I worked for TYT off and on btw 2013 - 2020 and helped start the union. Cenk's union-busting included smearing unionizing workers publicly by claiming the union originated as a ploy by his political foes to harm his congressional campaign, which is complete BS. It helped Cenk avoid having to answer 'why did your workers unionize?' because the answers to that question would reveal the kind of person he really is. In my case, I was working 40-hr weeks as a video editor while classified by Cenk as "part-time" in order to not receive benefits. He doesn't live the principles he sells his audience.

Hasan (whom incidentally speaks highly of you guys even at times when you disagree with each other) made a good point, you can't grift on the left because there's no money in it. He acknowledges that his brand itself is an anomaly in all of this (getting 300k people in his chat on election night), nobody else even comes close. TYT used to get numbers like that, but they spent years arguing against their viewers when they got things wrong or were otherwise being rather unfair or unjust. Now they've become the grifters, and the sad part is that they don't even realize it. I think it's better for people to stop supporting them because their message is far too muddled, stress inducing, and now it's almost like they've become rich themselves... and somehow think that people are out to get their money or property. Maybe it's just a sign of the times, as a lot of right wing grifters from 8-20 years ago are on the decline too (if they're not in legal trouble), and TYT got too out of touch. Cenk says his policies haven't changed, but I guarantee that Bernie Sanders would not approve of half of the takes that they've been having lately. And Bernie's been saying the same things all his life. If Cenk hasn't changed, then he's that same asshole I watched 10+ years ago laughing about how fat Kim Kardashian's thighs were... I called him out on it and he got super defensive!

On the Kim Kardashian thing. Even way back when I largely felt positive about TYT, I've always felt super uncomfortable with how lowbrow and sorta /pathetic/ their coverage of celebrity gossip was. Considering how many left-leaning/progressive essayists have such meaningful things to say about things like parasocial relationships & the complicated relationship between audiences and celebrities, it always stood out as a sore thumb that TYT's coverage of such topics was basically TMZ-level in terms of attitude and opinions. I don't necessarily think they were simply lying about their views but there was always this dark underbelly to TYT that stood out whenever they threw in their opinions on non-political stuff. The first time it clicked to me how hollow their views were was when Jimmy Dore made this really violent anti-trans joke about punching a queen (implying if a trans person ever hit on him, he'd deck her out) and everyone just laughed at the 'joke'.

I started losing my taste for TYT about two years ago, when Anna started really going in on the homeless population in LA. Around the same time she seemed to have lost all patience for Cenk, which really seemed to interfere with the current topic, and just devolved in to vitriol. Cenk has always ran a little hot, which isn't really my speed, but I used to find myself in alignment with a lot of his general takes on various issues. He was on Pakman recently, and I really sensed a change in him since the last time I checked in. When I saw this tirade on Hassan's show it felt a bit like the final disappointment. I really don't understand any more what they're trying to do. I was a paying member for TYT since that membership drive Emma talks about, for exactly the reason she mentions. This was going to be the progressive counterbalance bringing facts in Trump's America of alternative facts, and I wanted to support that. For me it wasn't so much the trans stuff everyone's focusing on. That was like, ok, they might be wrong, but I'm not in a cult and I don't need to agree with everything. Let's agree to disagree and move on. But what I couldn't move on from was them pushing that NYT "Screams without words" story. Ana even got into twitter fights about that, shouting down everyone who criticized them, telling them to not watch the show any more. I was absolutely furious that - as a supposedly leftwing show - they were pushing what amounted to Israeli propaganda at a time when the support for Israel's genocidal onslaught was waning. I unsubscribed in disgust. It's absolutely hilarious that Cenk demands the mantle of being "the Left" while alienating his actual progressive audience by pushing rightwing stories (that either get immediately debunked or were already debunked at the time they were pushing them).

Cenk presents himself as a very serious “adult in the room,” but he came off as extremely thin-skinned and immature when the subject of Sam came up on Hasan’s stream. The one thing he brought up to “prove” that Sam was a grifter is that he tries to get into the algorithm of people who watch Jimmy Dore, Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, etc. Honestly, it just seems like Cenk is super salty that another leftist commentator has found a much better way of getting his message out!
