Two questions Can all vents be combined so that there's only one roof penetration (so less chance of leakage in future decades)? Is it possible to vent on the side of a house somewhere so there aren't ANY roof penetrations?

Hi Bob. You ask an exceptional question that, as a Building Official, have only been asked twice now in my career. I have seen this (combining all vents) done once at a custom home in Pebble Beach and as you can imagine, it was done for aesthetic reasons; and I like your idea of less penetrations/less leak concerns. Section 904.1 of the California Plumbing Code (if you are in CA); and the Uniform Plumbing Code (if your state has adopted the model code), allow for vents to be combined, with provisions. Regarding your second question; there are no provisions preventing plumbing vents from penetrating the side of a house; as long as they maintain the required horizontal distances from windows and doors and vertical (above) windows and doors --- and clearances such as 3 feet from property line, plus 10 foot above ground. As an extra precaution, I would double check with the Planning Department if you are terminating vents in places other than the roof. Planning Departments often regulate aesthetics. I hope this helps. Thank you for asking the question. Take care. -Jose M

@@CBO.online thank you very much for that explanation. I have a residential home in Texas where they have a single plane sloping roof (covered with solar panels) and have a chimney on the high side. It's a tall chimney, over 8 feet above the roof line and the vent is about halfway up the side of that. There's no windows or air vents within code distance and it's (the sanitary vents) rain cap is about 26 feet in the air. My concern is actually the chimney flue violating code requirements being so close.

@@bobjoatmon1993 Hi Bob. I believe I visualize the scenario you describe; however, I am not certain I do and I don’t want to provide you with the wrong information. If you wish, please feel free to email me directly with a photo of the scenario you describe (my direct email: jm.wboard@yahoo.com). One important thing I wanted to mention, since you are in Texas; I believe that parts of the State of Texas are under both the International Plumbing Code, which is a bit different than the code I reference (the Uniform Plumbing Code); and the Uniform Plumbing Code. I would highly advice you to contact the local building department to inquire. The jurisdiction that you are in may also have local amendments to the code which could affect your work. I hope this helps. Jose M
