PNW - Day 6 - We Compare Lake Views to Mountaintops at Thunder Knob in the North Cascades

My favorite day of the trip. We got coffee and headed to North Cascades National Park. Snow had made some of the higher elevation hikes difficult, so we stayed and did little trails. Then we tackled Thunder Knob, which had an awesome river crossing, a cool mossy area, and a summit that made us feel surrounded by snow-capped peaks! What a day!

I was born and raised in Ft. Wayne and am a 2 time IU grad. I moved to Washington in 1979, where I met my wife, a migrant from Illinois. Moving West was a choice we never have regretted. Our life in Washington has been great, filled with wonderful experiences amid the incredible beauty the state has in abundance. Glad you were able to enjoy a small sample. Having spent over 30 years hiking and backpacking in the North Cascades, I can tell you that what you saw is only a small taste of their exquisitely rugged scenic grandeur. I hope you have the opportunity to come back when the kids are a bit older, to push a bit higher and deeper into the backcountry. It's a rich and rewarding experience that amply repays the sweat and exertion. In the meantime, enjoy continued happy travels with your family. The kids will be grown and gone before you know it, so treasure your time with them, as you seem to be doing quite well.

It definitely doesn’t. Some of the best views I’ve ever had while hiking. I’d go back to North Cascades in a minute!
