Most of these russian post punk bands stem from an 80s band called Kino. One of the most influential russian bands ever. The lead singer Victor Tsoi died in a car crash at 28. People still graffiti «Цой жив», or “Tsoi lives” pretty much everywhere. Группа крови (Blood type) and Черный альбом (Black album) are essential listens. Just wanted to share if anyone wanted to know the godfathers of russian post-punk, if you are interested in this genre I highly recommend.

Learning Serbian seems to be going well, keep going! Also thanks for the rec, it's awesome and exactly up my alley. I second the suggestions to look up Kino, Molchat Doma, and would also recommend Buerak!

AVAA! Let the first russian post-punk listener cast the first stone for I will be "that guy" and recommend Molchat Doma. Their earlier albums almost present this condesed look at the late soviet era destitution that people were pushed into. It makes you dread that time but also make you feels terrifyingly nostalgic for the place you've never experienced. When a band is singing verses from a poem written by someone dying alone in the hospital and losing faith in humanity -- you know you have something special.

AVAA Small note, "почва" is pronounced with "ч" sound, which like ch in..."whiCH", so it's poCHva But love the review and your Russian is nicely spoken)

I love listening to singers in languages I don't speak, because I enjoy speculating what the song is about based merely on vibes, and then looking up the translation eventually. AVAA!

Professor Skye, you should check out Химера (Chimera), if you haven't before. They're a really important band for the russian punk/hardcore/indie/diy/etc scene, I think you'd like them

I’ve been moving away from English-language music-though I love it, I find it somewhat overrated. I used to create music in English, but traveling abroad deepened my appreciation for my Spanish/Latino heritage. As a result, I’ve shifted to making music in Spanish. Thank you, Skye, for sharing other voices.

Hey Skye, don’t know if you still read every comment but I think I heard you mention you haven’t listened to death grips? To me, death grips - ride’s delivery, the instrumentation.. the ethos (?) - are the logical next step of chuck D and the bomb squad (flav too of course) they’re my most favouritest group of all time, so please check em out at some point in your life! AVAA, bless

You know all those 21century, Gen whatever names yr giving music. All those styles were just called post punk, back in the day. So I think it’s pretty unlikely that you despise all post punk.
@jaedenklassen53292 ай бұрын
Such as? Think I would still mean post-punk in the context it's used now. Despise is too strong, I mean I dislike Talking Heads and Have a Nice Life and The Cure and most other music I've had introduced as such.
