Actually as an asian who was asked to learn the piano since five years old, I'm quite glad that my parents didn't force me to learn anymore when I wanted to quit. That's the reason why my love of classical music wasn't burned out, and I actually have met some friends that are literally traumatized by classical music because of thier tiger moms who had forced them to learn. At least as an adult now I can still enjoy classical music and I have picked up my piano learning.

Agh I’m in this boat, I really really hated my piano classes and only got out of them when I went to university, and even then it was a really distressing ordeal trying to convince them to let me drop them for the idk hundredth time. I was well past the point where I could recognize that while I didn’t even necessarily hate music or the instrument, the association with my parents and lack of choice made me absolutely miserable, which in turn made it so that I couldn’t even learn piano properly! I just couldn’t put any attention or work into something that made me so unhappy, so just all around an uneffective and waste of everyone’s time and energy for both my parents and me (they still blame me for not being grateful enough for the classes that. I told them lots of times that I didn’t even want. Blegh)

Same here! Quitting violin was my first independent decision in life and I've never regretted it. I still had nightmares about exams many years later. If I had forced myself or, even worse, got forced by my parents, I would probably hate classical music now.

Me, a traumatized kid. Played violin for 7 years but was constantly forced to practice even when I didn't want to. Quit and haven't touched the instrument in years. Pushing people to do things--even in their best interest--works for some, not everyone. Still enjoy classical music though.

My grandmother took me to piano lessons every week - 3 times a week 22 miles away so 44 miles round trip! She drove me there… Waited outside… Drove me home… During the 7 years we did this she learnt French! On cassette…in the car! She was the most amazing woman ever 🥰❤️‍🔥🎹

To a clarinetist, tone is sooo important. That’s probably why your friend is so good at picking out the difference in what bow your using. Clarinets have so many mouthpieces, ligatures, and reed sizes you have to try them and figure out which gives you the best sound. You become very sensitive to the differences.

Not only that, but I have had to completely abandon practicing because my tone was too off. The notes were in tune, but my playing is VERY tone based so I just couldn't handle it. Especially since each register has its own unique sound, the tone quality becomes almost more important than the pitch, almost.

Yup, if you relax too much or get too stiff we also squeak, so it's a process lol also, every register is quite unique that's why "instrument specific" pitch recognition is very common for clarinetists

Oh yea, basically all reed instruments are SUPER sensitive to tone from reeds and/or mouthpieces. Double reeds especially, but clarinet also has more variance in their tone across the registers. Flutes sound like flutes... and brass like brass, for the most part, lol

And reeds have different tone qualities. The entire time they were going on about it the only thing I could think was “It’s because of the reeds.” We have to know good reeds vs bad reeds and we have to change them about every month (every couple of weeks if you don’t rotate). We spend a little too much time finding the best reed each time we have to change. We become so in tune with the tone we want that we know how to recognize it.

Behind every great musician is their committed parents! My dear mum had no money to pay for piano lessons so she exchanged lessons for working in the teacher's garden, I will always appreciate her so deeply for that! She longed to play piano herself but arthritis stopped her, so in retrospect that gardening must have been so painful for her but she never complained. So much respect for the people (partners, parents, teachers, friends) "behind the scenes" as it were, who make musicians possible.

I so agree with what Brett and Eddy say about meeting people who did music as a child and gave it up but grow up regretting it. Whenever I tell people I’m a piano teacher I always tell them it’s never too late. And I practice what I preach because I started practicing violin again because of these two!

The "i wish my parents forced me" crowd really doesn't know what they wish for. It is never late to learn a new skill or continue the education you stopped in childhood. But if you abuse your kid to make them finish the school they hate, the mental damage is already done and it is irreversible. I was that kid. I'm 62 and I started piano lessons three months ago. My first recital is next month, in a real recital hall on a concert grand. I am so excited to get to play on that piano! (Even though my two pieces are super basic and probably last a minute and a half altogether. Fortunately, my teacher's other students will also be performing.)

Practice is something that kids are often loathe to do, and parents do need to sometimes insist on them doing it. But it should never be the kind of pressure that causes mental health problems. Honestly, I’m 13 and i started watching you in second grade and in third grade you guys convinced me to learn violin. However, my mom always told me I could learn it in middle school, after holding my first violin in fourth grade I felt as if my dreams were coming true. In sixth grade I finally got a violin, and ended up snapping the E string immediately (it was fixed for free thankfully). I’m seventh grade I started watching you guys again (I stopped around fifth grade) and would practice watching your videos everyday. My teacher noticed I was getting better, and showed me off plus told my mom I needed private lessons after randomly playing Vivaldi Spring and Summer. Now, I’m more driven to practice than ever, and I picked up vibrato, chords, double stops, shifting, trills, staccato, slurs, harmonics, tremolo, all while watching you’re videos. I even had my first solo in orchestra, I played in a sextet, and played in an important orchestra. I even picked up music theory stuff while watching, and I hope to be going to my first concert in October. I even introduced my friend to you guys!! So moral of that story is, all 13 year olds aren’t like Brett.😊😊😊😊

Regarding the parents and paying for lessons: when I was in elementary school my music teacher wanted me to play in the middle school band so I got out of school one hour early, my mom picked me up every day and drove me to the middle school for band. It didn’t stop there, then she drove me every day after band to my ballet lesson which I had six days a week. Hats off to all the parents that encouraged their kids in both music and dance. Wish my Mom was still alive so she could now see me playing piano. Thanks Mom

As an Italian, I confirm that here in South and also Center Europe the situation is critical. Where I live, in the region of Emilia-Romagna (North Italia) it literally has never rained for months, and now we are on the edge of an emergency due to the lack of water. Also due to the great hot a enormous section of a glacier in Alps has falling down killing hikers yesterday, there are still researches going on to found bodies. That is a serious situation, and we are not even in the warmest section of Summer.

If you played as a kid and quit you can always restart playing. I played violin as a kid and stopped when I was around 13. I am 41 now and started playing again 3 or 4 years ago and I just had my first lesson as an adult a few weeks ago. Interestingly my childhood violin teacher is still around so I took lessons with her. If you want to play an instrument and you are an adult just go for it.

A European here that's from a nordic country....it is BLAZING out here! We are currently riding out the last of our heatwave (hopefully) and it's been HELL (quite literally). And this is the second summer in a row, where temperatures have been over 30 degrees celsius, some parts 35+ degrees for weeks at a time. Last summer it was all three months (it was so bad they had to issue a broadcast where they said that people shouldn't water their gardens cause the water was running out) and this summer it has been like this for about 3 weeks. I was one of those kids that started lessons at 3 and burnt out by 16. I did well, concertmaster in several youth orchestras, placing in competitions, but I was physically punished if I didn't practice. I never had a chance to truly develop a love of the music and learn to express it in my own way. I ended up with stress injuries. I know this is an extreme example, but I think what's most important for motivation is cultivating a love and artistry of music, like you guys do on this channel. (I am planning on getting back into it, once I can afford to)

The problem with Asian parents (and other parents with similar behavior) is that they attribute success to happiness. You developed a great skill by practicing a lot, but you never developed the passion you need to motivate yourself to keep practicing. Even if you didn't say you stopped lessons, I could guarantee that you've stopped or going to stop once you're living life on your own, because the motivation is simply not there.

6:00 there's a nice method to find out the piece if you can remember it's melody and it works for decently well known pieces You translate your unknown melody it into something called parsons code, which turns a melody into a string of letters consisting of "u, d, r" standing for up, down, repeat. These letters stand for the melodic movement between consecutive notes, so if you take the beginning of K545, it would be uuduududud. (C goes up to E goes up to G goes down to B etc.) Then you plug it into a parsons code searcher and hope it comes up

Relate so much to the part about wishing not to have quit an instrument, though my case is a bit different. I learned violin as a kid and stopped after 2 years because my teacher sucked and never corrected my bad posture, which made it impossible for me to learn more advanced techniques later on. Recently I've been trying to relearn it and somehow it feels harder than I remember it was. So... Just practice I guess😂

I've had a similar experience with my own father. Yes, you can rationalize it as they having the best intentions, or coming out of fear. But do always give yourself a little bit of time and space on the side (he doesn't even need to know) to pursue your own projects is my recommendation, or when you're old enough and living independently do pick them up again -This is what I desperately wish I could tell my younger self, because I was too obidient and my father was too domeneering, inflexible and controlling. It messed me up for many years :(

Take it up at school! They're not the best instruments but at least you have something. After playing for a while they might change their mind seeing you improve :)

Can I just say, I always find it so endearing when they act genuinely confused on why people find *certain* *videos* of them exciting. Like, it actually confuses them when people think they're hot or attractive. I can definitely understand them being embarrassed, although truthfully the video of Brett didn't really show anything too risque. But, come on, guys! I just wish to say, as respectfully as I can put it, that you are both very attractive men. Not just physically, but personality-wise as well. Had a similar experience many decades ago when playing the piano as an accompanist to a choir at the Albert Hall and the brass section decided to gradually lower my piano seat. I kept playing and luckily it was during the rehearsal not the concert itself. The brass section were and remain my friends.

As a European I can confirm there are several heat waves going on (as usual). I'm from Spain, but live in Germany. We hit 38º the other day T-T. My parents have been living in h€ll for several weeks, I think the storm... wave is hitting now xD But the usual is 36-38º for them ^^ (probably "real feel" of 40-42º if you stay under the sun :|)

It’s difficult to know what is best to do as a parent. I have a friend who, music is so much of her life, she plays loads of instruments, has degrees in music, loves playing, listening to, everything about music. But really resents her mother effectively chaining her (not literally) to the piano as a kid and not letting her have as much of a normal life as other kids. But without that would she get all the enjoyment from music that she does today?

I’m almost 12, and you guys really inspired me to want to learn a string instrument. I always thought I’d stay with just piano, or move to vocals, but now I really want to play viola (please don’t come after me, I have a good reason. my sister is a violinist and we both love viola and violin duets, so when I learn to play we can do duets together. Our brother is a violist but he never wants to play with her. Plus, I just really like viola)

About the music point: I love piano but being forced to learn it takes all the fun out of it for me. I'm very grateful to my parents for letting me learn the piano, driving me to my lessons, and talking with my teacher, but I always hated the exam system. I wanted to quit after learning most of it, but I wasn't allowed (even though my sister quit when she got to that point). So basically, I'm very grateful and I would never stop playing piano completely, but I wish I quit lessons sooner.

I have a couple things to say, one you guys are amazing, so amazing that if my orchestra director (at school) doesn't feel like have to dealing with our class he'll put you on instead. 2nd if you go to Google, click the microphone, you should see something that says search song all you have do is hum, sing, or even play a clip where you found the song. I almost quit piano when i was 12, but my piano teacher pulled me aside and very politely asked me not to. i felt so guilty that i decided to just stick with it for a couple more months. I didn’t stop lessons until i left for college and music is still one of my favorite hobbies.

I was so happy back then, but I get bored so quickly... And recently my parents said, "hey, the piano have been sitting there for years but I havent seen you played it" and Bam! Got me there. I feel so lucky to learn oboe in my school's wind band back in elementary school and junior high. I had oboe lessons three hours a week and my parents only spent 100 usd every semester. (The normal tuition for oboe students is 75 usd an hour in my country) One of the clarinet teachers even spent an hour every week to help us with our wood quintet without us paying more. I guess the tuition is on the whole band✌️ Also there's no need to drive. The only thing is I didn't practice a lot 😂

I think that "I wish I never quit" sample is a bit overestimated, like I can't imagine that many people would got out of their way to tell you "Oh, I was forced to play, but I quit, that was the best decision of my life", I think people who do wish they know how to play are more likely to bring it out to someone they know are musician.

The most hated person in my universe was my High School orchestra instructor. Near the end of my first year, he pulled me aside and told me not to continue. He said I just didn't have the talent to pursue my love of the cello. It was devastating at the time, especially when he said I was one of the hardest workers he'd ever taught and my desire was so obvious. I'd fail in music, but if I went with my strength in math/science/tech somewhere, I'd do fine, and wouldn't end up hating the classics. Near 60 years later, I still love the classics. I don't hate him anymore, not a bit. I'm still sad I didn't/don't have the talent. I still envy all you folks that do. You Are Blessed.

My parents let me quit at the age of 15. One year later I was back on taking private lessons at a really awesome teacher, who's still my teacher today and now I got a job as a violinist in three orchestras for two months earning my living with it.
