This video explores the possibilities of the Teenage Engineering PO-33 K.O.! micro sampler when used in conjunction with various guitar pedals. Specially, what happens when you use a TC Electronics Ditto Looper pedal with to KO? And what happens when you add a studio quality compressor like the Keeley Compressor pro along with a high end eq like the JHS Colour Box? Well, on this snow day episode we show you how its done. Find out if this is the lo fi, bit crushing travel beat making setup of your dreams.

The most powerful of all these is the looper. I saw you do a couple of things that can be done on the ko itself with the color pedal, but the looper adds more voices in a way this little thing really needs
@OllieLoops

Hey Navraj, thanks for your comment. I agree that the looper adds the most value to this set up. The Colour Box adds much more tone sculpting possibilities than the KO, but it is not critical to this set up, its just more convenient and flexible than the KOs EQ features.

@@rajgill7576 Hopefully your KO arrives soon! To clarify, the filter on the KO can only engage a high pass or low pass filer at a time per sound, and not both. But an EQ pedal, like the Colour Box allows you to apply both, boost and cut, etc all at once. It's far more powerful than what the KO allows you to do. And again, its not needed, its just nice to have. Have fun with your buddy's pedalboard. Let me know how that goes.

@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Congrats on getting the ko and the ditto looper x4! You will need an 1/8” male to 1/4” male cable. The x4 has a stereo input, so you can use a stereo cable, but mono would work as well. There is no midi out of the ko, so there is no sync beyond just audio. In my video, I’m just using the ko as a sampler/drum pad and the looper pedal is used to record and loop audio from the ko. I hope that helps! Have fun.
@mairinger80
@mairinger80 4 жыл бұрын
I sync the PO and x4 via an OP-1, works fine. Anything that output a click signal and midi at the same time will work, you could also run midi and a clicktrack from a daw to both devices.

Would there be any way of applying effects and recording them back on the PO? For example adding delay with a pedal to a melodic sample chop and getting the wet signal back on the PO to continue playing on it with the sequencer
@OllieLoops

You would need a third device to do it. A simple audio recorder could work. Record the processed KO signal into a recorder. Then play it back and sample that into the KO. I hope that helps.

Nice.. Does the compressor accept aux in? Otherwise I might be wrong, but cant help thinking you'll get a better sound by sonwhow impedance matching "KO Stereo (line) Out" to "compressor (instrument) In, for the best input quality (not lose some KO sound). You did the reverse with the Amp to hear and record the result
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey James, great comment and observation. This compressor is studio quality and has an input range between -50db and +10db. Instrument level can be as low as -25db. Line level can vary between -4db and +10db. So the compressor can handle the ko’s input just fine. If I really wanted the best sound quality possible, I could add a reamp converter from line to instrument levels between the ko and compressor. But this compression is made to handle stuff like this. Hope that helps!

@@OllieLoops thanks for reply yeah exactly cheers. Getting my head around mic instrument and line levels because I want to add a "line level chord sequence" from Cubase to Digitech Trio (guitar sequence creating pedal). Creates drum and bass tracks but replication is dependant on v precise chord sequence Was thinking Reamp unit which has an 'interesting' thread by manufacturer probably the correct way - or mini mixer with some kind of send as a work around , I think the key is to not enter pedal too little or too hot. I never post in ytube but I've worked out a lot of things not already online - might start doing this when I work this out. You and your channel inspired me - Respect

@@seven7sseven7s83 Hey James, I think I follow what you are trying to do. A reamp would be the right want to go as you would need to get from line level, out of your computer, to instrument level, into your Trio Pedal. I recommend Radial Engineering's devices. Its a good investment if you plan to process audio from your DAW through pedals and similar outboard gear. Hope that helps!

can you use any guitar pedal and compressor with the po 33?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 3 жыл бұрын
The short answer is that you can experiment and it won’t hurt to use guitar pedals. Technically speaking, you want to use studio grade pedals/devices because they are designed to work up to line level audio signals versus guitar pedals that are only meant to work with instrument level audio signals.

Should I put a case on mine. I order one in the mail. Wondering if others don't use them because of sensitivity?
@OllieLoops

I didn’t put a case on mine mostly because I didn’t want to break the loop off of the top. I’m not sure you loose sensitivity with a case because the buttons aren’t touch sensitive. But maybe other users can give their opinion.

Wouldn't one typically want the EQ ahead of the compressor? Not absolutely necessary but that would be closer to a standard mastering chain.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment. That's a good point, you may typically want to EQ prior to compression. In an optimum setup, I like to EQ before and after compression. However, on bass, I sometimes like to flatten and fatten the sound with a compressor first and then use EQ to cut unwanted frequencies.

Nope, no computer was used in this video. Just plug the KO directly into the guitar pedals. You will need a way to hear the output from the pedals. Plug it into a speaker or get a headphone amp, like I'm doing in this video. peace.

That color box added some buzz interference. Idk if that is the best option. I like the idea of tuning the frequency’s for each sound. I could see this useful in a DAW but I think you may need a better mobile setup maybe get a cheap used multi effect processor with eq functions. Then you can have less pedals (less power outlets or batteries) for a live setup.
