My vent pipe is leaking, if I capped it and switched the water on could this work or is it important to have a vented pipe to the water tank?

I love these diagrams, much more informative than real time explanations. I think you should go the whole hog and produce a complete diagram. As above + central heating - pump, diverter etc. Great

The difference between an Indirect and Direct hot water system is that a Direct system does not have a coil in the cylinder, and so the water used at the hot water outlets (taps/showers etc.) is the same water that is run through the central heating system. They're not used very often and are more likely to be found on a hot water only system (no radiators attached) or on a cylinder that only uses an Immersion heater and has the flow and returns capped off.

Good video, but here is a query an indirect cylinder 1" feeder pipes to the coil, very hot,but water coming out of cylinder is tepid, There is an automatic bleeder valve just beside the instantor elbow fitting heading into the top of the coil, same temperature at the bottom of the coil, the mystery is why the water in the 40 Gal insulated cylinder is not getting as hot as the pipes servicing the coil Thanks if you can help. Bill.

I find this interesting compared to the North American design on this side of the Atlantic. Most water heaters on this side have a replaceable anode rod to try and delay rust. Is there an anode rod in your tanks?

Note: the cold water feed pipe to the hot water cylinder is the "expansion pipe", the pipe going up and over the cold water tank is the "vent pipe"

A plumber shut my hot water off as "the vent pipe" was leaking, I don't know what to do as the plumber did not leave a number, what can I do? Is the vent pipe important or can I put a cap above the hot water feed? I really need help as I don't have money to call a plumber out and I need hot water, is this to big for diy? Or do you have a video link? Thank you

Urgent help required please!! I have the same system in the video above. The cylinder is in my bedroom, and the pressure from the hot tap in the bathroom is really low. I have a single impeller stuart turner pump, with built in pressure switch. I put the pump on the outlet of the cylinder but all it does is feed water back through into the tank above, via the expansion pipe. Should I put the pump on the inlet to the tank instead? Thanks anyone for the help.

I have a few solar panels and have seen a 12 volt Heating Element i would like to use to dump heat into my copper tank. The element has a 1" BSP thread. Would there be a gland to enable a hole to be cut for a item like this? I would attempt to fit it as a Willis heater but there is a 240 volt one already installed!

Yes, any hot water outlet. Unless the shower is electric - in which case the shower may only have a cold feed to it and will heat that cold water on its own.

Hey Plumberparts, I've got a vented indirect system. I've removed the boiler and capped off the pipework to and from the coil so that there is no central heating system. The pressure coming out of the hot and cold taps is very poor at best since doing this. I am fitting a new bathroom suite and want to feed it with mains cold, how can i make sure the pressure coming out of the mixer taps will be sufficient considering the hot pressure is practically non existent? Thanks

Hi Great videos. I have a query around moving my hot water cylinder 4.5 metres to the left of its current position. Is it ok to have the new vent pipes which will still run up verically to the loft lengthened to then run horizontal 4metres to the CWS tank before dipping down in as usual?...as it's difficult to move the CWS to be directly above the new hot water tank position. quick question, i've fitted a stuart turner 3.00bar monsoon whole house pump but yet to fit it to a surrey flange, my hot water pipe is set away from the immersion tank and T's off for the vent up to the loft water tank. without the surrey flange the pump shoots the hot water up the vent pipe and straight into the tank in the loft, the only way around with fitting the flange is to fit an elbow to the vent pipe and run that to the top of the surrey flange. i was just wondering if this was safe to do or not? great videos by the way, helped a lot in fitting the pump. hold tight!

Hi, firstly thank you so much for these videos, really helps explain things clearer. My problem is that I have a indirect immersion heater which powers the hot water. The hot water pressure is so low you can’t do nothing not even wash your face lol. I am thinking of installing a hot water pressure pump like the one you installed on one of your videos. However I am thinking of that really is the problem as I’m certain the pressure had never been this bad as I’ve had the flat for over 10 years. Do I go ahead and install the pump or is there a bigger problem? Could it also be that the immersion heater is blocked with muck and needs flushing if so can immersion heater be power flushed. Thank you

What is the boiler fed by on a vented hot water system, is a gravity fed system the one that requires a cold water tank and a feed and expansion - so two tanks in the loft?
@peglor
@peglor 7 жыл бұрын
On systems as described in this video there is a second tank in the loft, also fed from the mains, to ensure there is always water fed to the pump at the boiler and to keep the heating loop filled and pressurised. This is why the heating system has to be drained below the level of the coil before the coil can be disconnected. Since there's a continuous supply of water from the mains to both tanks, a leak from a tap and a leak from a radiator are equally damaging as they can leak as quickly as the house water supply allows. Radiator water leaking may well be nastier as when there is no leak the same water circulates around the loop all the time, so it tends to be pretty manky compared to what's in the taps.

Great video! A question for you, in my house there is a vented hot water system. The cold water tank is in the loft, the hot water cylinder is on the ground floor. I understand that the water in the outlet of the hot water cylinder will be at the same level as the water in the cold water tank. I'm redoing our bathroom and the current pipe work is 15mm diameter and disappears, unhelpfully, into the wall. I want to 'upgrade' to 22mm diameter piping. I don't really want to destroy half the house to remove the 15mm piping, but I can get to the pipe leading to the vent over the cold water tank on the 1st floor. Here's my question, can I add a tee here for hot water?

Pat....we are mental busy! Cut away the foam around the immersion to get a better look. Tanks don't tend to 'crack' in the traditional sense. love your videos , but i find 2 faults with this video ! no 1 the pipe you referred to as the expansion pipe in your drawing is actually a vent pipe ( the expansion pipe is the same pipe as the cold feed to the cylinder and should not have a valve on it eventhough most installations do have the cold feed valved! no 2 the hot distribution pipe should run horizontal for at least 18 inches before it vents ! this is to prevent what is called one pipe circulation ! dont mean to offend you im just making a comment!
