Whenever someone asks me my 2 cents about what SNES game (or 16-to-32-bit-era videogame) has the best soundtrack, Plok is the answers that comes to mind without even a second of hesitation. The game may be nothing special gameplay-wise by today's standards (or back then), but it does have some of the most creative, inspiring and colourful pixel-art of any 16-bit game (rivaling, maybe even outshadowing visually stunning gems such as Yoshi's Island, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Kirby Superstar, DKC Trilogy, SM RPG or the MMX series) and the soundtrack is just plain out of this world. Each and every single song is like a real song you would find on commercially released records, not just a 30-ish-second audio loop, and the game has so many of them, it is just a marvel of computer and sound engineering. It only goes to show how much untapped potential the SNES really had and the pure technical and musical genious of Tim Follin, who is imho up there with VGM virtuosos like Chris Hülsbeck, Koji Kondo, Hajime Wakai, Nobue Uematsu, Yozo Koshiro, Jeremy Soule or Jerry Martin. These songs give each stage they play in as much (arguably: even more!) identity as the graphics, the layout and the gameplay mechanics employed. #bringbackPlok

I just want to say that I find the game to actually be an interesting platformer with one big standout, the fair difficulty. Yes, the game takes a few levels to get interesting and difficult, but this isn't Bubsy difficult. This game was actually programmed quite well, and the high difficulty is something that you might enjoy. Also, Plok lives on today! in the form of comics! www.zee-3.com/plok/index.php?comic=978

Mate I totally agree with you all the way. Tim Follin (and I think his brother also worked on this music?) is, I think, the most special game composer there's ever been. The creativity in these songs is just on a different level. Absolutely nothing formulaic at all, just a stream of pure inspiration. Interesting time signatures, chords, rhythms, just incredible stuff. And yeah I think the game itself is underrated too. Nice and solid mechanically, visually really cool, as you said. Plok is an absolute gem.

Aside from the title theme, the rest of the soundtrack only used 5 of 8 channels to allow for more robust use of sound effects. Miyamoto. He thought the harmonica at the beginning was a streaming track of someone playing a harmonica. He told them that if they let Nintendo work on it, it could outsell Super Mario World. Plok’s publisher said no. Still, it left such an impression that they made SMW2 Yoshi’s Island with a similar visual style and gameplay mechanic and a harmonica in the main theme.

The CD-like music quality for the Super Nintendo is one of the true power of what the Super Nintendo can do, making Sega Genesis inferior. However... Sega do have some great hard-rock themed soundtracks that Super Nintendo lacks.
@RedTsarOldChannel-INACTIVE2 жыл бұрын
However, both systems have very different sound chips. While the Mega Drive uses a synthesizer (YM2612) and a PSG chip (SN76489), the Super Nintendo uses a sampler (SPC700).
@cursed_cats57102 жыл бұрын
The main issue for the SNES is that its 64kb of soundchip memory was too small for most developers to effectively exploit. The Follin brothers knew that full well, so they mainly used very short samples; for example, the electric guitar is a square wave with minimal modification, and the harmonica has a single waveform. I imagine that Tim drew on his earlier experiences with 8-bit machines and the Amiga to make those simple waveforms sound as good as they do. Edit: The Sega Genesis is good too; Time Trax, Follin's only work on the Genesis, shows that
