Plein Air Painting Inspiration (Karoo, South Africa)

In this video I take you around the stunning Karoo region for a plein air painting experience. I took some time out to get outdoor painting inspiration. This region of South Africa has amazing plein air subjects everywhere. I show you a few of the paintings I did, what attracts me to a scene and what to look out for. I hope it inspires you to try outdoor painting for yourself.

I live in New Mexico (USA) and if you replace your Springbok with our Pronghorns, these scenes look surprisingly much like my home despite being on another continent and in the other hemisphere. Hi there! I just sub to your channel. Really love this kind of loose expressive-impressionist style. Also the colours. I have few questions, are you using artist grade oil? Cause I am struggling with student grade one - especially the yellows - they are too transparent and I have to put ton of yellow if I want yellow - that ends up in too thick mess. What are your observations on especially the yellows and perhaps what is the best cheap oil brand that have good quality yellow? Or what is the best tinting yellow type? I have try artist grade yellow and this stuff is like from another universe. Works and it is so strong even in small quantities.

In these lessons I use good quality student oils that are affordable for enthusiasts. Try Maimeri Classico (cadmium yellows) Also Van Gogh by Royal Talens or Georgian by Daler Rowney. Use as little mediums as possible- preferably none.. Also a bristle brush to handle oils easily. You should be fine with any of these.

@@MalcolmDewey I just watch few of your reviews of art supply :) I use Maimeri Classico primary - they are consistent and smooth paints across all colours, something student grade Pebeo or Lefranc & Bourgeois does not accomplish at all, often what comes from the tube is too thick, and medium is inevitable. For sure the Classico yellows are better than Pebeo ones, but compared to let's say Talens Rembrandt is like comparing day and night. Interestingly cadmium yellow from Rembrandt is in group 4 so it is a lot more pricey than standard group 1 colours.
