Coolant is on almost all the time except when I'm recording so you guys can see better and I don't get my camera wet. The square insert works better for interrupted turning.

I'm not sure why you would put shims under the jaws on a rough piece of steel.

I'm guessing to give your tailstock a bit more influence over the jaw. Any alignment error is easier to remove when packing is used under a jaw. Alternatively you could reduce grip amount, but that would reduce rigidity.

La mayoría de las veces, los centros se realizan en un taladro horizontal. Si tengo que rehacer los centros, solo depende del material con el que esté trabajando. A veces tienes suerte y haces el trabajo usando los mismos centros y, a veces, el material te pasa por encima después del desbaste, por lo que tienes que rehacerlos.

Why the shim under your 4 jaws? Even on raw stock?

I do the same it's not only for protecting machined surfaces in this case it reduces stress caused by the four jaw chuck jaws at the live centre end.You can set the job up perfectly acurite at chuck end but if you take the centre away you can see a fair bit of runout.I don't think there is any chuck that runs parallel to machine axis perfectly if part is gripped along it's full length tightly.Only time you can get away with it is if you centre drill the shaft whilst in the machine.

Yes sir, any alignment errors in centering, are able to be corrected via using packing. Reducing amount of jaw you have engaging does the same thing, but sacrifices grip pressure. It's why you use smaller packing under 4 jaw to allow the component to move during truing smaller components.

It's not chatter. It's more of a lack of surface speed, but machine limitations and job size influences your max RPM. Its also fitness for purpose, hit the tolerance and surface finish requirements, the rest is ego.

@@ChrisMaj Und Du hast keine Abdrücke auf dem Stahlschaft seit 25 Jahren ❓Das Affengesicht hat die Bedeutung das man das nicht mit ansehen kann ❗ Das mit dem Auflageblech hat den Vorteil das es keine Abdrücke von den Spannschrauben gibt und andere diesen Stahl auch einwandfrei benutzen können ❗ Und so hast Du nach 25 Jahren wieder was dazu gelernt 😂🤣👍❣
