the scale all together and start taking body measurements instead. Remember that muscle weighs a lot more than fat, so you could be losing inches but not budging on the scale. And as I mentioned above, make sure to measure your success in your fitness ability too “mind your gap” to see where you started and where you are now. Hope that helps 🥰

It looks like this series is from 20 years ago! Why on earth did they rely on traditional scales to measure Will’s progress? I’m sure they could have gotten some of those special scales that measure fat, muscle and water etc and explained why they shouldn’t just be looking at how many kilos he is. Also 20 pounds in 20 weeks seems a bit unrealistic for sustainable fat loss, that means you can’t make any mistakes in 5 months! And how weird that they didn’t have a registered dietitian. All of this plus the crazy amount of exercise and lack of explanations of the science reminds me so much of 90’s /20’s crash dieting 🙃

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is very unreliable/inaccurate so I don't think that'd be much better. There was one shot that showed that he was getting a DXA scan, which is the "gold standard" for body composition measurement (but it isn't something you can or should do daily) and if I recall, another that showed them having circumference measurements for each body part (the best way thing unless you're skilled with calipers to be measuring at home). A proper waist measurement is probably all that's really necessary to really track progress, along with a moving average of a daily weigh-in, but I agree it was a disservice (to the audience at least) to focus so strongly on weight (and on a monotonic progression, at that, which rarely happens). 1lb/wk is generally agreed to be pretty sustainable and not really a "crash diet," although it's definitely tougher to achieve if you're over-exercising, stressed, and not getting enough sleep.

I don’t think the goal also factored in the stress of writing his book plus whatever other stress is in his life. He’s also not hugely overweight to begin with so it’s not like he’s trying to lose 20 pounds starting off as morbidly obese. He ended up doing more exercise than he could reasonably sustain long term to try to reach his goal.

One of the things that we forget when we look at celebrities' bodies and fitness levels is that maintaining that look is their JOB. Will mentioned putting on weight for a role, and it makes sense he might workout like this for a role. But that isn't realistic for regular people. People who work full time, have families and other commitments can't work out multiple times a day, and most of us can't afford the best nutritionists and personal trainers in the world. It's so important to keep that perspective when we start comparing ourselves to celebrities
@ivy456
@ivy456 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest people don't need all of that to get healthier and lose weight. I always hate it when people look at celebrities and think they need all of that and that it's so difficult if you're "normal". That way of thinking is only setting people up for failure. I fell for it too. The truth is that the information is out there. I only had to look on my goverments recommended diet and portions. My uncle lost weight with a thyroid condition and a disability. I know a lot of people health conditions and commitments but still made it work for their health. Celebrity nutritionists and personal trainers are usually not even that good. Have you seen the unnecessary bs they recommend?
@haikukillyou1971
@haikukillyou1971 2 жыл бұрын
I think you missed the point Ivy. Basically they’re saying that the weight loss/gain is their job. Yes it’s not that difficult and the information is out there but most blue collar workers already have a job or even two and it really is harder to do all that plus work your ass off to lose the weight. Basically saying the priorities and the availability to organize and reorganize those if needed is limited.
@ivy456
@ivy456 2 жыл бұрын
@@haikukillyou1971 I know what you meant. I know it's their job. However you don't have to work your ass off to lose weight. It's calories in versus calories out. I know plenty regular people that lost weight. Some of them exercise some don't. They have jobs too. That's the problem with society. With all these diets and celebrities I thought like many people it would be hard. It kept me from losing weight but the concept is very simple. The hardest part is adherence. Finding cheap food is not crazy hard. Nothing wrong with frozen veggies or fruit. I know some diets are against bread, beans, pasta or potatoes but they are cheap and fast. Good enough for me. Sure if you want to be a body builder it would take more effort but normal weightloss not so much.

I started my weight loss journey in february this year, after a disastrous 2020 I had ballooned up to 242 pounds, and keep in mind I am only 5'8". After a serious battle with alcoholism, in which i relapsed several times I might add, I was eventually able to get my diet on track and get below 200 pounds, something I had been unable to do the past 4 years. It has been such a hassle losing the weight that I couldn't imagine ever being able to do it again. The physical training and exercise is obviously hard, and the dieting is hard too of course, but IMO the hardest part for me was dealing with the boredom that comes with giving up alcohol when you're used to not going a day without it. finding new ways to entertain yourself that don't involve cracking open that next beer and ordering pizza, etc is a full on psychological war once you've fallen into that cycle.

I lost 80lbs (36kg) between June 2020 and March 2021. Diet, Exercise and 4 strict months of 22:2 intermittent fasting. 285lbs to 205lbs. I FELT great, but there was a belly I couldnt get rid of and psychologically, that broke me. I did all of that work for almost a year, turned it all around and just could not get past 205 or that belly. Around this time I got into a relationship that is super supportive and healthy, which is a whole new experience for me. I have put on 35lbs since March. Im not proud of it, and Im starting to work back on it again, but being healthy really is a lot more MENTAL and EMOTIONAL than it is PHYSICAL. Wish more people would have told me that during my journey. More "food for thought," as I go forward.

The part where you explain how an emotional response or a lifestyle change based on impulse creates a domino effect and is not sustainable really resonated with me. That's been key in disrupting my workout/ diet program in the past, including deciding to become pescatarian for a year. I've been on a workout program for ~6months and although I'm stronger and feel better than when I was 'skinnier' I also weigh more than I have in YEARS. It's hard not to look at the number and hear sirens in your head. For me, and given my health history, moderation has been the most important in feeling in control of my diet. Restriction has never worked long term. I'm too old and too tired to go on a new 'trendy' diet every other 6 months. This video was really helpful and your approach was not one of reproach. It was gentle and informative. 💓💓💓

Thank you for this! I was just as frustrated as you when I watched this series a few weeks ago, for many of the same reasons. I really liked how you summed up all the issues here. One extra thing I noticed was that they did only weekly weigh ins, and put *so* much emphasis on those results. Daily weight fluctuations are massive, and it's so important for me to do daily weigh ins so that I understand and remember that 1-2lb (or even more) fluctuations every day are perfectly normal. Even if he weighs in at 1lb over the previous week, he could easily wake up the next morning 1lb lighter than the previous week. I have been on a weight loss journey myself, and have been aiming for 1lb/week weight loss. I checked where I was 20 weeks ago from today, and it turns out I've lost almost exactly 20lb in those 20 weeks. The fact is, that it doesn't require killing yourself to do this! The diet and exercise routines need to be there, but they don't need to be that extreme. I've been on a 500 calorie deficit, which for me mostly doesn't mean being particularly hungry. I get to feel mostly satiated and feel like I'm fuelling myself (sure, I'd love to eat more, but I'm not starving). I've been doing 3-4 sessions of resistance training per week, along with frequent walks (maybe 8000 steps a day on average). It's kind of disappointing honestly that the show made it seem like such a titanic struggle to lose 20lb in 20 weeks when in fact this *can* be a very sustainable rate of weight loss.

I'm so happy I found you! I'm training to be a PT and figuring out what kind of PT to be and I want to be a compassionate trauma informed PT. I've trained with a few other PT and had some shitty experience, but I've also had wonderful coaches who kept me motivated.

Honestly, your voice was in my head the whole time I watched this series ! I kept sort of doing my own imaginary cut away to you, with your wonderful smile and gentle nature coming in hard with all the facts you’ve embedded in my brain (THANK GOD!!). Like, “Now, we know by now this isn’t it, right? This isn’t how this works.” I was so DELIGHTED when I saw you had actually made a full reaction video to it!! I wish every PT out there would watch your content to see how it COULD be done. How many people would have such a radically different experience with their own health journeys if there were more like you out there. A radically more POSITIVE and efficacious one.

I didn't realize how much I needed to watch this video. I had never heard about this series, but the analysis, particularly where you said (I'm paraphrasing) "he is meeting his goals but the scale has corrupted his perspective" was really useful. No matter how much you tell yourself the scale doesn't matter, as soon as you step on it, all these unconscious cultural perspectives and ideas come in whether you want them to or not. And "you can't hate yourself and hate the process into becoming healthy" was also a gem. It's so true.

Hey Nat. I’m actually so glad that I’ve got to find your channel. I’ve been obsessively dieting and restricting myself for so long that I’ve got so deprived (not only physically but mentally). This kind of videos really help to find that “balance” and to also acknowledge mental health and physical health as a whole. Couldn’t be more grateful that we’ve got you to explain. Cheers ❤️❤️

This is simply fantastic commentary with crystal clear observation, first-hand knowledge and expertise. There are so many little nuggets of wisdom in this 30-ish minute discussion (I'll be watching this again many times I'm sure). I say discussion as it feels very much like Natacha is chatting with you about how to not only work-out smarter, but live life happier. I needed to see this video and am very thankful I did.

This brought me back to when I used to beat myself up if I didn’t hit my weight loss goal smh. Aiming to FEEL better should always be the objective, physically AND mentally. Not to mention, it should always be *sustainable* !!! I love how well you broke this down ❤️

He looks so drained. I can’t imagine why celebrities have the supposed best of the best and then do these crazy diets and workout schedules. Reminds of how Beyoncé went super restrictive for her Coachella postpartum and it just seems that someone should’ve told her that there’s an easier way.

Omg Natasha!!! You literally just set off the light bulbs in my brain!!!! Your are so right… the scale should not determine or define how I look at myself or how I feel! The scale has been an obsessive obstacle for me… but I am in the best shape of my life!!!

Thank you for giving your perspective on this! I loved Will’s series and his drive was certainly inspiring. While this approach worked for him, I do think narratives like this lead me to believe for a lot of my life that a fitness journey HAD to be intense, it had to hurt physically and mentally in order to work. When I had that mindset I just gave up and didn’t stick with it. After watching channels like yours I realized I could focus on moving my body in ways that actually felt fun to me and made me feel good. Putting enjoyment at the center of my strategy and slowly adding in sessions or different activities has been transformative for me in achieving sustainability.

Thank you for this video. I love you. Just what I needed to hear about my fitness journey. I just recovered from an injury and haven't been feeling my best. I've managed to get back in my workout routine, and while I can feel my muscle mass growing, the weight scale is only going up. This has demotivated me for the past few days, but your words have instilled a new sense of confidence and patience in me.

The series was such an emotional roller-coaster for me. Right now, I have a friend who, after many years, I finally convinced to join me on a weight-loss journey. Watching Wills series, I see a lot of parallels between him and how my friend is struggling with taking his programme seriously. I am really happy to see more of your insight. Next time my friend and I train, I'll introduce the science angle more cohesively.

I'm sure you mean well and I'm sorry if I've read too much into what you wrote, but: If it's taken you years to "convince" your friend to join you, please consider whether their struggles with "taking the programme seriously" stems from a lack of internal motivation. Even if this friend has expressed an interest in losing weight, this may just not be the right time for them to do it. Changing old habits and getting fit usually takes a lot of energy out of you, and if your friend has other things going on they may not be in a position right now where they can afford to expend that energy. So if the only reason why they're doing the programme in the first place is because you told them to, you probably shouldn't expect them to take it as seriously as you do. Of course, it's great if you're equally motivated but you can both have fun doing the programme even if one of you is taking it more seriously than the other.

Great video Natacha! I agree with you wholeheartedly. I’m 51 and have lost about 100lbs over the past year and it really didn’t seem too hard and I never did the same types of workouts he was subjected to. Sure, it takes discipline and there are periods of discomfort, sure, but I like what I’m eating and I just try to get 10000-16000 steps a day, 5 days a week and control what I eat … I still have another 20lbs to lose, but at least it seems “sustainable”
