Let’s do it algebraically, x^2=4 x^2-4=0 x^2-2^2=0 Using a^2-b^2=(a+b)(a-b), we get (x+2)(x-2)=0 For the LHS to be zero, either x+2 can be zero or x-2 can be zero. This is because if one of the two is zero, the whole product would be zero as well. (Since 0*Anything=0) Therefore, there are two cases 1) x+2=0 or x=-2 2) x-2=0 or x=+2 Thus, x can be both +2 or -2, ie. x is plus or minus 2. Q.E.D.

@@fabihaafia4665 blud its not that deep. Its just that negative times negative is positive because on a number line, negative means going behind 0 toward the negative side. Here's the geometric proof: A square in it's most basic sense is a measure of the area enclosed with 2 equally sized sides right. So if I take a length of 2, move 2 up (positive) and then to the right (positive), I will enclose a square an area of 4 square units. Now if I do this, but the opposite way, 2 down (negative) and 2 left (negative) I will still end up with an area of 4 square units, equal to previous square. Thus x^ = 4 x = +/- 2

These are the sign conventions when multiplication/division (-ve)÷ or ×(-ve) = +ve (+ve)× or ÷(+ve) = +ve (+ve)× or ÷(-ve) = - ve (-ve)× or ÷(+ve) = - ve If we evaluate the square of (+2), we get, (+2)×(+2) = +4 And if we evaluate square of (-2), we get, (-2)×(-2) = +4 Multiplication of two negative numbers will give a positive value, as mentioned above. So when we square root ; √4) , we have two possible values as it can be the square of either +2 or -2, hence while writing value of square root 4, we mention both the possibilities. That is, √4 = plus or minus 2.
