Here is a short tutorial/how-to video that I made of myself showing the process of painting one of my Altoids tin paintings. In this particular instance, I painted an old barn relatively close to where I live in Boulder, Colorado. I am using oil paint, and the substrate I am painting on is a primed wood panel fixed into the lid of the Altoids tin with velcro.

1. How do you decide which colors to use? Do you have a standard palette or change colors based on the subject? 2. It looks like you have a lot of paint left over. What do you do with it? 3. Do you ever run out of mixing space? 4. How many brushes do you usually use on a painting? Do you have separate brushes for certain colors/values? 5. Do you use any thinners or mediums in your paint? Do you rinse your brushes in anything while painting or just wipe them? 6. What brushes are you using? I haven't found any brushes that I like, so some suggestions would be nice! 7. Do you do any other planning besides the sketch on the canvas? Notans, value studies, composition studies in a sketchbook, etc. 8. Do you make or buy your canvas? If you make it, what's your method? I tried this myself, and I had a lot of fun! I used canvas paper and a photo reference because that's what I had available. I'm planning to do more, so any tips you have would be great!

These are great questions! I would love to hear the reply from the artist. I noticed it’s 1 year and still no response 😬. Unless he made a video response.

I'm floored st what you do! I've plein air painted with easles in watercolor because I didn't want the mess of oils and paper towels flying allover the place You've discovered something may bring me back outside. I could use Golden Open acrylic or water-soluble oils by Windsor Newton. Thanks for making videos. Your an excellent artist by the way! "Hey the rains coming." "Who cares just close the cover!"

Nice! I have a can like that as well. I’m currently filling it for a couple with mini drawings and paintings as an anniversary gift. But it’s challenging for me to come up with ideas that fill the tiny canvas, but the possibilities are endless and I really like the concept of those mini paintings. How do you attach the paper to the lid if I may ask?

That was a beautiful painting. What is the size of the little canvas and the little Altoid? I got some canvas that I thought was that size and little boxes that are like those but it doesn’t close after I put the painting in it. I got 2 x3 inch canvases

likely a 2x3 since an altoid tin is slightly larger than that. The mini tins it would have to be a 1x2" canvas.

“It’s really just drawing and painting…” dude: duh. Not to be rude- but we watch these videos because we DONT know how to “just draw and paint.” So listen: I will check back- but I hope my harshness helps you make more “instructional” videos. That’s why we are here. I say that with love.

Since this 2019 video, I’ve made dozens, maybe even hundreds of videos which are shorter and more concise, with much more instructional content. The only thing is that they are all on Instagram and TikTok because that’s where I spend all my time posting. I do plan on eventually putting those videos here on KZbin, but it’s a huge task. Your comment is criticizing the very first painting video I ever made, over 4 years ago. I do realize this is not the best video, but it’s not the worst either. I had a lot of fun making it and learned a lot in the process. I suggest going to my Instagram page - @RemingtonRobinson - and watching a couple of the short videos I’ve uploaded on there.
