Learn how to use a limited palette in this video. This plein air oil painting was completed using Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Naples Yellow. It was definitely a challenge using Naples Yellow instead of something like Cadmium Yellow Light. I felt it important though to spread my wings and try something new. I used a masonite panel for my painting surface and had previously primed it with acrylic gesso. When I was on site I toned the board with some Burnt Sienna. Overall, I was pretty surprised by the sense of light I achieved using the Naples Yellow.
Thank you for watching the video.

I like it. It makes me realize I need to be a little looser, but still focus on the shapes in each area on the painting.

Nice video. I enjoyed the whole experience of finding a spot to paint, then seeing the study you painted.

Hi - Thanks so much for watching. I think it's useful in my videos, at times, to show how it can be tricky sometimes to find something to paint. It's a process and artists need to accept it.

Nice one Bruce I always am impressed by how quick they turn out . I am slower mostly due to the fact that I like details. 👍for working in warm weather. Sheila.

I really like this palette Bruce. To me it evokes those really hot days where the atmosphere is hazy. I don’t know, maybe it’s the humidity that causes that effect. We get them here in Brisbane (Aust) anyway. Not sure if you see that effect in Maine. Anyway, lovely painting. Thanks for sharing. Amanda.

I know what you're talking about. We've had a hot humid summer and the hazy, yet sunny days are interesting for painting. The Naples yellow really plays well with blues in skies to achieve an effect of haze.

I'm sure you've tried Lemon Yellow? It's a colour I use a lot mixed with Cobalt or Ultramarine (depending on depth) to get the sharpness of sunlit grass.

Yes....it's been a long time though. Thanks for the reminder. I definitely could see it being useful for sunlight on grass.

Naples yellow is not a pure yellow; it has pigment white in it, which may explain why you didn’t love working with it. Regardless, the result is beautiful.

Hi - Thanks for the compliment. Very true on the N.Y....and that's why I picked the palette I did...knowing I wouldn't get any saturated greens, but was interested to see if I could "create the illusion" by carefully using values around the green highlights to help with the effect of sunlight. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for watching.

I have a few times. Several years ago I was in Boston and liked to take random pics of pedestrians standing in the park, crossing the street, etc. I have some good shots to paint from....I like their candid look.....real life....not staged. Maybe I need to do a video of the process ...hmmm? Ideas, Ideas. Thanks for watching the video.
