Today, like any other day in Mammoth Lakes was filled with plenty of adventures from digging out, snowed in vehicles to continuously, moving massive amounts of snow follow along as Sadie bud and I tackle the daily challenges. We are prepping for major snowfall on Monday and Tuesday. it looks to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 to 5 feet coming in we will be extremely busy for the next few days battling the snow. Stay tuned for the action because it’s coming.

I skied MT Baker during the 1998-99 1140" world record snowfall..... Twas amazing! Even Alpental, at 5400', got to a 320" upper mountain snowpack.... Baker hit 340" Two avalanches came down the OB Rumble gully, burying three skiers. Bodies not found till summer. There was a 20' crown (fracture line) that was visible for weeks after.

It depends greatly on where you measure the snowfall, there is a strong rainshadow east of the crest. The ski resort gets alot more snow than the town and the town gets alot more snow than Crowley Lake/Hiway 395. There are big variations even within the town the higher parts of town probably get 30% more snow than the lower parts of town. I'd say the ski resort will easily exceed 700" this year, the higher parts of town might exceed 700" if March is wet but Crowley Lake/395 will fall far short of 700". The greatest annual snowfall in the US is 1,200" at Mt Baker ski area in Washington state and if you put a snow measuring station in the coast mountains of Alaska you might record at 1,500 to 2,000" of snow in a year. I don't think any city has recorded more than 500 or 600 inches of snow in a year so if 700" is officially measured in town than that would be the greatest snowfall in a major population center. The small towns of Soda Springs, Bear Valley and Kirkwood have more snow than Mamoth Lakes because they sits on the wetter west side of the mountain so Mamoth Lakes is defintely not the snowiest small town in the nation.

At this time line 27:08 I am watching the loader operator that you have hired. He’s good and safe. But, snow removal is all about production. I don’t know how long he’s been operating one, but he needs to be moving twice as fast. As you know, we do snow removal here in Northwest Montana. Almost, on a daily basis to. We also have the exact same loader that you have and we have 2 that are bigger. He needs to be going a lot faster when he’s pulling in and dropping his bucket to get a bucket full of snow. You know as well as I do it’s a dance. Between your feet and your hands. And your head had damn, well better be on a swivel. A good operator, and I made a good one is worth his weight in gold. He can make that loader sing. I can. But I’ve been operating heavy equipment / logging equipment ever since my dad started me out running a 960 Prentice Log Loader. With a live heel. When I was 12 years old. And today I’m 62. I would get out of school and like nearly all the other boys that lived up here in this part of Montana we worked in either logging / sawmill or on family owned Ranches / family owned Farms.
