Here's a quick overview of Plex. I didn't go into full details about all of it's features and functionality like NAS support, cloud sync and their Plex Home Theater app. But make sure to subscribe as I will be doing more coverage after I build my new server. Plex and Chromecast... What a match. I've been using them together for some time now and they work flawlessly together. The Chromecast is great. I have one in every room. Pandora Radio, Netflix, and Google Music also stream really well on the Chromecast as well.

Something that you missed was that if you want your media files to show up it must match a listing from a service that Plex uses. I have a vast collection of cartoons and most showed up but not all of them. According to Plex some files must meet a check that requires them to be numbered 01, 02, etc - this didn't always work and some files required me to rename completely. I love Plex and I am not complaining but, it should just play my files without worrying if I named it right! That's why you see that pretty art you was talking about, its brought up because it was named correctly. Thanks for the Vid and Keep up the great work!!!

I stumbled upon Plex looking for an app that could stream mkv's to my PS3 over a year ago. Dabbled with XBMC years ago, but never got too into it. Since I discovered Plex I haven't needed to look at anything else. Simple setup, lots of convenient features, and support on several platforms. I haven't subscribed to plexpass yet, but I do look forward to using Plex with my Chromecast. I am also working on building a low power dedicated Plex Server.

Plex in general is awesome. Especially if you're a Plex Pass user (get first crack at new features). My wife and I were at Olive Garden; waiting for a table. Pulled out my phone and we watched an episode. Went to Florida on vacation last year. Brought my Raspberry Pi and streamed shows (via XBMC plugin for Plex). I don't have a Chromecast yet, but it's still pretty awesome just on its own.

I'm using plex for quite a while and also bought plex pass to support the plex team. It's a small thing but it's really handy especially for tv shows that plex tracks what I've already watched and also where I stop watching. So for example when I start watching something on my phone and come home and go to my samsung smart tv where a plex client is available, I can continue watching where I left it on my phone.

Been using Plex for a while now & love it. For new users though, you didn't really cover how it works - only showed the mobile app, not the server, web apps and home theatre apps. Also never mentioned to people how to get from DVD -> Plex.

Plex is just awsome! I discoverd it by accident a couple of days ago, and i allready have a year subscription on Plex pass. Have been useing Samsung Link up till now, and it sucks in comp. to Plex. The Samsung TV app for Plex is also great! Love the movie art AND theame music when entering tv-shows!

The big delay is mainly due to the plex media server having to transcode the movie to chromecast. If you can serve the movie directly theres almost no delay at all, if you have to transcode then install the server on a pc with a decent cpu.

Hey Armado, great video, but I have a question: Does PleX stream from your PC to your phone, and then from your phone to your Chromecast? Or does it stream directly from your PC to your Chromecast? Because I was thinking about buying a Chromecast, and I have a slow phone, and it won't be able to stream without lag.

XBMC and home streaming is also cool. Plus you can use your smartphone as a remote. I don't really care to use my other friends libraries since most of them don't have fast enough internet to stream 720p or higher video.

i use an app called Show Box which grabs links from the internet instead of shared libraries you can either watch the content on your device or stream it i personally stream it to a raspberry pi with xbmc connected to my tv thanks to an app called yatse it works with a chromecast too if you install avia

Plex is amazing, its just so ridiculously easy to set up it has a beautiful web interface (you should have shown that tbh) its running on my custom built nas server, its also a domain controller as well as running pfsense as my router. i dont really use it on my phone, the IOS app isnt free with plex pass so that's a bit of a bummer but i think the screen is too small on my iphone to bother anyway. i mainly watch it on my macbook and sometimes my desktop. we don't actually have a smart TV we still have a CRT tv so when dad upgrades that ill make sure he gets one with DLNA support at least so we can use plex on that. plex also works with ps3, so i could always plug that into the TV if he goes the cheap route. plex isn't really against any laws, perhaps the shared libraries part but im not a copyright lawyer so im not sure there so sorry i wont be sharing my library with you (im in New Zealand anyway so the playback would be slow to the US) oh and i forgot the best part its free! you can pay to get some extra features, its called plex pass. you dont have too, but i did just because its such an amazing solution and i wanted to support them.

Plex does NOT require a subscription. All the features shown here are free except for the one time cost of the app. (2-3 dollars). The subscription is only for those who either wants to support the plex team, or want to use their premium features like offline sync and early access to app updates etc. In other words, you don't need to pay a subscription fee. I love plex and use it every day.

My Amazon review of the chromecast is the highest ranked review. I listed Plex as the way to go, when it came to streaming your own content. At the time of the review, Plex didn't natively have chromecast support, but it worked fine, via Chrome browser.

P.S I setup tasker to auto search for a movie in Plex and then Chromecast it.. I just want the Plex search to allow tv shows in the form "Breaking bad season 2 episode 1" etc.

I prefer Plex. But honestly I've haven't used XBMC extensively. I've had both about the same time but Plex just seemed more fleshed out and user friendly.

animaleyezz tom sheinman I used XBMC for years and I have changed fully to Plex. Plex is much better if you have a server on your home network with your media on it. XBMC is better if you just have one machine connected to a TV or something simpler like that.

Plex works so much better on the roku. Faster and better video quality.

It's more stable because it doesn't have to contend with the radio's that everything wants to use in a phone. I share my library with my cousin using a roku and he loves it.

I am using plex but I am also having trouble. I have about 1,000 movies and TV shows of various formats. Mostly mkv,avi, and some MP4 but only 495 show up in the plex library. The ones that are not showing up are the same format of some that do show up. Do you have any tips?

Most of my files are 8GB+ you shouldn't have any issues. But this will also depend on your home setup/network.

Im getting just gray space where my movies should be on my android phone. Why is this? PS. When I try to sync it goes from, Updating sync information to, Syncing media to, Sync complete to, Device idle. If that helps any. I have no idea why this is happening. The videos on plex chromecast look a bit pixelated even though the sources are 1080p and I have the transcoder settings set too "make my cpu hurt".

+Max Power Hey Max, not sure if you've figured this out yet, if you are making your cpu hurt it probably means you are transcoding and thus probably reducing resolution. To play at maximum quality you actually want no transcoding. So you want to play at source quality.

Meh! The best 2 apps for movies and TV Shows are TV Portal and Showbox. No Chromecast support yet, but all movies and shows you want. In have them on my Dropbox ready to share.

If you use Avia, you can cast Showbox. Showbox paired with Avia in fact is the best app, but I still need to use Plex when I watch with people who need subtitles.
