My favourite thing about this video is when Eddy says he's sure the Korngold symphony will grow on him. Not because I'm so extremely emotionally invested in the question of whether Eddy will *actually* ever grow to like the symphony (although personally, I actually prefer the symphony to the violin concerto), but because that's *such an* underappreciated sentiment in classical music: that some music grows on you - and some (great) music never does. Of course there will be pieces that you hear once and immediately really like, but some styles of music are less easily accessible to us than others (which ones is an individual thing, obviously, based on our preferences and what we're already familiar with and probably a million other things). I grew up playing Bach on the piano but always thought his pieces were boring and all sounded the same; it took me years until I started falling in love with his music. And my first experience with Korngold was so terrible that I refused to listen to anything by him for like three years. Now I'm a huge fan of his symphony and also like a few of his other things (like his symphonic serenade). I know many people who feel uncomfortable with the singing style in opera because it's so far away from what they're used to. Or people who think classical music is boring because they haven't developed the listening abilities necessary to hear the differences between, say, different Baroque pieces. All of that is *okay* though. That's why I appreciate Eddy so much for saying this. We need to establish more of a culture in classical music (and especially for people who are listening to classical music for the first time in their life) that it's not unusual or a bad thing if you hear a famous and praised piece of classical music for the first time and don't immediately like it. And also a culture of giving pieces a second and a third chance. There will be pieces that you'll never like (there are so many pieces of classical music that it would be extremely unusual if you really like every single one of them), but for a lot of them, you really do develop an appreciation for with more familiarity with the piece and its style (and possibly its score).
