Nice review. A Toyota Tacoma would die pulling up that hill. I had one, I also have a 3800 pound travel trailer and it was brutal pulling that thing. I now have a 2021 Silverado 1500 with the 3.0 Duramax and its amazing. night and day difference...

My GMC Denali is a 2017 and is very quite and nice to drive. I down sized from a 3500 and miss the room, but this smaller truck works very well, and like you said the turning radius is wonderful. My family grew up and we got out of pulling a big toy hauler to a small quad trailer and a few runs to the dump. The highway mileage is much higher than advertised. I had four adults on a three hour ride with the bed full of items for long weekend. I am 6'3", the tallest, and everyone was comfortable. Anyone larger than I am might be uncomfortable driving this truck because my shoulders and butt barely fit the seat, and leg room is just enough. The riders in the back seat were about 5'5". In the first snow of the year of 6 inches, the truck drove very well. The negative part, my truck has 79K miles and the transmission needed replaced along with the cooling fan bearing. Thanks for the video.

Awesome video! I've been researching both the Canyon and Colorado with the 2.8 Duramax. From what I've seen, this truck is the perfect balance for a daily driver and weekend warrior who tows small trailers, boats, campers, etc. Thanks for this video!

Good, honest review. I have one of these as well, but haven't towed with it yet. My average is about 26-28 mpg, and my best so far, in 4000 miles, is 32.5! This truck replaces my 2011 two 2 Liter Cheater, AND my 2006 Chevy HD crew cab. This Canyon is SO much nicer to drive, but I do miss the interior space a bit. It's a great compromise, and I am very happy I bought it!

Finally the smaller trucks are getting diesels here in the US! I'm currently driving a TDI sport wagon and need to get another truck or sprinter type. I usually pick my car/truck on drivetrain and that GMC is really cool. Nice work in the mileage test too.👊🏻

i got a 08 silverado 1500 5.3 and i tow a trailer juss like that about every weekend and it really sucks when u hit a hill with it on the interstate if i have the cruise set at 65-70 it will hit 4k-4500 rpm all the way up the hill and sometimes temp goes up more then it shud so was juss thinking about how this 2.8 wud do i kno this torque is way more then mine at 2k rpms whats ur opinion vs a 1500

+Travis Reynolds I've had a lot of the Chevy 5.3 trucks over the years and it's a great motor. but it did seem like the diesel even though it's a small diesel towed really good at very low RPM and at a high speed I would say it tows better than your older Chevy.👍

Nice review! I have a '17 Canyon SLT crew cab long bed 4x4 with 5K miles on it so far and it has been great. These things love to run at 1,800 to 2,000 rpm in unloaded highway cruising. This is very common for diesels of all kinds. There is something about 1,800 rpm as their efficient torquey sweet spot. I easily break 30 mpg at 1,800 rpm and 70 mph on the freeway. I had one all 60 to 65 mph 35 mile run with no wind or traffic, cruise set, flat road, it got 42 mpg! Crazy. I let the "B" tripmeter run since it was new, the total average economy stands at 25.2 mpg in 60/40 mixed highwayis/ciytish driving at 5,000 miles. It is definitely getting better with break in as it has been climbing out of the 24s for awhile. The worst it does unloaded in snotty stop and go heavy traffic is the high teens, which is not bad. Most FS trucks can barely match that on the highway. The low down power these make may not win the 0-60 races, but it is always right there, and so usable in actual use. The diesel truly is a cool power train in this truck - efficient and yet it has the balls to do some work when needed. Using it as a daily driver and really enjoying my Canyon, glad I bought it.

How do you think this truck would do with a 22’ box, still 7’ wide, at a loaded weight of 5,000 pounds? I’m thinking about getting a camper with this truck. I already have the truck and love it. Thanks for the towing review!

This engine isn't an Isuzu, it's a reworked VM motori 2.8, also used in the Jeep Liberty CRD. I'm looking to buy a Denali Canyon Diesel, tried it but didn't try it hooked to a trailer. I'm not impressed by the mpg while towing... Might have to try it with my trailer before deciding to buy.
@pmutah7 жыл бұрын
+ProbeGT2 thanks for the comment yeah I wasn't sure if it was Isuzu. The VM motori 2.8 seems like a really good engine. I think the towing gas mileage would be better over a longer test I basically drove it up and Canyon which is going to be pretty hard on the gas mileage and it was Towing almost 5,000 pounds.
@ProbeGT27 жыл бұрын
Well the reliability wasn't bad but the engine had thermostat problems wich caused severe engine damage if it was not fixed before the problem happened. I tow a 6.5' x 12' enclosed aluminium trailer wich loaded weighs about 3500 lbs. The load os small the main question I have is if the engine will get into overdrive and gives a good fuel mileage or stick in 5th gear and drinks as much as a small gas v6. Curently I'm towing it with a 2008 V8 VW touareg and on the highway I'm getting around 18.5L/100k in summer and 21L/100k in winter. I don't mind the 170hp difference with my VW all I want is the best fuel millage possible, good torque, low noise and good driving feeling.
@masontaylor13046 жыл бұрын
The CRD had egr problems and rocker/lifter problems(because of the egr) I hope they fixed that but im pretty happy with my jeep. Averages 28 mpg lifted with 30x10

I have almost the same trailer set up as you do, only I run about 3,500 to 4,500lbs. I travel long distances with my trailer and need to cover a lot of ground so I am curious what your impression of the 2.8's ability to maintain 70 - 75 (or 80)mph on the highway (obviously not climbing grades). Thanks, great videos on the Canyon.

Miles Allen thanks for the comment. the diesel engine was able to maintain speed very easily I was really impressed at how well it did Towing. it feels like a bigger truck with a V8 .

what size is the trailer ?
@milesallen69817 жыл бұрын
7x14, all aluminum, 1,550Lbs curb weight I went and hooked my trailer up to a '17 Colorado at the dealer last night to see what it could do for myself. I scaled the trailer prior to going and weighed in at 3,250lbs. After hooking it up to the truck off we went to see what it could do on the flat Texas highway. Up to 45/50 it was great, lots of torque and the truck felt fine, 50+ you could start feeling the lack of horsepower even though it has plenty of torque, it eventually ran out of steam at about 60. The truck was also progressively unstable at 60+ with the trailer starting to suggest to the truck where it wanted to go. 60ish is maxed out for this truck/trailer combination. I have to say I was disappointed with the truck, albeit its only a 1/4ton. My Jeep Grand Cherokee with a uni-body was just as, or better, handling the 3,250LBs. I'm off looking for another non-1/2 or 3/4 ton tow vehicle. Thanks to all who have provided opinions.
@nilknarf15967 жыл бұрын
thanks for the feedback ! I have a frontier but wasthinking about a Colorado. I have a 7x14 enclosed that I tow a couple times a year. I found that it was also unstable around 60 without a WD hitch but was hoping to avoid going back to a fullsize. I live in the suburbs and parking can be a pain with those giant trucks they make today

The people that complain about the price remind me of the story “Doctor, my arm hurts when I move it like this. What should I do?” The doctor responds “Don’t move your arm like that." Of course it looks expensive if you can't afford it. Welcome to 2017 - trucks are expensive. Fortunately that $25k Taco has you're name all over it so go watch those videos.
@pmutah7 жыл бұрын
+urweetoddid thanks for the comment. you definitely get what you pay for in the car business. I'm not saying the truck isn't worth it I think it is. I just remember trucks that were smaller like a Tacoma being more like 25k so it's surprising how expensive the mid-size truck is now.👍
@Encourageable7 жыл бұрын
To be clear I wasn't directing my comment toward you. I liked your review. I was just pointing out that someone inevitably comes along and complains about the price. I was talking with a buddy that said he saw a King Ranch for $98k. Never thought I'd live to see the day a truck costs near $100k but we do.
@81806347 жыл бұрын
When I started truck shopping recently, I had the same initial reaction to the prices.. "WOW!". But, then I put some numbers into an inflation calculator, and surprise trucks really are not more expensive than they used to be. For the last 18 years I've been driving a 4x4 Tacoma v6 TRD that I bought new in 1999 for around $28k. In today's dollars that's just over $41k. Google "inflation calculator" and plug some numbers in, you will be surprised at how much truck prices really haven't changed.
@craighoffman81607 жыл бұрын
And new trucks have a lot more refinement and features nowadays. Recently rode in a 3.5L Ford Ecoboost, holy Hell that thing has stupid power :D The Ford was reasonably efficient too, averaged 20 mpg over a few hundred miles we had it, which is not bad. Honestly too much truck for me though. I have a Canyon Diesel, it just barely fits in my garage as it is, and it is much easier to drive than the FS truck. Garaging was important, after dropping 40K (bought the truck, not leased) I want that sucker protected in my garage...

Brandon Pierce yes, power recline on the seat too. Reminds me of my old Sonoma which would break seat handles all the time. I sat in the Denali at the autoshow and it was quite nice. The blue interior lights are a little strange tho
@pmutah7 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Tojcic overall I like the truck better than the Toyota Tacoma. they just need to improve on those few things and it would be perfect. I need to drive the 6 cylinder one with the 8-speed automatic transmission and see how that drives.
@nilknarf15967 жыл бұрын
then get an f150
@jessehernandez50436 жыл бұрын
Daniel Tojcic a flat floor in the rear is only possible on the F150 because the body sits higher above the frame, making the need for the transmission tunnel no more. Raises the center of gravity a bit though if it matters to you. In a way its like a body lift from the factory

This is actually a very good attempt by General Motors, but let's face the facts every time GM tries to compete with Toyota Tacoma it never works out and they discontinue the model. They will make this truck probably for 4 to 7 years and then they will discontinue it because it won't compete with the Tacoma end of story, do you remember how popular the Chevy S 10 and the previous Chevy Colorado was this new truck will fall to fate. just like the other attempts. It's a nice truck but when it comes to build quality resell value and reliability it will not compete with the Tacoma
@pmutah7 жыл бұрын
+ruger 1911 you're right Tacoma seems to always win the battle. but I'm glad GM is trying to compete with them.there keeping them on their toes. Thanks again for watching my review.👍
@jessehernandez50436 жыл бұрын
ruger 1911 might want to rethink the reliability claim on the tacoma. The new model already has two troubling recalls. The Tacoma will always win because its the Tacoma, regardless if it turns to shit. Just like how the new Titan will never be a great seller because the big three will always dominate their market, even though the Titan is a pretty solid truck
