There's not much reason to own a truck in the city i live in but you see lifted and loaded dodge ram after dodge ram here driven by rich stay at home moms and their teenage kids slapping curbs and parking across three spots because they cant handle the wheel base of their truck. I don't see how it's a status symbol if 1/3 or North America owns a truck. You're just like everyone else by owning one. There's so many on the road and they all look the same, luxury versions don't stand out to me at all. With that said if I were to buy a truck I would prefer a premium trim , not for status, but because I appreciate the better quality materials and extra options. I think the high end Rams for instance have nice interiors for a truck. Ps I live in northern Alberta where we get lots of snow and I can get around just fine with a lowered car with winter tires. 95% of people in North America don't need a truck or SUV.

I am from Western PA. So maybe I can offer some perspective on why this truck is appealing. First of all trucks of any kind are a goal people work towards and, other than a house, are the "I have finally made it" that a lot of my friends want to achieve. Secondly, when it comes to the idea of sub-par luxury, a conversation I had with a buddy of mine sums up the response of what I would assume the typical buyer thinks. He doesn't care about the luxury, that's the icing on top of the cake with this truck. He does care however that it is a GM product and that has a good engine, tow package, and the big rims. His reason being that he isn't a "libtard pussy" that needs all the "soft touch" (which is a phrase he laughs at) but appreciates a "well made truck."

I work in the oilpatch in Southern Alberta...am an operator. Around these parts most of us buy mid level trucks, the cheap ones just don't have enough features, but the expensive ones have way too many things to break. I put on about 75,000 km per year, about 30 % of that travel is on gravel rig roads. I almost bought one of the mid size trucks a few years ago, but the v6 just doesn't make enough power to do the job. I went with the smallest fullsize truck you can buy: GMC Sierra slt regular cab shorty with a 5.3 litre LS. Makes great power, yet is good on fuel. The other advantage to the small size of my truck is...much lighter in weight, so when the big diesel 3/4 and 1 ton trucks sink to their axles...my lil girl just floats on top. These GM/ Chevy trucks are super reliable...314,000km on mine...only issues have been front axles and suspension pieces, but as I do all my own repairs and get a great deal on parts...it's been very economical to run. Still have my 88 shorty as a back up truck...that old girl had 400,000 km on her when she got to retire from work.

For some people, the extra insulation for less dB’s, and smoother ride is very significant. My question here is, does this Canyon Denali pickup truck in question here by Zack, offer extra insulation and better suspension over the regular Canyon? Zack discussed the interior appointments and front grill, but what about the underpinnings?

Nope, the Canyon "Denali" is almost purely cosmetic and offers almost no functional upgrades. Really all you get over a loaded SLE is the 20" wheels, the Denali grille and a slightly nicer interior. In my opinion it's really not deserving of the Denali name. Most disappointingly, it lacks a ton of features that are common on most $45k+ vehicles. You made some great points about the positives and the negatives of this truck but I'd like to try and clear up your confusion as you stated both some fallacies and had some confusion regarding pricing. The Colorado ZR2 starts at $44k The Canyon Denali 4WD starts at $45k You kept referring to the Canyon as a "$48,000" truck but you included tax (self admitted) along with upgrades ($2,400 wheels) so right off the bat you're comparing apples to oranges. You also didn't factor in the Denali includes the Bose radio whereas the ZR2 does not - add in the $500 upgrade and you're at $44.5k vs $45k. The Denali is not really any more expensive than the ZR2. The next problem is that you didn't seem to realize the reasons behind getting the Canyon Denali vs the Coloraro ZR2 are the following: You don't want an "off road" truck which includes a 2" body lift with rock sliders instead of steps, you want "luxury" features like lane departure warning, cooled seats, chrome exterior appearance, 20" wheels with all season tires. The ZR2 is fantastic at what it does, it even rides better on the streets than the Canyon Denali but at the end of the day the Denali is the "Street" "luxury" truck, and the ZR2 is an off road monster. Getting in and out of the ZR2 for anyone under 6' is not easy due to the 2" lift and lack of assist steps. The Canyon, again, offers more "luxury" features for the street. At the end of the day, does the Canyon Denali deserve the Denali badge, probably not... but you're not making fair comparisons. Thank you for reading and considering an explanation for your confusion.

In the GM world the GMC name plate is set above above the Chevrolet trucks. If something is for sale someone will find a reason to justify buying something. We all are partial to certain brands for on reason or another. The appearance or many vehicles attract us to them, truth is if you want the best looking GM trucks (if chrome does not bother you) the Denali trim of the Sierra is a pretty good looking truck, does it have the substance to qualify it as a true luxury truck; Heck no but in most cases GM pick ups get deeply discounted when they sit on the lots. Most people will lease them if they can't buy them outright and then they will get offered on the used market at what they are really worth. Many people can't clearly explain why they gravitate towards trucks and SUVs. While some people can't come right out an say why they want a truck the benefit of the added ride height and visibility is one of the greatest benefits. If you subscribe to the survival of the fittest philosphy, the GMC products won't die off since they are based off of and share parts with the higher volume chevrolets and they are basically just a variant of the Silverado so it is not a loss to GM to offer the trim level. At the end of the Day even if they kill off the GMC then we would see an higher lever tarted up version of the existing trucks. As long as the market will indulge in the highly priced trucks they will be offered for sale by the Manufacturers, if they were not being sold in volume it would be the custom shops turning out truck with extra luxuries for the one who could afford it.

I've hauled drywall and plywood, firewood, helped friends move. It's a great mid-sized pickup truck. Lots of "get up and go" when you hit the gas too. You have your pricing all convoluted. For example you can’t price the canyon denali with the EXTRA 3000 dollar wheel option and the towing option included in your price and say the Tacoma starts at 35000. If you want to compare top trim levels, the Tacoma TRD PRO is waaay more expensive. Here in Canada the denali you are driving, goes for 53000 while the TRD PRO goes for 56000. These are both top trim levels. Also don’t forget, you can haggle a better deal through gmc than with Toyota plus Toyota doesn’t offer the same lease and finance options. So.......

I know this is an old review but I had to answer your question of who this truck is for. mind you the 2021 has improved a bit from 2019 and hopefully even more for 2022 when I get mine. after doing the math and looking at my needs I think the Denali canyon is for me. I need a truck for the cargo space but don't want or need a full sized truck, I don't go off road but I want 4x4 for winter and the ability to drive across fields at times, I want the luxury interior and I like chrome on black. as compared with the competition GM has by far the best interest rates in my area so the loaded Denali actually will cost me the same as a mid range Tacoma considering financing. and yes I will admit that I am a facility manager where a lot of people are driving luxury cars and SUVs as well so the image factor also comes into play and I'm at the stage in life where I should be driving a Denali, Colorado's are for kids!

Theres a 2018 for sale in my neighborhood that I'm leaning towards buying - owners asking $23k with 9k miles (less than half the price of your tester). I live in Hawaii where 10 year old Tacomas go for close to 30k and are probably one of the most common vehicles here. So in my case it wouldn't be to show off but instead to get a nicer truck that's different than the rest on the road. This review was totally based in reference to the price point which was kinda lame in my opinion. Just talk about the vehicle for what it is. Also seems like you're bashing people who own this truck. You wouldn't review an M3 and say "I dont get why you need leather seats in a sports car. They probably just want to flex on subaru owners who can hit a track just as fast for half the price."

I have a 2015 Canyon All Terrain. the size is perfect, it gets decent gas mileage. I’m coming up on 100,000 miles and I think the next truck I get will be the new 2021 Denali in a couple years when I get closer to 200k miles. Used or Rebuilt is the way to go. The cup holders are the stupidest thing in the truck though by far.

This review loses a lot of credibility when saying the "shelf" is for holding your phone. Definitely not what that is for and definitely not gonna hold your phone if you hit any decent bump, pot hole, dirt road, etc. The wheels are just a money grabber for GM, drop those and this becomes a very reasonably priced truck for all the features it has.

I think you are focusing too much on the price difference. All these trucks are expensive, but not outrageous. You missed where you put the phone, there is a flat wireless charger right in front of the armrest for the phone. The camera lingered on it like, what is this for? I do wish GM would differentiate these trucks more. The ZR2 is different from most, but Colorado, vs. Canyon seems to fall into the old GM habit of minor cosmetic differences.

Who's the truck for? It's for people like me who don't need a full sized truck because I don't need it for towing or carrying large loads. Interesting take, I am watching this because I am considering getting this truck. I am none of the things you are describing. I drive a BMW and have a 12 year old son. I am considering getting this truck now to give to him in 4 years instead of the BMW and when he starts driving I get the 911 and still have a truck to use when needed.

I'm looking to get a 2021. I didn't care for this one because it only has black interior, I would get the SLT, but you basically need to custom order them if you want the brown interior. 2021 SLT is gone and Denali offers brown interior and doesn't have the ugly grill this one has. Why do I want it? I basically want either a loaded SLE elevation or a Denali. But the SLE has ugly seats and once loaded the price difference is less than 5k, more like 3k and you get a lot of little extras. Also when shopping for a loaded sle it is very hard to figure out if it has all the options, like posi-trac rear axle, or the bed lights without looking at it. With Denali I know it has it. Same goes when you sell it, the extras on an SLE don't add to the value because people just look at the lowest price available and think you are over pricing it. People don't pay for options on the used market unfortunatly. Also, I don't want a full size truck. I don't like the size. But I'm old enough to remember when every high school kid had an S10 or Ranger. I'm older and more accomplished and make good money so I want the Denali to show I choose to have a mid-size, its not because I'm too poor to buy a full size. I want people to know I could have bought a full size for the same money. It's silly how people talk about size with trucks. Nobody says "You could have got an Avalon for almost the same money as a Camry."

Denali’s reliably have a higher resale value vs. their “loaded” counterparts. However I’m still not convinced it would be worth the extra money considering dealers would probably be more willing to heavily discount the “loaded” model.

I bought a 2001 Yukon Denali for my wife last year for $4700 with 110k. That has been one of the best automotive purchases I’ve made thus far. The canyon Denali will be a great deal when it’s worth $20k in a couple of years, if you can find one used. Let’s hope enough golf shop managers pull the trigger on them now, so that the some of us lowly golf shop employees can get the leftovers in a few years time.

Picked up a 2018 canyon Denali. Love the truck. I’m a fan of luxury trucks. I live about an hour from work and for the time I spend in the truck I want it to be as premium as possible without breaking the bank. For me to get another full sized truck with these options I’d be well beyond $50k. It was just a price I wasn’t willing to surpass. Plus the fuel economy isn’t that bad about 22-24 highway.

Yes, everyone and there dog up here has a Platinum F150 or a Longhorn Ram. You hit the nail on the head. Lots of riggers/drillers/oil guys with tons of money that spend more time in their trucks than they do at home. Want a nice environment. Nobody buys mid-size trucks up here due to their decreased practicality/payload/towing.
@TheSmokingTire5 жыл бұрын
I totally understand buying a full-size over a mid-size. I was more confused why you'd put luxurious materials in a vehicle that's designed to be used for utility purposes. I'm sure those trucks in AK see a lot of mud, inside and out. I'd be worried about ruining the leather. ZK

TheJacobShapiro yeah spend 40k-45k on a tacoma and it has the cheapest plastics known to man with cloth seats with no power adjustment and tech still falls behind the an SLT canyon, let alone a Denali. I purchased A loaded canyon shortly after I got my current job which is a pretty good job financially speaking. I did buy it lightly you so I didn’t pay full sticker price. But I could’ve bought a cheaper truck, however having some of the nicer features it’s just nice like heated and leather seats. And it is nice to be able to distinguish from a work truck to something I’m proud to own. I do like the size My truck has a crew cab with a 6 foot bed. But if I need to load something up I’ll just use my 14 foot trailer what’s the truck has no problem towing. In conclusion having a nicer truck is just nicer for every day commuting but you don’t lose the functionality of having work tool.

Denali vs regular trims: Part of it for me being forced to look at buying only the upper trims or top trims on American makes for the availability (or hoped for availability) of advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control with full stop & resume, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, etc. Toyota, Honda etc offer such features on most of their models without needing to buy the upper trims. Insurance rates for vehicles in early 2022-23 will likely have a discounted preference for vehicles with such features as they will be proven to prevent costly rear-enders etc. Vehicles without such features will likely be penalized more. I could otherwise care less about trying to exude upmanship on other hard-working people. I just want modern equipment and technologies, and increasingly that means buying those makes who offer advanced safety features that everyday people can afford, or spending more money on luxury trims, such as the Denali, from North American products.

The maybe this is who this is for. I'm one of those Oil & Gas guys who drives long distances on the highway to get to the offroad oilfield. I'm on my second F-150 Lariat which I love. The problem comes when I have meetings in the city and need to park in compact parking lots or parking garages. My decision will come down to how much am I giving up to get a compact truck. For people like me, these are work trucks, however the "work" could be driving a suit and tie client to lunch after an office meeting or it could be driving to a remote well location in steel toe boots using 4x4 with some equipment in the bed. Not convinced this is a better option. I think I'd rather deal with parking a largert truck over giving up the space and comfort of the f-150.

I owned a 2018 GMC Denali Diesel Long bed for 19 months and 58,000 miles. I drive over 3000 miles a month and it really was a good all-around package but the interior quality and some of the equipment was unfortunately low quality at the $46,000 I paid for that truck out the door. * I factory ordered the truck so I did pay all the money. Mechanical reliability was great I had no major issues whatsoever even with the diesel Powertrain. The fit and finish and especially interior quality was where this truck needs major Improvement. The driver's leather / vinyl failed within 14 months, the ventilated seats were an afterthought and didn't really work that well, seat adjustment and comfort were lacking. Lack of a sunroof option, no proximity key and LED/hid lights on a truck that stickers at $49,000 is just kind of silly at this point. Even the half ton Denali that stickers at almost $70,000 just doesn't live up to other manufacturers on interior quality. I traded in my truck for a used 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited and everything functionally inside that vehicle is better by a large margin.

Take away the Wheels and it a 43k truck, Tacoma limited with a couple options to match the GMC is 42k. Zac normally does a great job but 10Mins of research would have made this a better video. The truck is exactly what you expect the Denalized Canyon.

To me the guy that uses his truck hard buys a standard model or LT, XLT. The guy that uses it as a commuter and possibly to like tow a boat, or RV. And also occasionally goes deer hunting buys the Denali, platinum. I personally would buy a cloth seat low option truck, and put the additional money into the suspension/wheels/off road tires. And I must add I would not buy a general motors truck. After watching a lot of my friends and family here in the motor City get shit on recently by GM with the lay offs. Dedicated employees with 18 years in, getting escorted to their cars by rented security guards. I'm taking a step back from the brand for now.
@aGuyNamedEr1c5 жыл бұрын
I think you're on the right track as far as the demographic, but I think it goes deeper than just pay grade. The Canyon Denal is designed to have a more mature look and comfort oriented features . It says.. "I'm trying to comfortably get to the in-laws house for Christmas, not earn a sponsorship from Red Bull for the Baja 1000."
@SpecialKLSX5 жыл бұрын
Riddle me this, can you get a Base (or one trim level up)model ANY (not luxury brand) TRUCK with heated not leather seats, or a heates stearing wheel, there at the lot ready to drive off? That's why Denali's sale. Because the guy you are talking about doens't wanna wait 8 months for the truck in the spec he honestly wants. He wants it on that one day off he gets that month that he requested off so he can buy a truck. It's his work truck and itsw' gonna get ragged TF out. Thats why in the oil field towns you see these trucks 4 years odl and they look liek they went through hell. Because they did.
@Mr_Chris775 жыл бұрын
Besides the leather seats and chrome bits, I'm not exactly sure what more you get in this Denali vs a Colorado Z71. Sure doesn't look like it's worth THAT much more.

Had an All-Terrain model when they introduced the new Canyon a few years ago. 2WD...was priced right for what I got. Loved it for the most part, transmission not withstanding. But, a GT350 came calling and something had to go. Miss it some days. They are right-sized for around town and the odd home project or two. As for a Denali version of the Canyon? Way over-priced for what you get.

Zack - do a little prep man, the ZR2 includes the spool valve shocks/locking front and rear diffs/ 2 in lift/wider track/bigger wheels etc, and is generally just a different vehicle than this one, its not the standard Chevy to GMC derivative, the ZR2 is a baha truck-in-a-box that does not have an equivalent GMC model.
