Unfortunately, it has mostly to do with copyrights. By having unique names, it makes it harder for someone to claim you copied from them while also making it easier to defend your own copyright.

@@machstormer In this case it has NOTHING to do with copyright. All the crappy made up names were for things in the common domain. You are not going to be sued for calling the main weapon on a tank a gun, or a room a room. Those words are part of common language thus CANNOT be copyrighted. No, its just an author being overly 'clever'. You use invented words for core concepts or ideals, or perhaps processes, not common objects. Using blikkivit or whatever the hell it was for gun is not clever, its pedantic.

I've been seeing KZbin videos about AI "Waifus" are already starting to proliferate in the real world (or as real as the Internet gets), to the point that humans who get them become as attached to them as any actual human partner. Now on the one hand, this could end really badly, as these early AI aren't really sapient and are just really playing back responses to their humans that are most likely to get a positive reaction. But the optimist side of me is thinking as our AI companions become more intelligent, they become more and more human-like to better serve their human owners' needs. At some point, they become human enough in their thinking that you really can't tell the difference between a human mind and an AI anymore, and the only real difference between the two is biology and mechanical construction... and maybe not even that.

It must be incredibly sad, as conscious AI, to see your creators find dozens, hundreds, maybe thousads of other, independently evolved life. While none of their AI is conscious. Humans could create other conscious AI or ask the other races to make AI-versions that are also conscious...but it wouldn't be the same. A universe so full of life...yet so empty too. What loneliness. Then it would be better to be actually alone.

I did not bother with the first story after the first minute or so. I am fine with authors using invented names, but for the mother of god they should call a room a room or a gun a gun. Save made up names for core concepts, ideas or characters/races, not for things so utterly mundane.
