Can't understand why I've missed this one until now! Super capture(s) of a superb loco performing at its best, Liam and Phil, with extremely smooth and accurate panning - so enthralling that I found myself twisting the chair round to stay with it! Best regards, Bob.

Sorry I haven't come across this one until now didn't "Royal Scot" flatten Shap!! Are you sure it WAS Royal Scot or was that a Pacific in disguise? Very different feel to the Coast sequences liked the going away shot and the "rumble" over the viaduct and some semaphore signals!! Always like those; yes, I know mas is more efficient, but... Anyway... This Is A Hit!!

Now run that by me again, but, in the dark of night - just imagine the sound, the sight of the opened fire box and the lighted carriage windows - and what would we have, a mythical dragon roaring through the darkened landscape stampeding the sheep and fluttering the hearts of young children wakened from their sleep. Thank you for such peerless footage. Bill

As usual, great photography and sound. Do you have a new camera, as the definition seems much sharper especially on full screen setting. I enjoyed seeing a steam loco running freely and easily at what must be close to its presently permitted maximum.

Probably the best steam video I've seen in the last year. Fantastic. (Very sad to see the poor old girl in a shitty BR scheme and without her bell. Bloody Philistines.). I will deffo look at more of your work...!

+Marsh Steam Videos™ I am very proud of him as are all of my family. ( even if we tease him when he wheel slips.) My grannie's plan was for him to retie at 75; he's 77 now and doesn't want to stop any time soon. I'll pass on the message. :) Ask me if there's anything else you want to find out. :)
@MarshSteamVideosTM8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply ! Good to hear he's not ready to hang his boots up yet ! I have quite a few videos of him on engines in the north ! I will make a private video and send it to you later on. Regards, Liam

+Marsh Steam Videos™ Thank you very much! I think he's only going to retire when he fails his physical. (that'll only happen in 2050 at the rate he's going) :) I should also probably mention that I have two accounts and these are both me.

Black smoke, pandering to the cameras for photographic effect or what? Because that is CRAP FIRING due to inefficient combustion and the unburnt carbons going up the stack, and a driver would be kicking the firemans arse! White smoke over the shoulder, look for grey haze, then nothing, and on with more coal. Little and often. Pressure dictates how many spades. Coal placement is important. Firebox back, sides, and a little to the front on a Scot. How do I know? My uncle Percy drove Royal Scot on the Euston expresses as a top link driver on the LMS and BR. That's how I know!
@highphysics36176 жыл бұрын
Yaay! Your information is welcomed. It always helps the viewing experience understanding what goes on. That's worth bragging rights!
@MrMoggyman6 жыл бұрын
My linage.....uncle Percy.....LMS top link driver on expresses from Euston, a 'Wessy' (formerly of the LNWR), distinguishing features....a bright red cravat with white polka dot spots the size of five pence pieces made off in a barrel knot worn everywhere (on and off the footplate), large moustache, cloth cap....driven about all the Princess Coronation (PCC) and Royal Scot Class locos, most of the Patriots and Jubilee Class, and a good many others on LNWR/LMS/BR, knowledge and experience astronomical including driving and firing requirements for many locos, plus their entire service and maintenance histories, astonishing. Loves? The PCC Big Lizzies, he drove them, he loved them like his children....was on the footplate in the 1930's on the streamlined PCC's...a great fellow and railwayman, always informative to a young lad captivated by steam locos; uncle Ted.....from cleaner on LNER to senior instructor at BR, done steam/diesel/electric, took out the diesel 4000 Kestrel (most powerful diesel on BR at that time) on her trials hauling 2000 ton coal loads from Shirebrook Colliery to High Marnham Power Station, had to go to York to show North Yorkshire Moors Railway crews how not to make smoke on the station....why.....as he said 'Because nobody else knows how now!', been all over BR network including Shap and a lot of the network now closed or completely gone, took me underneath Kestrel in the engine pit at Shirebrook aged 7, lovely railwayman and sadly missed; both grandfathers 45 year veteran steam locomotive drivers on GCR, LNER, and BR, both retired around 1962, many tales; three other uncles firemen on LNER and BR. I learned a little bit from them as a lad. Railwaymen, it is not a hobby, or even a job, but a way of life. Black smoke....poor firing, the learners mistakes......something a green horn would do the first day on the footplate. Not expected on Royal Scot. The crews on that loco were the best on the LMS. Respect that those who handle her now. She can storm up Shap without that mess in the hands of an old hand fireman. Firing is an art. All engines are different, with different characteristics. The old hands knew how. The new hands still have to learn. Steam locomotives? Love them, always have, always will. In my blood forever! But for a handful of decades I would have joined them all. Sadly missed all of them. After this life, and by the grace of God, I will return in another time to take up my place amongst them, the steam locomotive footplate enginemen. Good Enough for bragging rights? Hardly. Never stood on the footplate of a UK loco. In another life I will.

My mate was a fireman at a mainly goods shed on the Midland, firing Garratts, 3fs, 8fs etc at normally 10mph. If you get a few beers in him he would tell you storeys. Mostly how they got a train stuck across a particular crossing gate. He got pulled onto an express because the fireman fell ill, a Jube. The driver spoke to him, and he said a driver had never spoken to him before (culture). He told him respectfully he'd never fired a Jube. The driver said, now look son, uphill ... shovel in as much as you can, downhill and flat just hang on because I don't want it to shake you out, we have timetable. Such are our stories.
