Place a hand towel under the shower valve and INTO the wall so when you remove the 4 screws and the plate.............you don't accidentally drop either into the wall itself. ALSO place a towel over the shower drain or close the drain if it's a tub-shower. Any small screws or parts you drop won't go down the drain. Thank me later

As a new homeowner in 1985, I learned basic plumbing skills from my contractor brother in law. Back then most repairs were to galvanized pipe. I never mastered sweat-fitting copper, but now PEX is the standard piping material in my hood and simply snaps into place in the fitting. My brother in law has been gone for a while, I can't help but think handling toxic materials shortened his life span. Plumbers are scarce in my part of the world and some (not to slander the trade) take advantage. I really appreciate you tube presentations like this one, they give me the confidence to "DIY." I'm retired now, and it means I have little choice. A $40 part and tools I already have vs. $500 for a plumber who mysteriously takes a day to do what was done in this video in 30 minutes. Thank you, thank you. And some credit goes to Price Pfister for using the same cartridge in most of its mixers and using a design that does not require specialty tools.

Thank you, I replaced the cartridge, but the water was consistently running from the shower faucet. It was those o rings stuck in the back. If those rings are still in the back of the pipe the cartridge won't fit tight and the water will run through even in the off position. I wouldn't have known this without your video! Thanks😊

Hey man.. thanks for narrating your knowledge. Very thorough. I had to make a Saturday repair due to the water not shutting off. After disassembling I did discover rust. Magnet assisted in the retrieval. I decided to seek KZbin and watched yours. Thank you very much for the step of purging. I did NOT the LAST time. This cartridge only lasted 5yrs. I DID PURGE and tons of debris came from my cold side. 50yr old galvanized pipe must be nearing the end. HOWEVER, I thank you because I would not have and certainly would be battling this situation sooner than normal. PURGE PURGE PURGE! Thank you!

Very nice video. I have also change my cartridge also. I did all of all talk a towel around the valve before removing and installing. My fingers are not quite as flexible as they used to be and I could definitely tell you I was going to lose a screw or two down the back of the wall. I know you are much younger but for the guys who have that clumsy feeling in their fingers. I also like the way you pointed out which direction the cartridge goes in I believe I have mine in backwards and I will change it but the second the water is turned on it hot. When I took it out the hot water only woodwork when I pulled the handle all the way up. Now the hot water is on the second you move it up just at half inch. I will turn the valve aroun. Nice video I have subscribed. Thank you

Great video, especially about the water temperature control. Why do you need the grease? Also, when I replaced the original valve due to leaking my new one leaked within a year. The old washers were indeed stuck in there. My father in law also installed the cold and hot backwards and when I put the vampire teeth in down with the new valve I couldn't figure out why I was scalding myself.....I wish I had seen this video before my first valve repair. I broke the plastic valve stem when tightening the handle because it was dripping, the handle came with it. Thank goodness it was in the off position. So the retired plumber guy at Lowes identified it was an old price pfister, and took me right to a new complete assembly, KARCI model 8P8-WS2-KA, I ran into problems because the new valve had two round holes with O rings where the brass body had the oval holes at the back. the old valve and the new valve where not the same length. I went back to Lowes and talked to the same guy, i tried to explain to him and showed him the instructs, he said " take the old valve out, put the new valve in" and he also said I didn't need the grease which I asked about, because other videos said the same thing as you, use the grease. Here is the point, my house is 14 years old, the shut off was at the street, not a problem, but the brass plumbing that the valve slips into has different depths, so the valve that came in the new KARCI was too short and had round holes at the back. It didn't work, so we called PF and they told us we needed a different valve, which was available and we ordered it. I was a different model number and I think we got it from Amazon, and got expedited delivery. the PF instructs show the different brass plumbing set ups, but if you are a DIYer, you may not get the significance. We finally figured it out, our brass set up was a 2 in depth, and apparently there are different depths which makes a difference when you go to install. I'm a woman and I think the man at Lowes might have not considered the rough plumbing or just dismissed me as a poor old lady. Live and learn. But knowing your brass pipe depth that the valve fits into was crucial to the success of the project. And I will go out and get the pipe grease. I'm competent at many home projects, but I have the plumbing curse. Thank you for the video but I hope I have saved someone else from this problem in the future. The new valve came, and it has the ovals holes at the back, and it is slighly longer. Wish me luck, or pray, which ever works.
@PlumbingExplained Жыл бұрын
There are two cartridges that look very similar by price pfister the one with the oval holes O rings is the older style the one with the round O rings is the newer style, I think you want the older style I would Google and see if there is a Ferguson plumbing supply near you, they sell to the public and they can help make sure you get the right parts and don’t waste more of your time. I think it’s great you make your own repairs, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.

Great vid, it might be what i needed. I have a setup similar to yours, Pfister, and theres no water dripping any where when the water is turned off. The problem comes when the shower is turned on. There is reduced flow coming from the shower head and there is a decent amount of water coining from behind the knob from the valve/cartridge/stem/sleeve area. Im thinking its the cartridge but im not sure. Could you give me your opinion? not holding your feet to the fire and you are not liable for anything i do. Thanks for the vid and thanks in advance for any advice.

I saw this video after I did the replacement. I need to know what I did wrong. After the installation, there is hardly any pressure. Why? Could I have tightened the four brass screws to the valve body to tightly? Surely, not. They just bottomed out. I did not go any further. Thebpressure was good before the work. My problem was I couldn't get any cold water. The temperature works fine now...just low pressure. What did I mess up? Could it somehow be that dial on the back side? I made no adjustment to that. As such, the knob doesn't turn as much as it did before I did the work. Maybe, I should get back in there and adjust that, at least. But,....the low pressure...what's up? EDIT: Great video. I subbed. Thanks for posting this. EDIT: The pressure magically corrected itself. Maybe, there was trash in the line? IDK.

Is it possible to flip the cartridge upside down without removing it? I have a Pfister setup as well, and my cartridge looks almost exactly like yours. I installed a new handle and cover and afterwards I can swear the hot and cold is now flipped around. I never removed the cartridge though. I looked at an old photo I took and the teeth are on top rather than the bottom like you state, so they are backwards. When I was locking the cover on, the threads did catch a few times and Im thinking maybe I turned it on accident. That or my memory is crap and it was always that way, but I can swear it wasnt.

Hi I replaced my price Pfister valve cartridge. I cleaned up inside and everything but my showerhead is still running water when the water is off. Any suggestions?
@PlumbingExplained2 жыл бұрын
I recommend you remove the cartridge and inspect the washers in the back make sure one didnt fall of or there isnt any debris in the back of the valve, while youve got the cartridge out turn the water on and off to the house a few times to clear out any debris that could be inside the valve or lines, if its still dripping after that then youve got a defective cartridge, you might be a good idea to have another cartridge on hand for when you do this. Buy one and if that cartridge is infact defective just put it in the case of the new cartridge and return it tell them it was defective.
