Hi. As an old shop teacher, may I suggest a couple of easy improvements? 1) Don't glue down the top board; this way if you run your saw through it you can remove and replace it. Knowing that it's easily replaceable means you can use it as a sacrificial piece of wood. 2) Attach the top piece with brass screws; this way if you run your saw into a screw you don't damage your saw blade since brass is soft. Because brass is soft, after pre-drilling your pilot hole drive a steel screw the same size as your brass screws into the wood to cut the threads, then remove the steel screw and install the brass screws. 3) Instead of the 2x2 and dowel to lock the horse open, substitute a piece of 3/4" plywood with a notch cut into it that will latch onto the cross bar to secure the horse in the open position.

Scott, great suggetsion. Question: if you screw down a top board as you suggest, and it gets sacrificed/replaced multiple times wouldn't taking out / putting in screws over and over round out the trheads? Is there a way to attach with bolts or other means? Thanks!

Pivoting off this idea, here's an alternative that I've now implemented: 1. Glue a 2x4 and 2x6 flat together, with one of the edges flush. The 2x4 is the top and 2x6 the "base" of this setup. 2. Drill 1.5" deep holes into the top (2x4) centered on the 2x6 at ~4 locations. 3. Screw the 2x4 / 2x6 piece to the sawhorse base through the holes in #2. 4. Drill a few holes most of the way through the 2x4 / 2x6 from the top. Glue dowels into these. This ensures a very strong connection between these two top boards. I've now made 2 sawhorses like this. It's really nice to have the "shelf" on the 2x6 where I can clamp something to both the 2x4 and 2x6 in different directions. No issues after several projects with these, and they seem like they'll last several years before I need to replace the top 2 pieces.

@@philippeb4972 You could use screw inserts and bolts if you want to go to the trouble, but I don't think there's a rule that says you need to use the same holes. Even if you do and they become stripped, drill out the holes to accommodate a dowel, glue it in and re-drill for screws. Also remember this is a saw horse, not an heirloom tool. :-)

The first half of the kzbin.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

I have saw horses and seldom use them because they can be a hazard. Working on the ground, when it's practical, is much safer. Like you I use a piece of foam insulation to lift my boards when I need to make a cut. Thanks for the video which caters to those who don't get the downsides of using saw horses or aren't nimble enough to work on the ground. It's an absurdity people have commented on you supposedly never heard of using saw horses. It's a personal preference.

It's my first wood project and being a female attempting this with only youtube as my teacher and the Holy Spirit as my strength, I'd say I'm doing pretty well right now. I am about 1/2 way done and I am really excited to see it completed. Thank you for this video.

The weak point is definitely the hinges. Those screws are what is holding it all up. So these can’t hold the weight that a bigger more robust set can hold but these are great small project horses. Fun project for kids.

The hinges aren't holding weight. They are only there to help the legs fold. The load is transfered from the top plate into the top ends of the legs.

Remodel carpenter here. I like the all metal fold up ones for $19 at Menards that you can screw a sacrificial 2x4 to the top. That way if I make a quick cut and don't adjust my saw depth, no big deal nicking the 2x4. And when they get too chewed up, I just replace them.

First off- I love your hair color!!! My wife has highlights in her hair....but her secret is that she started going grey early in her 30's, and she's a redhead- so she just does a conservative amount of pink highlights. She gets a lot of compliments from random people-the funny part is how old ladies walk up to her and want to touch her hair....it's kinda strange, haha. Anyway great video, I feel inspired now- last week I was cutting down a 4x8 sheet of plywood in my garage....and well, my plastic saw horse got in the cut path of my circular saw. I got showered with chunks of plastic (good reason to wear safety glasses) and did a number on the sawhorse....thankfully it's still useable, but i need to build some ones that can take the abuse, haha. Cheers!

Completely different scenario but when I was in college studying mechanics, my tutor told me about an old colleague of his that accidentally shorted out a car battery with his wedding ring, then when he pulled his hand away it basically de-gloved his ring finger leaving just bone because the ring got so hot! Not sure how true the story was but this reminded me of it, rings can really get in the way! 🤣

I like it. I have not read all the comments. My thought is to use a bolt with the head cut off. Instead of the dowel. This would negate the possibility of the dowel breaking over time. I am going to make a set because I too, have a busted plastic set...🤣😂😅

I started with this design but scrapped it after seeing the non-mortise, to me, it adds complication where none should exist. In the end it was a good starter sawhorse but I upgraded and simplified the design which kept costs lower and still created a horse that could support about of ton of weight each.

I’ve built many types and pairs on ponies, over the years. At 5:51, think of the same concept, without the top 2x6 and add another 2x4 beside the other top 2x4. Now....take that picture and apply it to 1 x 4’s, in leu of 2 x 4’s. Good 1x’s without knots. Make sure, the top of the horizontal 1x4 is about 1/2”-3/4” above the top of the vertical 1 x 4’s. Dado the verticals, at all joints 1/8”-1/4” deep. You want to have the horizontal members on the outside, in leu of the inside. Use your hinges at the verticals. Since your top horizontals were slightly higher than your verticals, the hinges will be below the top of the pony. Now, take some 1/4” ski rope and drill holes, fairly low, on the verticals. Thread the rope through the holes. Add a washer and tie a knot. Heat the knot, slightly, to keep it from loosening. Make sure the bottom spread of the legs, is no more than 16”. Personally, I prefer 12”-14”. 1x’s are stronger, closer to vertical. Lastly, take some carpet remnants. Fold the bottom edge under. Flush that with the bottom edge of the top horizontal member. Screw through both layers, into the horizontal member. Make sure the pony is closed, then repeat on the other side. I never saw through the carpet. Therefore, I never cut into the wood on my ponies. I have had, as many as 15 sheets of 3/4” plywood on these ponies, without any problems. They are very light. The only problem that I have ever had is: because of the narrow footprint and the weight, if there is no load on the ponies and it is a windy day, they may blow over. I am a 3rd generation of carpenters and these are my favorite homemade ponies. Otherwise, all the ponies that I build, are always made with 1x’s.

Build tracks for circular saws using circular saw and factory edge of plywood. I'm about to build some custom shelving and I will break down my plywood by clamping one sheet over the other and riding my circular saw against the plywood edge. This is extremely accurate unless there is an alignment issue between the saw's blade and base plate.

1st project I did when I started my home shop was to build sawhorses. Can't do much framing without them. These look heavy compared to other designs I've used. As I've aged, weight and dual use became important. Now my favorite pair of horses are my 32 gallon plastic trash cans. Flip one over for chop saw or a small table top. Leave one upright to hold the scrap pieces you'd need to pick up later. When paired upright they also support both sides of the cut so the cutoff piece doesn't need to be held. Also useful between projects for their stated utility.

Good tutorial and thanks for the plans, but I do want to point out that 2x4s aren’t actually 4 inches wide, so youre either using lumber you ripped yourself or you’re using 3 1/2” hinges at most. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to attach the wider portion to the legs like you do in this video. I’m hoping that the orientation doesn’t actually matter for structural support because I already bought all of the 4” hinges and am gonna try attaching legs to the smaller section of the hinges.

Did you end up building this? I was looking at buying materials for it today, but noticed a couple of potential issues. If you did build some, did screwing the hinges opposite each other on the 2” runner, cause any issues with the screws running into each other? Also, did the barrel of the hinge interfere with attaching the top plate? To me it looks like they’d create a void between the runner and the top plate.

I bet these could easily hold the weight of a car. I added a few little bits (Tee plate), bigger support beam and chain to hold the legs together. I think tomorrow I will do the exact copy from your plans. Big thanks for your encouragement!

This was just a cut and paste, so some parts may not be applicable to you. Just hoping someone actually replies.

@@charlesascott661 good morning Charles, Yes I did build these and my second and third sets were built for my Son in Law my Son went better and look more like the plans show. I had no trouble with the screws running into one another. The barrel of the hinge on both sides had to be adjusted so that it did not interfere with the top plate. Your concern is correct and you need to adjust for that. A friend made a set and used a piece of plywood to be the hinge that held them in place when extended and became a shelf that would be useful. I really like these saw horses and use them frequently even if my first set doesn't look as pretty as it should. They are still bull strong.

@@lui1648 thanks, much appreciated. I ended up buying everything and after actually getting my hands on the hinges, I figure I’ll just attach the opposite sides of the hinges to each side of the runner. I hadn’t clicked onto the fact that being a non-mortise hinge, the holes on the two sides don’t line up like standard hinges.

I have a pair of home made saw horses, but I like this design better. One addition I would suggest. Add a tray that screws into the top of the locking arms so that when you flip them down, you have a shelf you can drop bits your using to keep them out of the way. A thin piece of Ply will do and the arms should take it without any problems

i think the only thing i'd change is...instead of using a wood dowel for the pin, i'd use a metal rod. you can use a small amount epoxy to hold it in. that way, much lower chance it'll break. other than that, cool design.
@lajohnson1ly
@lajohnson1ly 4 жыл бұрын
Probably means having to cut a section of rod to proper length, which means carrying a hacksaw, and a file to smooth the cut edge, thus doubling the needed tools. Use a hardwood dowel.

Same. I Would even use a lag bolt and then cut the head of the bolt off with a grinder and smooth it over. going to be much sturdier.

When I saw this video title presented by courtesy of Google Algorithm, I thought not another sawhorse video but the aspect of "Heavy Duty Folding" piqued my curiosity. I must say this is perhaps one of the best folding sawhorses that are truly HD grade. I was trying to decide between 5 others on the YT, but I think I am going make these and especially with your generous "free plans" is an offer I can't refuse; lol Rama

@@charlesascott661 Yes I made them over a year ago and turned out well. As I did not remember what you are asking, I looked at it again and think I know what is your concern. Yes, you do run into the issue of the screws from the two hinges on the opposite sides can interfering. I must have run into this as well but I used only a 3/4"long but #10 wood screws. These are shorter but thicker screws that don't run into each other. They have held up very well as the resting force is mostly on the pivot of the hinge and the bevel of the legs supporting the runner. Alternatively, you could offset the hinges from either side slightly and they should work fine as the folding action only requires that they are in line on their own side of the runner. Hope this is clear and helps

I will put sacrifical 2x4s on mine with dados in them so you can connect the sawhorses with long 1x2s to create a table for cutting large sheets with a track saw. Ideal if you cant cut them with your table saw or cant transport the large sheets into your workshop. If your 2x4s and 1x2s are all beat up from sawing halfway throuh them, you can replace them and your sawhorses are undamaged

Very clean design and simple build. I like! The only thing I might do different is adding a removable waste wood top rail. Maybe with inset carriage bolts? That way I can cut through the top (up to the depth of the bold heads) without fear or ruining the saw or sawhorse. When they get too cut up, I’ll remove the carriage bolts and put on a new top. Thanks for this great build! Fun fact: the Spanish word for saw horse is burro!

Nice job. Very space friendly. If you plan to 'use-n-abuse' these sawhorses like I am prone to do, don't glue the tops before screwing them on. This makes them sacrificial and replaceable. Another trick is to countersink those screws 3/4" deep, so a circular saw blade would be less likely to hit them.
The PERFECT folding sawhorse and how to EASILY build one!
