Can't express how much I appreciate this video. We broke this piece in our shower handle causing us to not be able to turn off the water in the shower. Unfortunately, we had to shut off the water to the entire house. I called a couple of plumbers, prior to finding this video, and no one could get to us before the weekend. This video was exactly what I needed! Found the part at Lowe's and used the video to support me in replacing the cartridge! Thanks for posting!

You nearly broke the shower by turning the handle clockwise :). Thanks for your video... I just needed a reminder of what I need to do. I had installed quite a few of these shower fixtures through the years owning property but sometimes we all need a reminder. The original comes in 2 pieces: 974-291 for the cartridge and 971 250 for the shutoff control/stem. The one piece as you stated is 974-042. Price Pfister has a life time warranty on your fixture and they will send you the piece(s) for free. Sometimes we can't wait so go to HD or Lowes. I just replaced the cartridge and shutoff control/stem module and the stem where the handle slides over the stem doesn't seem to go over the stem. My only guess is that the inside of the handle has deposits through the years/decade.. which prevents the handle to fit properly; and their recommendation is to clean out the inside of the handle. Anyone have that issue? Another alternative is to use a Dremel to down size that plastic stem. Well ... I'm just trying to see if the public has any issues with the handle/stem. Thank you again for your video. One other thing is that you can always fix the cartridge by replacing the 2 'O' rings and there is a large 'O' ring on the shutoff/stem module.

Do you know the 'model' name of Pfister shower trim? I have the exact same trim, and only the handle broke off (the cartridge/valve is fine). But I need a new handle that screws into the last trim piece you added, and I am not finding it anywhere as I don't have a model number or model name. It handle design is the same design as part S10-320, but that part number is for combo tub/showers with 3-handles in stead of one. I thought I had kept the box from the install years ago, but no luck finding it in my over-stuffed storage building.

I worked in a plumbing supply for 29 years and became very familiar with all these parts . I remember when we ordered parts from Price Pfister I noticed the parts kept coming in different from them every time we got an order . I alerted my boss that he check into why every time we were getting parts they were different from the usual parts we used to get . What happened was Price Pfister started a line that was made especially for Home Depot that used similar but slightly different parts. So Price Pfister was catering more to Home Depot than to the smaller plumbing supplys that supported them at the start . I have the same shower valve that was in the video and the plumbing supply version has a 2 piece Cartridge ( the pressure balance cartridge that went in the back and the cartridge that turned it on and off went in front of that . I tried the one piece cartridge and it turned stiff from day 1 and that's because there's no waterproof grease between the discs in that cartridge to make it turn easy . In the plumbing supply version you could actually see the grease between the discs that rotated as you turned the cartridge on and off . My boss wound up getting rid of the Price Pfister line because of all the different parts . It became really funny when people would buy a Price Pfister product from Home Depot and then when they needed a replacement part they would come to us and the part we would have is totally different . It would look the same but the parts they put in the Home Depot stuff was made cheaper and I would explain that to the people . We would tell them to go back to Home Depot to get the part and Home Depot never did . Then they would come back to me to buy a new faucet and swore they would never buy another faucet from them . Be careful where you buy from .

2 issues you did not mention or didn't resolve. 1: cleaning out all the old sediment and coating on the inside of the valve body. And 2: putting some plastic grease on the 3 O rings that are accessible. This will increase the life of the valve cartridge and make it easier to turn. It makes a big difference to do both. I used a rag to wipe out the inside after removing all old O rings. I thoroughly wiped everything down and inspected to see that the body was clean. Then I ran my fingers up inside to make sure I couldn't feel any built up sediment prior to installing the new cartridge. Hope that helps. I suppose if you didn't have any of the high tech plastic grease you could use plumber's grease (stem grease). Not sure if it would last as long, though.
