I can also kind of relate because I didn't speak English at all when I went to pre-kindergarten in US at 4. Apparently I was silent for a year and my classmates thought that I couldn't talk. My teacher had to teach me sign language for toilet so I can signal her when I needed to go to the toilet...

@@shawqin992 LOL, when you use the word toilet, that's the give away that you're not from the USA...because the word used is bathroom. It's interesting that Americans find the word toilet too immodest, but for the most part, too many Americans have no sense of modesty with how they dress.

7:55 Hilary Hahn is a genius. She used the correct logic strategy from the Monty Hall problem (the one with three doors). Eddy knew that one of Brett's statements was true, so he asked Hilary to guess first. Then, Eddy revealed that Brett's story about playing viola at 18 was the one he previously believed to be true, leaving Hilary's initial guess as a possibility, in addition to Eddy's guess. So, from Hilary's point of view, the odds of Eddy's guess being correct were statistically higher because he wouldn't have revealed if he had known Hilary's guess to be true. So, to maximize her odds of being right, Hilary switched her guess.
@Cal943 жыл бұрын

@@Cal94 basically think about it as the probability of your first guess being wrong instead of the probability of your last guess being right.
@tingleehoong5797 Жыл бұрын
@@fn_main Your argument has some point. However, all the Monty Hall problem relies on is actually a motive for Eddy to hint at brett's 2nd story being true, it does not depend on Eddy choosing the 3rd answer. Summary of Monty-Hall problem: 2 goats, 1 car behind 3 doors. Choose one door you think the car is behind. The door you didn't choose with a goat is opened. Switching doors after the reveal increases your chances of getting car. Answer proven statistically and through maths. In conclusion, your suggestion depends on Eddy remembering/guessing the correct answer, while Monty-Hall offers fixed probability for all choices of the sort, and it's chance of going wrong increases with the familiarity of Eddie and Brett. Since I guess Eddie and Brett did not meet before 15, I'd argue that Eddie does not have reliable clues to gauge the truthfulness of 1 and 3, and that your suggestion has a significant chance to be wrong, and that Monty-Hall's problem's solution is the best solution.

Just saying. The moment in 8:14 almost replicate the monty hall problem. I don’t know if it was intentional, but Hilary switching her answer is clever af.

No, not quite, Hilary, it was 4-5 years *after* the iron curtain had fallen. Hungary probably still looked mostly the same as before the curtain came down, though: splendid old buildings but worn out and dirty. The Communist regime in Hungary ended in October 1989. The Berlin wall opened in November 1989 and the first free elections since 1932 were held in East Germany in March 1990. Musically, there was a big The Wall concert in Berlin in July 1990, a few short months before the reunification and Scorpions came out with Winds of Change in January 1991. The hardliner Communist coup against Gorbachev was in August 1991. The Soviet Union gradually dissolved after that and Russia officially became the successor state to the Soviet Union by December 31, 1991.

8:27 Hilary utilising the Monty Hall problem. 😂 Always beneficial to switch when one of the answers you didn't choose is revealed to be incorrect (unless, of course, it's revealed in order to trap you, which - since it was Eddy who revealed it- wasn't very likely).

I did! I did! 😭😭😭 I left a violin in a taxi. And it wasn't even mine. I was borrowing it... Guuuhhh!! I never told the guy (owner) what happened, I just asked him to "sell" it to me... And so he did, I paid about 4K pesos and for nothing... As the taxi was driving away I realized "the violin!!!!!" and run after it as fast as I could but I could not reach it, it just disappeared 😭😭😭

In the last round, after Hilary gave the little comment about how touching his nose could indicate that what Eddy said was a lie, once Eddy begins to tell his story he touches the bottom of his ear with his hand and Hilary lets out a laugh. Did she realize that it was a sign that Eddy was lying?
