In this chapter of our series on the Teenage Engineering PO-33 KO!, we take a look at one of the more interesting features of the KO, the ability to data transfer to and from the unit. The KO has a feature where connecting a stereo 1/8" to 1/8" cable between the unit and an audio recorder allows you to download all of the samples and patterns in the unit. This allows you to swap samples and patterns without loosing your work. You then have a back up of your work. You can also transfer files directly between two KOs. Note: this also applies to the other Pocket Operators in the Metal Series, the PO-32 and PO-35.

Here is a direct link to the WAV file:
drive.google.c...
It is super important to get the right audio format when you record the data transfer. It must be a stereo 16 bit 44100 hz file format or better. The recording will likely fail if you deviant from this format.

Its VERY particular about how the data transfer is recorded. If theres any compression, conversion, etc it won't work. Make sure its stereo and record/playback in WAV is possible. Don't convert it or compress it, that also means don't normalize it.

Great video. Very helpful. Thanks so much for making this! The little K.O. is mind blowing. Hey man, is that some type of special clamp for POs you got spinning around? Retro Tech History: You know... this method of audio data transfer actually gave me a bit of a chuckle, as it's nearly exactly the same method that was used almost 40 years ago >> to backup and restore programs in early inexpensive personal computers - such as the Commodore VIC-20 (which I actually had). The good olde VIC had a cassette tape drive, and you saved and loaded all your programs and data from it. It was very slow, but it sounds exactly like the data in the K.O. recordings...
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The clamp isn't anything special, just a small clamp. Its on a rotating base. I think there are a few applications where tape drive backups are still in use. It was pretty creative of TE to use it on the KO. Enjoy your KO!

Thanks for this! I was trying to do a data transfer through my audio interface into my DAW earlier this morning and just got a crazy static sound so I stopped it and went looking for answers. I was expecting that it would just output the actual sounds, but after checking out the wav file you put up in dropbox...nope, it is supposed to be crazy static! Definitely trying this again later this evening.
@OllieLoops

Hey, I believe the data transfer is technically a digital audio format, which is why it sounds like static. I think that's the only way they would be able to transfer pattern info and other data. Anyway, it sounds like your doing it right (no pun intended). Let me know how that goes.

hi, I'm having lots of trouble getting this to work... i notice you suggest playing the recorded audio BEFORE activating the PO to receive - won't this result in it missing the beginning of the backup? I've tried both ways anyway and still no luck :( I'm recording the data into garage band using an audio interface (UMC22) and an insert cable, playing back with a 1/8" audio cable with 1/4" adapter for the interface's headphone out... any idea what's going wrong???
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
The sequence of recording data in should be, Press Record on the recorder, Start transmission of the KO data backup. Then receiving into the KO, start data receiving on the KO, then press Play on the recorder to play back. Using this method, there should be a moment of silence at the beginning of the recording as a buffer and not missing the beginning of the data transmission. Regarding why it's not working correctly, theres some things to troubleshoot. First, make sure your cable is stereo. It should work via headphone out to the KO, but how did you record in? You would need a 1/8" trs to (2) 1/4" mono cable to go into the inputs of the interface, for example. The signal needs to be stereo. You can also verify the signal is in stereo within Garage band. I hope that helps.
@cjw4381

So you mentioned I can use a phone to transfer data... Would it 1/8 inch stereo to 1/8 inch into the headphone jack? Or is it an adapter that plugs into my USB C port. Also do I use just a standard voice recording app to capture?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, depending on your phone type, you would likely need an audio interface into the phone. I know there are several options for iOS devices such as the iRig products. You should then be able to record into the Voice Memo app, or Garage Band, etc with a stereo 1/8" to 1/8" cable. Then go from the interface or direct off the phone with a 1/8" to 1/8" stereo cable to transmit back into the KO. Hope that helps!

Quick question! From your data, listening to pattern 4 sounds amazin. The sounds are super crisp. I believe they are from "sound" 3. When I listen to the sounds in sound 3 on their own however, the have an audible crackling/hiss in the background. The same happens when I add them to the pattern you made. So when I add the (supposedly same) sounds, the one that you put there will sound perfect and the ones I add sound terrible. Any idea whats happening here? //edit: I just found your (incredible) sample setup video. It seems filters are not transferred when transferring data! (?) So anyone else wondering this: You probably have to (re-) set up the filters for the sample sets. Your videos on this little machine are incredible.

Thank you for this comment. I was hoping to just clone someone's drum section so I could just sample my own melodic section and have a cookie cutter drum section. I actually wish the KO was designed this way and had only the first 8 slots re-writeable. OR just 16 melodic sample slots and then just expect the user to buy a different PO for drums.

For the line input, yes it should play through the speaker. Unless you are trying to do a data overwrite on your KO, in which case double check your button press sequence to make sure you’re in data mode. If you’re trying to backup your KO, you should be connecting to the audio output. Hope that helped.

Hi, I've tried several times this with a Edirol recorder (16 bits 44.1Khz) getting unconsistent results. Question: the volume of the PO-33 when recording the backup is important? What's the recommended volume in the recorder? About -6dB? It also looks like when I want to load a backup into the PO-33, if I just made a reset in the unit, it won't load up. But If I don't do it, sometimes it works out fine. Any idea why this erratic behaviour? Thanks!
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Oriol, thanks for your comment. The backup process can be tricky sometimes. I would say that the volume of both devices is important. In general, you just don't want it to be too loud and clipping or too quite. On the KO, I typically set the output volume to 12. The recorder should be ok at -6db, but you could probably drop it down between -6 and -12 to be safe. You want to make sure its not clipping or distorting during the recording. If your recorder has a level meter, you can verify with that that the signal is at a good level and not too low or too high. The data transfer can take a few minutes, so make sure you stop the recording a few seconds after the KO's screen says "end". Assuming the recording of the data transfer is now fine, next we need to make sure the KO accepts the data transfer from the recorder. First, if your recorder has a line level output, use that to connect directly to the KO's line level input. If the recorder doesn't have a line level output, connect to the headphone out and set the headphone level to about 75% or so. Now start the KO data receive process and then start playback on the recorder. Hopefully it will accept the data transfer. Good luck and let me know how that goes.

Thanks for the tutorial! I have a question though, would it work if I use an aux cable to connect to my laptop and use Audacity to record the signal? There is another tutorial video that suggested I should use an audio interface and a 1/8 split to two 1/4 to record the signal in stereo. Is it possible with just an aux cable? I don't wanna risk losing my first decent beat :P
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment and question. Using a cable from the KO to an audio recorder or to a computer via an audio interface is the same concept. You would likely need an 1/8" to (2) 1/4" cable because you need to maintain a stereo signal, assuming your interface has (2) 1/4" mono inputs. Using Audacity, or similar audio recording app will work fine, just make sure you are recording in stereo. Going from the interface to the KO is similar, but you can also use a stereo 1/8" to 1/8" stereo cable from the headphone out of the interface into the KO. Hope that helps!

Does your laptop have a line input? That’s not very common. Confirm the specs on your computer. If it does, then check the input settings in Audition. It should be set to the line input, not the mic. Hey, thanks for your comment. Some older Mac Book Pros had line level inputs, but they stopped including those inputs about 10 years ago. Unless you have one of those laptops, you will likely need an interface of some sort to accept a line level input. Once you have a interface, you can record it into Logic and any other app that can record audio. Just make sure not to convert or compress the audio file. Otherwise, the KO won't accept the data transfer. I hope that helps!

EFGUY hey, there are several interfaces out there that could work. You need one with at least two inputs. I would recommend checking out the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. It’s currently on it’s 3rd gen. Once you get above the $200 range, many companies have offerings worth looking at. SSL just came out with a promising interface. Motu has decent stuff. NI has a basic interface at that price. Been chewing this over during the interminable 24hr wait for my 33 to arrive... Could I simply run it out via a stereo 1/8” cable, through an interface, into AUM on the iPad? That would automatically record into Audioshare and allow a simple upload into Cubasis. Sounds too good to be true. Is it?
@OllieLoops

Thanks for your comment. That seems like a viable solution. You should be able to record into and play back from an iPad. Just remember not to compress the recording in the process. In other words, converting the recording into an MP3 will likely cause the KO not to accept the data transfer. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out.

I also tried a 1.8” jack to twin RCA but also couldn’t get any sound through my monitors. I’m using a Komplete audio 6 interface if you have any help ❤️
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
@James Twigg Hey James, I can try to help. Is the goal to just get audio out of the KO and play over your monitors via the interface? Or are you trying to record a data transfer? I'm guessing you may just want the audio to play over your monitors. There are a few ways to do this. Going from the 1/8" output on the KO, direct to the monitor's inputs is the simplest way to go. You could go into a mixer as well, to adjust the volume levels before the monitors. You could also go into your interface from the KO. I haven't worked with the Komplete interface before, but I would assume its like most interfaces. In this case, you would likely need to open a DAW of some sort and arm the inputs on the interface and turn on monitoring on the inputs as well. This will allow the audio to pass through the audio interface to the outputs. Likely, you will need to have the DAW open and configured this way whenever you want to go from the KO to the interface and out to the monitors. Lastly, this way of connecting the KO introduces several gain stages, so its important to go from the source to the destination, adjusting the volume in that order. Make sure that the audio output level on the KO is set between 12-16 after you connect your 1/8" cable. The KO defaults to a low volume, so you just have to turn it up a bit. Once the KO's volume is set to a good level, slowly turn up the input gain on your interface until its just below peaking/clipping. Then adjust the main volume output to the monitors. I hope that helps!

Hey I'm new to this. I don't have a sampler to transfer my data to, either computer (which doesn't seem to have the capability as my computer [sound card] is old) or my Google Pixel 3, which when trying to use a male to male from KO mic input to my headphone jack on phone did nothing. Please help. What can I do that won't require me to buy anything extra in order to transfer (save) my work in progress? Thank you in advance and thanks for the vid!
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. I’ll try to help. I’m not certain you can record the KO on your Pixel 3 given what you mentioned. But here’s what I would try. Connect the cable from the KO’s headphone output to the jack on the phone. Open the recorder app on the phone. Play some notes on the KO to test the input on the phone. If you get a signal coming into the phone, you should be able to do a data transfer from the KO. You would then follow the instruction in this video to create a data transfer. If you get no signal coming into the phone from the KO, then you will need either a USB interface for your computer or phone to record the KO, or you would need an audio recorder with an input. I hope that helps.

@@OllieLoops Thank you for your response. I tried a number of voice recording apps on my phone and there is no signal. It keeps using my phone mic. I will have to get a USB interface and try that. In the meantime, I'm using Audacity. It's allowing me to edit and record as I need. Thank you.

$32 Solution: I grabbed a cheap voice recorder w/line-in. The famous Toobom R39 that all the kids are raving about /s. Using the line-in with wav, max bitrate, no compression, etc it works fine. It's pretty tiny too, like a large lighter. Maybe someone can find one even cheaper, but I thought I'd share that it worked. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G718KXC/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Maybe I should've sprung for the $50 sony but this works.

@Ollie Loops what about if I only have a MacBook, how do I transfer the data?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Juan. Thanks for your question. Older MacBook Pros had line level inputs, but not the new ones. Assuming you have a new one, you will likely need a simple audio interface to accept the audio signal from the KO. Then use GarageBand or any DAW to record the signal from the KO. I hope that helps!
@juangsantos

@@OllieLoops This is very helpful. I'm about to pick one of these up, and I wanted to make sure I had everything I need. Just to recap, I would connect a 1/8" audio line from the Pocket E. to the MacBook and use GarageBand (for example) to bring in the data"? And yup I have one of those Macbooks with the touch bar.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Since you have one of the newer MBPs, you’ll also need an audio interface. I recommend a Focusrite Scarelett. Then you will need a stereo 1/8” to two mono 1/4” cable to connect the PO to the interface. The interface is USB bus powered, so you just need to connect a USB cable from the interface to the computer. Then in GarageBand, select the interface as your audio input and you’re ready to record. I hope that helps!

@OllieLoops

Performing a factory reset should bring back all the factory sounds. Check out the user guide for your particular PO on TE’s website for instructions on performing a factory reset.

@@OllieLoops I thought so to, but it resets settings and the patterns, but not the sounds. So you get "original" patterns with you own recorded sounds. 😐 It's the po-137 (speak - Rick and Morty) I have, so I'm hoping that I use my laptop import the original sounds.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Mads Hannil Hedensted interesting. The Rick and Morty version has a different set of sounds than the original speak, I recall. Ok, if you do a test, record something into it, and do a factory reset, is the recording still there? If so, there may be something wrong with the device. If the recording is gone, then it’s working as expected. To do a factory reset, hold pattern and write while installing the batteries. Further, the speak has an accompanying VST to load sounds from a computer. You may look into that and see if that gets the sounds back. But you may need to purchase the VST. Lastly, if the recordings remain after you do a factory reset, I would recommend contacting TE support. They should be able to help you further. Good luck! Let use know if you get it resolved. Thanks.

Hello! Will the mixer Xenyx 802usb work? Where should I plug it in there?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, you’ll want an 1/8” stereo trs to (2) mono 1/4” Ts cable. Plug the 1/8” side into the output of the KO. Plug the 1/4” ends into the line input of two of the channels on the mixer. Pan one channel left, pan the other channel right. Adjust the volume on the KO to about 75%. You’ll need to do this each time you power up the KO. Adjust the gaining each channel on the mixer so you have a good input signal without clipping. Both channels should have similar gain levels. Now use the faders for the channels to adjust volume for the KO. I hope that helps.

Hey, using a dedicated recorder simplifies the process, but you can use an interface and go into a DAW also. The same principles apply: use a stereo cable, make sure the input is set to line level, adjust gain for good signal strength without clipping. Don’t use any compression, limiters or eq. Record in and play it back exactly as it was recorded. Again with a stereo cable back into the PO. Good luck!
