What makes this song special is the *wordplay* in its title and chorus. It is hard to translate, but I will try to convey the feel of it. So the literal translation of the chorus is: We all run along the edge of the island All our lives run along the edge of the island We all live on the edge of the island Of the sharp razor The Russian word for _of the island_ (ostrova) is the homophone of _sharp_ (ostrogo). So when you listen to the last line of the chorus, you suddenly realize that all the previous occurrences of _the edge of the island_ actually mean _the edge of the sharp_ ... _razor._ These are my attempts to recreate the feel of it in English: We all thought we drew a lucky ticket All our lives thought we drew the lucky ticket We all hoped we drew the lucky ticket -- The lucky ticket for parking at a wrong place We are all struggling in this world All our lives struggling in this world We are all living in this world -- In the swirled turbulence tearing us apart Just out of our reach we see a mist We see the beautiful mist We talk about the mist -- The missed opportunities

No disrespect meant, but how they could be the defining genre, if they doesnt invent anything, it's just a retrospective to post-punk, or russian post punk. I like molchat doma, they're really good, but I don't get the hype. If it's like a revelation for you, maybe you don't know that there's dozens of similar bands here in Russia or CIS countries - Motorama, Petlya Pristrastiya, Buerak, Trud, Spasibo, Chernikovskaya Hata - etc etc. For 80s soviet sound there is Маяк. Listen to 'Alyans - Na zare', or late 'Kino' albums if u wanna know where's the origin of this music. I mean Interpol, for example, at least brought their own sound to post punk, but these guys completely long to sound like a typical 80s band; I dont say that it's a bad thing, but it has nothing to do with 'defining genre'.

@@joe_chill1060 at first, toaster' post said that molchat doma will be the 'defining genre of 2020's'. I said that it can't be that way because there's nothing new in this music. E.g. imagine if nowadays there was a band which tried to copy Beatles' sound, and they did it very well, and suddenly they become popular... But it can't define genre for a decade. Though music evolution is kinda periodic nowadays, there still must be some innovations in style. Like dubstep has dub reggae + 2step garage in it, synthpop has some postpunk, some disco etc. Here we deal with CLASSIC sound which we probably heard thousands of times (as I say in my 1st comment).

Weirdly, it's something that sounds exactly like a mix of Ploho and Дома. Exactly what I had in mind when I imagined them 2 playing together. Not to mention Егор dropping down to Виктора voice range. Had a hard time differentiating their voices at times. Great piece.

@@richardkmoch2208 Yegor's voice is warmer, more reminiscent of a singer and has a slight Belarussian accent. Viktor's voice on the other hand can be quite sultry, if you can say that about a male voice, and is a little more coldwave than post-punk.

You must do a show in Czech city (3rd largest) called Ostrava. The chorus in this song have the same pronunciation as the city. And as a czech I mostly understand only "Ostrava naša"... for me it's just song about that city, cuz it have dark past with coal mines and black smog ... just industrial center.. I just love it :D
